I have been fortunate as people have had serious injuries, etc. while boxing, so my 'worsts' are relative, but yeah, the lack of having gloves gets worse... http://www.atlasquest.com/boards/messages.html?gStartId=690229;gThreadId=99843

(But I carry a cheap pair of gardening gloves. And never put my hand where I can't see first!)

Note to self: Whenever I do finally manage to cross Foraych off my letterboxing stalker list, be sure to pack a hazmat suit ...

but I'm planning to bring a pair of leather work gloves when I head out to a Western state soon.

I have a leather glove in my backpack… not that I use it very often. A stick or hiking pole is good too. Now what makes you think you don't have rattlesnakes, black widows, brown recluse and copperheads. They all reside in Massachusetts. Not to mention squirrels, mice, rats etc. that live in hidy holes. I don't want to be bit by any wild animal.

With the mental image I got of a pouch filled with pee sloshing around, I had this feeling your worst involved poo. I guess sometimes #1 and #2 are non-sequential.

Lol! The hazmat suit probably isn't a bad idea if we are hitting the trails...i find all the weird stuff (my #3 grossest box was one that a beaver died on top of - probably three days before I found it -stinky and bloated!).

I do look forward to meeting at some point too.

No, you can't wear gloves while stamping, or closing baggies...well, maybe one hand.

Now we know why Michael Jackson only wore one glove. ;-)

I usually try to keep a pair of gardening gloves (leather and canvas) in my boxing bag, just in case. I haven't needed them too often, but I've been glad I had them when I did.

Evalenne, Red Fox and I were boxing a few years ago at a park.

Red Fox came out of the bathroom holding the wet clues. He had accidentally dropped them in the toilet before flushing. He rinsed them off as best he could but had to hold the clues for the rest of the boxes and I had to log in for him.

Evalenne and I called him Potty Hands for the rest of the day.

Fast forward to this last July. Red Fox and I are at the courthouse and we have just gotten our marriage license.

Before we leave, he needs to use the bathroom, so I took the envelope with the license from him. He said, "Yes, I don't want to be Potty Hands again with that."

Thanks, Mim! This is what I'm afraid of doing!!

Thank you! I don't know if we'll have time, though. We're traveling from SLC to Vegas for 10 days, hitting 4 of the 5 Utah National Parks, along with some other sights. Our schedule is pretty crazy!

We'll be in SLC tomorrow. :^)

We do have poisonous critters in MA, but you'd have to work pretty hard to find them, unlike in other parts of the country! The things I worry about most here are ticks, stinging insects, and poison ivy.

I have boxed in a large variety of environments, and ALWAYS have sturdy gloves with me. Even around my home territory where cactus, scorpions, and poisonous snakes are not a hazard, there are still stinging nettles, other stickery plants, and biting/stinging critters, not to mention mud and muck. It is easy to slip on and off as needed. A few discreet pokes with my trekking pole first, assures me that something won't jump out and surprise me, but I appreciate it when people DON'T hack up the entire area with sticks trying to dig out a box. That much disturbance of the hiding spot can make it difficult to replant and restore so that it looks natural and undisturbed to passersby.

Excellent pointers, WW!

Our poison ivy may look a little different than what you have in the NE. It's three shiny leaves are usually at the top of a single stalk about 1-2 feet tall. The best way I think to identify it is that the terminal leaf extends from it's own petiole which is about 1/2 inch long. The two leaves below the terminal leaf come out on opposite sides of the stem and do not have the 1/2 long petiole.
It's fall here in northern UT and the p.i. is turning bright red - pretty easy to spot. But I don't know if it turns red in southern UT. Oh, and it can produce white waxy-looking berries in the fall.
I've never seen p.i. here in the hairy vine form that climbs trees, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist.
There won't be any p.i. in the arid locations (like Arches or Bryce) but look for it anywhere there is water, even a little creek (like in Zion).
Here's a good example.
Here it's turning red in fall.
We also have sumac here in both arid and wetter areas. It should be turning red now, too. I've never tested it to see if it's poison sumac since I react so terribly to p.i.

I would love to meet you. But tomorrow is no good for me. How long will you be in SLC?

The best way I think to identify it is that the terminal leaf extends from it's own petiole which is about 1/2 inch long.

The best way to identify poison ivy is to look for the plants that grow near my boxes. ;-)

Seriously, the very first box that I planted was in a field of poison ivy. Boxer Lover would have been the first to find this box except for the poison ivy. She informed me of the problem. I read up on poison ivy and found that 10% - 15% of people aren't allergic to it. I purposely exposed myself and found I'm not allergic. (I know, people can later develop an allergic reaction to it.) I later went and pulled the poison ivy so that people could safely get to the box.

I've since moved the box so that it is much closer to the trail and away from the poison ivy. You still have to deal with the rose bush though; It's also a muggle deterrent and related to the subject of the box.

I now know how to identify poison ivy, but that didn't stop me from planting another box near it. The poison ivy wasn't growing at the time that I planted that box. Boxer Lover (again) discovered the poison ivy near my box, but it isn't as near to my box. I didn't move my box but I put a warning in my clue for that box.

I've only got the one in the rose bush. It fits the theme of the box. But you approach from the side so you don't have to deal with the thorns.

My geocaches, on the other hand, I try to plant in Russian olives. I have about half a dozen in such places.
