Oh, and my major reason for posting.....Lexington Parks & Rec has a policy on geocaches that I just found out applies to letterboxes also. If you are planning to plant, you have to get permission with an approval number or it will be removed and pitched if they find it.

Here is the procedure:
Requesting approval:

Send an email to cdowns@lfucg.com with "Letterbox Request" in the Subject Line.

Please include the following information in the Body of the email:

1. Name, address and phone number of the owner.
2. Include the name the letterbox will have.
3. Posted clues plus the exact description to finding the LB.
4. Name of the park where letterbox is to be hidden.
5. Include a description of the container (Tupperware, ammo box, and film canister).
6. If you include a parking suggestion include this in the request.
7. Include if the letterbox is existing (hidden prior to May 1, 2003 only) or new cache.
8. Include 1-2 sentences describing where the letterbox is hidden.

Do not include pictures, diagrams, figures etc. Requests that are submitted incomplete will be returned. Once approval has been granted, you will be given an approval number. Include this number at the bottom of your letterbox description when you post the clues.

The LFUCG Parks and Recreation cannot assume any liability for any letterbox placement. Letterboxers place boxes in Parks property at their own risk. This includes damage, destruction, and loss occurring to any LB placement.

Moving letterboxes:

If a letterbox needs to be moved due to environmental impact, non-letterboxers finding it, etc. please resubmit the new clues and a new description of where the letterbox has been re-hidden.

Their posted rules (they are written for geocaches but also apply to LBs):

The following is the policy for hiding caches in Lexington and Fayette County parks.

1. Groups/individuals must stay on trails at Raven Run and McConnell Springs where hiking off trail can cause ecological damage.

2. Groups/individuals must obey operating hours and park rules and must park in designated parking areas only.

3. The owner of the cache should provide an email of request to the Recreation Supervisor/Naturalist listed.

4. Current cache owners who already have caches in Lexington parks should send an email in the same manner as a new cache.

5. LFUCG will respond to the request and will issue an approval number. Once this has been received the cache owner may seek approval from geocaching.com

6. Park staff will remove all caches hidden without approval.

7. As per standard GeoCaching rules, no burying of caches is allowed anywhere in the LFUCG Park system.

8. Physical caches are not allowed in the following areas:
· Phoenix Park.
· Thoroughbred Park.
· Gratz Park.
· Riding Areas at Masterson (including cross-country courses, jump areas, dressage and lesson rings, paddock areas, and indoor arenas).
· Camp Kearney during the summer.
· Golf courses.
· Pool areas.
· Community Center grassy areas.
· Model Airplane Facility at Haley Pike.
· Anywhere there are gates locked/fences to keep visitors out.
· On the surface of any playing fields.

Note: Triangle Park is not LFUCG property so permission would have to come from Lexington Center Corp.

Well, there ya have it. BTW--the guy was very nice and I'm quite sure that no boxes will be "unapproved."

With Peace,

The Lexington Plant Some Boxes on Cinqo o'Mayo is this weekend. Are you guys ready? Considering the parks rules and regs, there are other places to consider, even some of the outlying towns. We're hoping to put some boxes down for people traveling the 75 route, locals, or the merely curious:

Just letting everyone know....Thoroughbred Park is on the list of DO NOT PLANT in these parks......

You might refer to my post #84935 for "rules" for planting in parks here in Lexington.

Also, just to let you know, it's a very easy procedure for planting in parks.....after you plant, you send the man an e-mail and he responds back very warmly........not a problem!

Looking forward to seeing everyone!! (My dd is getting her few cooties ready....LOL)

With Peace,

Thanks for that reminder! Undoubtedly, Parks doesn't want anything to happen to those beautiful statues. In that case, take Thoroughbred Park off the list.

Ok, I just drove from Florida and have moved in. I'm still living out of boxes and I doubt I will have time to get together any boxes to plant....I also have no idea where to plant any yet due to the fact that this is my first time being in KY. See everyone Saturday!

It was so great that you came to the event so soon after moving! It was a good size of event so that no one was overwhelmed with meeting too many people at once. Next event, I will know several people and it will be more relaxed and give me more time for some tomfoolery (fear the cootie!). Hope to see everyone again!
