Ship of Fools 2012 Event Stamp

Description

Come and join The Grateful Letterboxers for a week of fun in 2012 at our 6th annual event! Once again we plan to take over a large portion of Camp Lorraine, located in the heart of Harold Parker State Forest in Andover MA. Stay for a whole week and attempt to get every letterbox in town, or just come for a long weekend of fun! The campsites are all very nice and they (currently) are only $12 to $14 per night for up to 4 people or a family. We plan to have campfire socials, hot dog roasts, s'more toasts, night boxing and other assorted fun. Tentatively, our Saturday plans are to gather inside the campground on the field opposite Frye Pond for a bring-your-own picnic lunch. Volleyball, horseshoes and plenty of boxing to follow! Stay tuned for more details, but clear your calendars now and save the date!!! Campsites can be reserved 6 months in advance after Jan 1st, 2012. DON'T MISS THE BOAT!!!! ;o)

If you can't work out a camping trip, you can visit for just the day. The fee is $5 per car, so carpool with your friends! But seriously - you don't want to miss all the camping festivities! Make an effort to join the campers for at least a two day stay!!!

Jan 14, 2012: It's Reservation Time!!!
Ahoy!!!

The Ship of Fools is on the move and it's time to reserve your Port-o-call! Typically the campgrounds are completely booked in July, so don't delay!!! Here is the reservation link:
http://www.reserveamerica.com/camping/Harold_Parker_State_Forest/r/campgroundDetails.do?page=details&contractCode=MA&parkId=32608&topTabIndex=CampingSpot

As in previous years, Grateful Row will be centered along the "300's". If you want to be near most of the action, book your sites close by in the 200's or 30's. Also, Zess has graciously reserved the group site (G01) Thursday thru Saturday for those who would like to camp together! That site can accommodate 10-40 people and 4 vehicles. Fees for the group site will be less - $10 per tent for one night, #15 for two nights, or $20 for three! Payment will be needed in advance, so please contact zess directly if your are interested!

This year we are also asking that someone consider taking sites 56, 52 and 54. These three sites have access to the internal trails that we would like to use for night boxing, so other Muggles won't be disturbed! All three are nice large sites. Please let me know if you are willing to grab one of them and be a Night Boxing Host!!!

After you make your reservations, PLEASE let us know where you are staying! We're compiling a list to share with everyone! Also, We're asking all campers to carve a small boat that is one color (preferably not black) and place a box under your site#. Any watercraft will do - sailboat, speedboat, Naval ship, square rigger, submarine, hovercraft, hydroplane, rowboat........... Use your imagination! Max size is 2"x2" and it needs a bow line. Add your trail name in if you wish (like USS TMP). The "Tug Boat" will be located at site #307, so you can start your tow line there!!! Please join the tracker here:
http://www.atlasquest.com/showinfo.html?gTrackerId=6109

Come stay for a full week, half week, long weekend or just a couple of days! Whatever you decide, it's time to trim your sails and point your compass rose towards Andover! We're gonna have a Grateful Time!!!!!! ;o)

Pete

All boxes will need to be mailed within three month - on or before June 7th. This will give us one month to sort, fine tune, plant, write clues and print up packets. Please use a box that utilizes a rubber seal similar to the LocknLock construction. Thanks to all participants in advance!!! ;o)

Apr 18, 2012: Raffle Donations
Ahoy foolish shipmates!

Apr 19, 2012: 80 day til the Ship of Fools sets sail!
Ahoy my Grateful Friends!

The event is just around the corner and we hope you're getting excited! Now is the time to get your carvings finished and make sure to bring lots of ink when you come. We REALLY encourage all of you to spend at least a night or two at the campgrounds with everyone else. Although Saturday will be a lot of fun, the best times will be had around the late night campfires and boxing leisurely with other letterboxers during the preceding days. I don't think it will be possible to get all the stamps and socialize with new and old friends in just one day. We will have night boxes available so don't miss out! It's not too late to book a site. Feel free to contact us if you have any questions or need any additional assistance, especially if you are traveling here from distant locations.

We do have one major change - The Saturday event will be held at the Stearns Pond Picnic area located behind the main Harold Parker State Forest Headquarters on Middleton Road. This is a BEAUTIFUL location and we are very happy that the HP staff is allowing us to use it! It is right on the water with fantastic views. There is plenty of parking for everyone and we expect to have Gate #4 open for easy access. Parking will be near trail marker NA1. Exact times and details will be posted closer to the event date so stay tuned! Here is a nice map of the area:
http://www.mass.gov/dcr/parks/trails/harold.pdf

There are still a few spots open on the stamp trackers, so add your names if you would like to contribute something special:
http://www.atlasquest.com/showinfo.html?gTrackerId=6245
http://www.atlasquest.com/showinfo.html?gTrackerId=6246

Pack lots of sunshine and happiness to spread around! Organize your camping gear and we'll see you in 80 days!!!! ;o)

Pete

May 24, 2012: Fun Facts!
In addition to a table of wonderful raffle items, we will have one table of items that are for sale. This will include Grateful Letterboxer Patches, MA Patches, NH Patches, ME Patches, Awesome logbooks and other assorted items. Of special note will be a custom "Ship of Fools" Pathtag which is designed and funded by graywolfe! If anyone else has special items they would like to add to the "for sale" table, we'll save you some space - just let us know in advance!

Only 45 days til the event kicks off! Time to dig out the Tye-dye shirts and don you Jester hats. Pack up the camping gear and stock up on colorful ink/markers - We'll see you soon!!!

May 30, 2012: Grateful Camping--don't miss out!
Hello all ye Grateful Shipmates!

As we all gear up for the voyage of foolishness there is lots of activity going on around Andover. Prankster Pete has been working tirelessly to get the event location and surrounding trails in shape for our journey, with help from some of our grateful friends!

Now, let’s talk camping!! The campsites are definitely filling up around the area of Grateful Row. As of this moment, there are only 13 sites left in the entire campground! A couple of them are pretty close to Grateful Row, so be sure to make your reservations soon!

I’ve had a couple of people ask about places to pitch their tent. I have the Group site, which is right around the corner from Grateful Row, reserved at this time. If there is enough interest in people staying there so I can cover the cost, it will be a great place for people to share and enjoy getting to know some of our grateful mateys! If, however, there are not enough people wanting to stay there I will have to drop the reservation. Sooooo, I have three questions:

1) Who would be interested in staying at the Group site?
2) If I have to drop the Group site, does anyone have extra room on their site such that they might be willing to share with someone looking for a place to pitch a tent?
3) If you haven’t told me yet which site you have booked, and you want to be included in the “Address Book,” please let me know!

I cannot wait to see everyone and embark on the Ship of Fools! ☺

~zess~

Jun 17, 2012: Group Campsite?
Ahoy there again, Mateys! I just want to put out another call to muster up interest in the Group campsite. If you would like to stay there, the fees are cheaper than individual sites: $10 per tent for one night, $15 for two nights, or $20 for three! Please let me know if you are interested, and also which nights you would like to camp on the group site, and then I can work out the financial feasibility of keeping the reservation.

Also, if you haven't given me your site # and you'd like to be included on the Campers Address List, please let me know asap. Include the nights you will be camping.

Also, if anyone has space for an extra tent on their site & are willing to offer it up if need be for site-less folks (if the Group site doesn't work out), please let me know that! :-)

Jun 20, 2012: Ship of Fools Raffle
Shiver me timbers (ooh, how I wish I could shiver on this 90 degree day!) and yo ho ho...

Our event is nigh upon us and we are still awaiting treasures for our raffle. If you signed up and haven't sent your items, please AQmail me for my address. If you would rather bring them to the event, please AQmail me to let me know what you are bringing and we'll arrange a meet up so we can have them in advance for set-up purposes. If you haven't signed up yet, consider making a small donation. The raffle adds a bit of high seas adventure to the day.

And you really don't want any scurvy-laden pirates showing up at your door to pillage and plunder in search of raffle items now do you?

Looking forward to seeing all of you in a few weeks,
HarmonyMA/Nancy

Jun 27, 2012: Group campsite
Last call for anyone interested in camping in the group site. I think it will be ok for Fri/Sat, but it would be great if we could get a couple more people there to totally cover the cost. :-)

If you weren't planning to camp, I want to STRONGLY encourage you to do so!!! We have so much fun at the campground--imagine, not just a one-day, limited-hour event, but a 2,3,4, or more day event! :-)

Please let me know in the next couple of days.

Thanks!

~zess~

Jul 2, 2012: Anyone staying at a local hotel?
Ahoy there, Mateys!

We have a couple of travelers from afar coming for the event, staying at a local hotel, and wondering whether there are any other hotel-dwellers. Please email me if so & I can put together a list if you folks want to get together to frolick! :-)

Jul 5, 2012: Campsite Mailboxes
Hi All...Below is a message from MMACJ re: a campsite mailbox, which is something we had kids do last year, which was really fun! Everyone feel free to have one at their site! We will have a bulletin board up on Grateful Row & we can have a list of sites w/mailboxes that you can sign up on. Here's MMACJ's message:

Like last year, we will have out campsite Mailbox hanging on the tree with our site number on it. Feel free to stop by, it is a new stamp this year. I'll have LTC sized cards in there for you to stamp on (one stamp per card please). If we're at out campsite, feel free to come visit, if not, feel free to just stamp in.

If any kids leave the kids of MMACJ a message, with their site number on it - I am sure they will "mail' a little something back. For those of you who have no clue what I am talking about here is a link (http://familyfun.go.com/crafts/camp-mail-898555/) We loved finding mailbox stamps at Andover last year!

Jul 8, 2012: clues, Clues, CLUES!!!
Ahoy Shipmates! All hands on deck - The event is about to begin!!!

Pack your camping gear, fill up those coolers and get ready for a boatload of fun! The Ship of Fools has successfully docked in Andover, all the boxes are in place and the clues have been written. The campers are encouraged to search out these hidden gems at their leisure during the week. Here is a link to the eight page clue packet which you may print up in advance if desired:
http://www.atlasquest.com/boxes/clue/?gBoxId=201491

The weather looks perfect for a fun-filled camping week! Don't forget to bring your compass, lots of ink pads, colorful markers, new log books and fun stamps for planting around the campsites. Bug spray is a must to keep the skeeters and horseflies away, and of course beware of poison ivy and ticks too. Plan to bring a picnic lunch to the event on Saturday and chip in on community feasts at the campgrounds if you attend. There are plenty of stores to restock your supplies within a very short drive, so don't worry about packing food for the entire week. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask!

See you all soon!!! ;o)

Jul 8, 2012: Clue Packet adjustment!
One incorrect flag on page #5 (Fool's Gold - Box #8) has been replaced. Print up a new page or note the change on your current copy!

Jul 10, 2012: Camping Info
Hello, Foolish Campers!

(Note for Foolish Non-campers…you are welcome to visit the campground, but please be aware that you need to pay the park’s day fee ($5) and visiting hours are 8am to 8pm)

Below you will find a brief summary of some campground rules, a list of things you might want to pack, a schedule for the planned events at the campground, and the most current Camping Fools Address List. Mostly we’ll just be hanging out having fun, and the schedule is just guidance as to where you can expect to find Grateful Letterboxers gathered together. ☺ Use the Camping Fools Address List to find other boxers with whom to hit the trails for the letterboxes planted for the event as well as the LOADS of letterboxes all around Andover!

“Grateful Row” is the small street with sites 301-307. If you run into any problems, please feel free to hop over and ask for help! The Grateful Letterboxers are an AMAZING group of friendly, fun-loving folks, and a helping hand can always be found!

There will be a bulletin board at sites 304/306 (zess & muddy paws sites) where any updates to the schedule or address list or whatever will be posted. If you have a special letterbox you want to plant around the campground, please feel free to post the clues on the bulletin board. And, make sure you look there for clues that others will post!! We’ll put up a list for people to sign up if they have a kid “mailbox” on their site.

A few important points:
• Check-in time: 1 pm
• Check-out time: 11 am
• Quiet hours are 10 pm to 7 am
• Visitors are required to pay the park's day use fee ($5) to visit in the campground, and visiting hours are 8am to 8pm.
• Children 16 yrs and under are required to wear a helmet when riding bikes
• Pets must be leashed, & waste picked up
• Alcohol is prohibited
**Please, please, please, whatever you do, be discrete and respectful toward the campground staff. They have been wonderful every year and we have always gotten positive feedback about our group of campers. We have OODLES of people signed up to camp, so please don’t behave in any way that would make trouble for the group. We want to be welcomed back warmly year after year! Just an fyi, rangers CAN search coolers if they suspect alcohol use, so if you choose to disregard this prohibition, PLEASE keep your coolers in your cars (and use plastic cups rather than carrying around bottles or cans)**

Full campground rules can be found here: http://www.mass.gov/dcr/recreate/campInfo/camprules.htm

You may not bring in your own firewood into the campground!! This is REALLY essential for us to save our trees. Pests (especially the Asian Longhorned Beetle) and diseases can be spread to new forests. We don’t want to lose our trees!!! More than 25,000 trees have been cut down in Greater Worcester b/c of the Asian Longhorned Beetle infestation. We are all responsible for preventing the spread of pests and diseases to clean forests. Firewood can be purchased at the campground.

Some things to consider packing (this is not an all-inclusive list): tent (a ground cover can be handy, such as a tarp or a drop cloth) / hammer (for tent stakes) / sleeping bags / pillows / sleeping mat or air mattress if you’ve got it / flashlights / extra flashlight batteries / lantern / bug spray / sunscreen / cooler with ice / food / water / lawn chairs / propane (if you have a camping stove or lantern that uses it) / matches or lighter / duct tape (you never know) / first aid stuff (including anti-itch cream, tweezers, Technu) / paper towels / tissues / garbage bags / ziplock baggies / cooking & eating ware and utensils / cups / shower shoes / hat / bathing suit and towel / toys / lots of umbrellas and raincoats (to keep away the rain) / LETTERBOXING STUFF / CLUES / PERSONAL TRAVELERS LIST

Remember that along with friendly campers and fun-filled Tupperware, the woods are filled with mosquitoes, ticks, and poison ivy. Please take appropriate precautions!

Foolish Frolicking Aboard the Ship of Fools
**Any updates to this schedule will be posted on the bulletin board at sites 304-306**

Many Grateful Letterboxers have already pitched their tents, so be sure to seek them out when you arrive! A big group of folks will arrive Wed, an even bigger group will arrive Thurs, and we expect all passengers to have boarded by Fri! Don’t forget to print the Listing of Campsite boats to plan your port-o-calls. Start at site 307 with the Merry Pranksters’ Tugboat and Solo-Wanderer’s ship, which are already in place. Then make sure to visit first the sites of anyone on the list who might be leaving early, so that ship doesn’t sail without you. ☺

The Campground Event stamp, Foolish Campers, will be planted somewhere on site 304, and we’ll post the clues on the bulletin board as soon as they are ready, which will be Thursday at the latest.

Wednesday
People on Grateful Row (the 300s sites) will start arriving in the afternoon; feel free to come over any time and play! We’ll bring what we have (e.g., balls, Frisbees, sidewalk chalk), and a campfire is a sure bet!

Thursday
The Jester Staffs may point the way to Muddy Paws’ Pop Goes the Weasel Series (11 stamps). These boxes will be available until checkout on Sunday (11:00 am).
Letterbox all day long; or gather on Grateful Row; or swim; or go to the playground; or whatever. An evening campfire along the Row is almost guaranteed!

Friday
Letterbox all day long; or gather on Grateful Row; or swim; or go to the playground; or whatever (sound familiar?)
6:00 pm: Campfire gathering at site 304; feel free to bring your own weenies/food/snacks
8:30 pm: Night boxing (available both Friday & Saturday nights); Gather at site 304/306 to get navigation charts for Solo-Wanderer’s Ships that Pass by Fools in the Night Series

Saturday
9:00 am: Event gates open at Stearns Pond!! In case you missed it on the Grateful Letterboxers board: This year we will be asking for $5 per group. This will cover the cost of the clue packets, port-o-potty and all excess will be donated to HP! Each group will get one clue packet and one raffle ticket. Larger groups may purchase additional raffle tickets for $5 each, but each individual may only win once so one ticket max per person. All tickets will be drawn from one bag and the winner will pick anything on the table. We will draw as many tickets as we have donations. The tickets will be drawn at the end of the picnic lunch around 1:00.

Jul 10, 2012: Still room at the Group site & now open on Thursday nite too
Hi All,

If you have been considering maybe, possibly camping, but figured you hadn't quite got your act together to make it happen, I want to encourage you to give it a go! There's still plenty of room at the Group site. And, since there are enough people to cover the cost, the group site will also be available for Thursday night (in addition to Fri/Sat). So, beg or borrow a tent, take a day off work, and/or step out of your comfort zone and join us for some camping fun! :-)

Jul 11, 2012: Raffle Donations
Ahoy mateys!

We have a great raffle planned with letterboxing items worth their weight in doubloons. What we don't have is many items with kid appeal.

So, if you are still considering donating a raffle item, please bring something with kid appeal. I can be found at site 304 from Friday afternoon on (unless, of course, I am out on the trails.)

Jul 19, 2012: kayaking fools
Although only a handful of fools are in the video--only those who were out as Eric paddled around filming--it will surely bring back the peaceful feelings everyone felt out on Stearns Pond that beautiful day.

Aug 5, 2012: Ship of Fools photo slideshow
Ahoy there, Grateful Friends!

As the vividness of the Ship of Fools groovy vibes fades, a gift from several photographers (Guzzlin' Gal, The 3 Terruso's, Wormtown Wanderers, graywolfe, Choi, The Merry Pranksers, Muddy Paws, and zess the treehuggers) and slideshow editor e of zess, is here to turn up the saturation. Sixteen minutes of Ship of Fools memories. We hope you enjoy!

Peace,

~zess~
