I like Northwest Arts and Crafts here in West Seattle, if you ever happen to find yourself out in these parts looking for letterboxes. I'm not familiar enough with Kent to know what you can find there, though.

Or, you can order online from Mister Art. http://www.atlasquest.com/marketplace/misterart/ If you follow my links, I even get kickbacks. ;o) Okay, they call it commissions, but it's basically the same thing, right? =)

Quote Please advise me where to go locally to buy supplies. I want to get carving material and carving tools without spending a ton of money!
Thank you!

I've found the least expensive locally available carving material at Art Co in Tacoma (6th Ave & Hwy 16). They have the Speedball carving tools with various tips and also Mars Carve in small and large pieces. Oh--don't forget to look for a store coupon when you're there--I got 20% off just because I spied a coupon in a basket as we walked through the store! Otherwise, the pink stuff should be available at Michaels although you have to go up and down every single aisle to find it and don't bother asking an associate there--they won't know what you're asking about--but despite that they usually have it. Otherwise, I order my supplies from the internet.

There is Daniel Smith..they have internet ordering, and a store in both Seattle and Bellevue. At least in their catalog and the internet, they have the LARGE sheets of carving medium...haven't been to the store yet, but a family member goes their often with their job and says it's a mecca of sorts! Google Daniel Smith, and that will get you the website and directions and such.
And ditto what was said about Micheals....found their carving supplies completly by accident wondering around the store...the same store I had asked at least 3 employees if they had it....
And....Welcome SeattleDawn...I hope our paths cross sometime!

At Michaels, 85% of the time I find the pink stuff and carving tools in with the canvas and oil paint supplies. The other 15% of the time it is with the rubberstamping stuff. I have no idea why they put it back there with the "real art" art supplies! :-) (as opposed to the "crafty art" art supplies) Take your 40% off Michaels coupon with you too!!

My favorite place to buy supplies is the UW Bookstore on 15th Ave and 43rd St in Seattle. They have lots of different tools (including Speedball and various tips), and several different kinds of carving media (including MasterCarve, my personal favorite, in many different shapes and sizes). They also have a ZILLION different sizes and shapes of little notebooks, many which are quite reasonably priced. You can park for free in their lot right behind the store if you get your parking validated inside (up to 2 hrs). It's not very close to my house, but it's pretty easy to get to if you go on the weekends.
