Description

Overview
LAPH 0.5 (Letterboxing Annual Puzzle Hunt) is a single-day letterboxing and puzzle extravaganza along a two-mile walking tour of the Haight-Ashbury and Alamo Square neighborhoods of San Francisco. Throughout the day, you'll find over 20 letterboxes, solve numerous beginner-friendly puzzles, and learn all about various notable SF residents.

LAPH 0.5 first took place on December 3, 2017, and by popular demand, I’m re-running the exact same event again on April 21, 2018! If you participated in this event the first time around, you'll probably not want to attend LAPH 0.5 Redux, but keep an eye out for new puzzle events later this year!

This is a FREE event, though donations to help cover material and operating costs are welcomed and will be reciprocated with a special bonus stamp ;)

Teams
This event is best experienced on teams of 3-5 people, but please note that this is NOT A COMPETITION. Solo solvers may contact me privately to be matched with a team. Puzzle enthusiasts new to letterboxing and letterboxing enthusiasts new to puzzling are all welcome.

★ In addition to signing up on the AtlasQuest event, each team must fill out the team sign-up form before April 1, 2018 (it’s no joke!) ★

To avoid bottlenecking, teams will be assigned staggered start times at which to begin the course, but all teams may arrive around 10am to begin working on the puzzles.

Puzzles
Each team will receive the clue & puzzle packet and the event stamp at the starting location. Some boxes also involve in-the-field puzzles. The primary puzzles for this event are more fun than frustrating, and there will be more challenging bonus puzzles available. And I’ll happily provide hints as needed! That said, if you hate puzzles and creative thinking or expect easy boxes that are spaced a few feet apart from each other, this is probably not the event for you.

Supplies
In addition to standard letterboxing gear, make sure to bring lots of colored ink pads, pencils, scissors, tape, a compass, charged smartphones, and a clipboard/hard surface to write on.

Schedule
10am ~ Gather near Fell & Ashbury for event stamp, clues, and puzzles
11am onwards ~ Head out on your hunt!
3pm ~ Metas and wrap-up at Alamo Square Park
4pm ~ LAPHter Party at Barrel Head Brewhouse

LAPHter Party
The event will end at Barrel Head Brewhouse for dinner and drinks. If you don’t get the final (meta) boxes at Alamo Square in time, they’ll all be available at the after-party also, along with a special after-party event stamp! Additionally, you’re welcome to bring other puzzles or puzzley event boxes to the after-party!

Mar 19, 2018: Team sign-up form
Thank you all for signing up! Just a reminder that all teams (recommended 3-5 people) should also fill out the team sign-up form by April 1 so I know how many supplies to prepare.

If you want some warm-up puzzling before this event, the next Puzzled Pint is taking place on Tuesday, April 10 in various locations around the country, including Silicon Valley, SF, East Bay, and Portland.

Apr 6, 2018: Two weeks until LAPH!
Just over two weeks until LAPH 0.5 Redux! A few updates and reminders:

- If you haven't yet filled out the team sign-up form, please do so here ASAP! And if you have any friends interested in this event, spread the word! There are still a few remaining open spots.

- While this event was previously listed as being kid-friendly, one of our indoor host venues had to change, so a couple primary boxes for the event are now located in a really cool arcade/bar that's unfortunately 21+ all day. Please let me know if this will be an issue for your group, and if so, I can make accommodations for you to get these stamps an alternative way.

- The primary walking route is only around 2 miles, but it's in a fairly hilly section of San Francisco, so make sure to wear comfy walking sneakers. You'll also want to bring fully charged cell phones, fully charged brains, pencils, scissors, tape, a clipboard/hard surface to write on, standard letterboxing supplies, and your legal ID.

- The primary sequence of stamps forms a 5.5" x 8.5" image, so larger logbooks are recommended. I'll also have some copies of the event stamp pre-printed on cardstock for those with only smaller logbooks.

See you all at 10am on Saturday, April 21, 2018 at the circle of benches near the place of play near Fell & Ashbury!

Happy trails / puzzling!

Apr 22, 2018: Thanks for attending LAPH 0.5 Redux!
Thank you all for coming out to the Letterboxing Annual Puzzle Hunt 0.5 Redux yesterday! While I have fun designing puzzles, carving stamps, and crafting experiences, it's seeing people interact with these creations that is truly exhilarating to me - so thanks for all your dedication and perseverance throughout the event!!! It was a long and exhausting day, and all teams did so well!

If you took photos during the event that you'd be comfortable sharing, send them my way!

If anyone wants to write a few sentences of testimonial (hopefully positive ;)) about this event that I could use, anonymously or semi-anonymously, in publicity for future puzzle events I create, I'd appreciate it!

If your team didn't have a chance to finish the metas for this event, you can contact me to schedule a time to continue working on these boxes. Let me know if you need any further hints/nudges ;)

It was wonderful meeting and seeing you all yesterday!

Happy trails and happy puzzling!
