I-40 to Albuquerque

Hello,

Just a quick question: What are the good drive-bys on I-40 West in New Mexico?

Will be driving through quickly, and I'm looking for good spots to stop.

Most of my companions will be tolerating this, so short is good.

Thanks,
FamilyMan

I started Letterboxing in January 2007. I can't wait for Letterboxing to catch-on in New Mexico! We have so many cool places to plant boxes.

I hope you all plant more boxes near Las Cruces! I can't believe this is a college town and nobody does Letterboxing. I think I need to get more retirees involved! LOL

And here I thought it HAD caught on! When I placed my first box there in 2001, I think there were about four letterboxes in the rest of the state. With none for me to look for, I left a box behind, trip after trip. Then, magically, in 2006 Lionsmane and Astro D and Rubberpeace appeared. The rest is history... Now there are too many boxes for the amount of time I have when I'm there. I'll never find them all. Funhog

I was lucky enough to find one box in Albuquerque when we went for a brief trip on May 18th. Unfortunately it's 3.5 hours to Albuquerque and longer to Sante Fe from Las Cruces. ;-) I'm glad things have picked up since your started! I know there are a few boxes in El Paso. I'll have to find them next...

I was checking Washington (my home state) and Oregon for a trip to see my sister and it looks like they have many boxes. Even small towns have three or four pages of boxes listed. I'll have to use the trip planner and be selective since I'll be driving to and from Portland. LOL
Another Letterbox in Las Cruces!

We planted another box near Las Cruces yesterday. It's in a beautiful spot in the Aguirre Spring Campground area on the Pine Tree Loop trail. It's called, "Pine Tree Loop - Lost Zuni Bear". The clues are very specific (with pictures) because I was worried nobody would be able to find it. It's not an easy hike but it's well worth the trip!

We have four boxes in the Las Cruces area now! Only three are listed on AtlasQuest but you can find the clues for the fourth one on letterboxing.org.

I wish we could come up to Sante Fe for the SPOOKtacular event! Have a great time everyone!

It's me again! I planted another box out at Soledad Canyon. It's actually planted on the Bar Canyon loop trail. My 70 yr old mother was with us (and it was cold!) so we only went about 1/2 mile before we planted it. I plan on going back another day and planting one further along the loop trail. What a beautiful place!

Traveling to Las Cruces? If any of you are traveling through this area think about planting a box while you're here. We have lots of beautiful places to explore and few boxes (but I'm working on it!). I recently got my neighbor and her four kids interested in Letterboxing. ;-)

I'm finishing some journals today so I can get inspired to carve some stamps. My next box placement will be on mountain bike!

Hi All,
This Connecticut Yankee is going to be in the Albuquerque area (wow, have to keep looking up the spelling on that LOL ) with a friend who is going to a conference for a few days. I will be at loose ends while she is at her meetings and was hoping I might meet up with someone to do some letterboxing. I will not have a car, but would be more than willing to pay for gas. We will be there February 28th throught March 4th. I think her meetings are on the weekend, but will have more information in a day or two. If anyone is interested I would be very greatful.
My husband Grumpy and my dog Mona aren't coming so I sure would like to be able to show them some stamps from the local talent. I've heard it's quite good.
Thanks in advance,
Hez

Hi from the Four Corners. I am a newbie to AQ and a short time letterboxer. We have a scout troop that has brought Farmington from 0 to 6 boxes since 2006. We have also planted in Roswell and Carlsbad. I go by the trail name Jose, some of our boxes are posted by another leader so not all are on AQ, but they all are on LBNA (see farmington or san juan county). I look forward to more Letterboxing adventures. - Jose

Thanks for your replies. I grew up in Santa Fe, so it will be fun to go back and see the City Different from the letterboxing point of view. Our troop has found some in Durango and appreciated the places we would have never been to had it not been for this exciting FREE hobby. Our other leader has planted a new box around La Plata, see The newest Red Dragon LbNA #: 43961. -Jose

Our scout troop recently planted a box in Roswell and it has already gone missing. I would love to get another one to replace it, there are NO other boxes (that I know of) in Roswell. I'll carve if I could get someone to plant. - Jose

FYI, there are other boxes in Roswell... but don't let that stop you from wanting to replant! :)

(I hope to find more next time I am able to get out that way! :)

After being told of the quality and quantity of wonderful petroglyphs in this tucked away canyon, I caved a stamp and had to go see for myself. WOW! it was worth the bumpy road to get there. You won't be disappointed but should be ready for a little adventure when finding this box. LBA#45800. - Jose

Hey you guys!! I planted a box in W. Gallop at the Kitchen Ranch on Rte. 66 and nobody has visited. I hoped to see some action by the time I got back to MA but still no visitors. Can somebody go and stamp in so I don't have to worry about how lonely it must be. Thanks!

We're going to visit my mom for Christmas (I grew up in Los Alamos) and can't wait to get the boxes in LA, especially Deer Trap. I spent a lot of time there as a kid. It was about a mile from my house. I can't find any boxes in the Jemez though. Do you all know of any there or what I could put in the search? Here's hoping the altitude doesn't kill me - it's been a while!

Off the top of my head - there is a box in Cuba and a box in the Jemez Springs/ Battleship Rock area (may only be on LBNA. May also not be accessible in winter.) I'd try looking at the Mystery boxes in NM also.

Oh, I didn't think about searching for mystery boxes. Unfortunately i'm not very good at figuring them out. Luckily I have months before I go, the only one that made sense to me at first glance was the Vexing Letterboxing Anomaly one but we're not going to be in that part of the state. I'd love to find the battleship one. We will be going there anyways to take my daughter to hunt for fossils.

The box at Battleship Rock is at McCauley Warm Springs and is hidden by a girlscout troop called the Green Girls (on LBNA) it is a good hike and I'm not sure about doing it in the winter. Our troop was going to find it around July but 10-15 thousand "Rainbow Family" members were in Cuba and Jemez for their big gathering on the 4th.

I grew up in Santa Fe and moved to White Rock my junior year. You don't appreciate it until your not there anymore. I too would love to find boxes in both towns. Have a nice visit over Christmas. - Aspen

I grew up in New Mexico and will be bringing my husband and daughter to visit in December. We will in Los Alamos from around the 21st to 28th. We would like to meet some of the few boxers that seem to be in that area (Los Alamos and Santa Fe area). Anybody interested? We should have some hitchikers, cooties, and maybe even some boxes to spread around the state. A group we meet with each month here in GA is interested in sending some that way.
