I just finished "Go Set a Watchman" and "How Dogs Love Us"
I enjoyed watchman...I didn't think Atticus came across as terrible, I also thought it was an important historical piece. I wish I knew what happened to Boo though.
Also enjoyed the Dogs book (read for my book club) Very readable, and interesting too. More of a memoir of a scientific experiment than a discourse on what was learned.

Currently in the middle of Roughing it by Mark Twain (also a book club book); and "Power of Half". And I need a light fantasy candy read.

Armada is not as good as RPO but I'm not sure *any* book could be. It's in a similar vein with the 80s video games, lots of similarities to The Last Starfighter. It was very entertaining!

I'm currently re-reading my Anne of Green Gables books--because we are planning a trip to Prince Edward Island (and other places Canadian) this fall!

Recently finished:

**The River of Doubt: Theodore Roosevelt's Darkest Journey--fascinating history about a trip down an uncharted river in South America. A trip that nearly killed him.

**The Buried Giant by Ishiguro--not as good as Remains of the Day but still thought-provoking.

**The Oregon Trail: A New American Adventure--interesting read about a man and his brother who drove a mule-pulled covered wagon along the Oregon Trail

The latest Kinsey Milhone novel is coming out soon--or maybe it is already out. Called X. Only 2 more letters and then she is done :(

I HATED Wild--couldn't get past how irresponsible she was and quit after a couple of chapters, hoping she would fall off a cliff or be eaten by a bear! However, I have only found one other person who had the same reaction.

I'm back at work, so am doing lots of kid lit and lighter reading.

Just reread the Earth's Children series by Auel--always thought provoking every time I read it, though I was not overly enchanted with the final book.

REALLY enjoyed the Paris Wife, about Ernest Hemmingway's first marriage. If you liked LOving Frank, you will probably like this.

Did not like All the Light We cannot See or Girl on the Train. Couldn't get into either of them

Litterary Lady, Ryan and I BOTH HATED WILD!!! So you you are not alone. And I recently watched the movie and was disgusted once again. I HATE that they market it as a PCT book/movie. It is really about her issues with her mother's death and addiction. The trail is only a side note. And she is totally NOT a role model for how to hike the PCT. Most people who are long distance hikers and do the PCT and other trails are not fans of WILD.

I'm currently reading 'Child of God' by Cormac McCarthy. It's got a weird start to it, but I think I'll like it.

Forgot to mention, I really enjoyed One Thousand White Women.

And, to actually answer the original question--what am I reading for Fall--the next couple months are dedicated to finding some fun books to read to the kiddos in the library, but I have Game of Thrones waiting for my first long break.

I love the 'Blue Castle', too - did you know that Colleen McCullough was accused of plagiarizing it for her novel 'The Ladies of Missalonghi'?

I didn't...but now 'Ladies of Missalonghi' is going on my TBR list...
:-) Just out of curiosity

I've always wondered about how authors can be sure they aren't pulling something out of their subconscious while writing. I know I read a LOT; and good authors are supposed to read a LOT; but the things I read don't always stay sorted into neat little piles of "Tamora Pierce" and "LM Montgomery" and "School textbook" or whatever. It all gets sifted and filtered and intermingled...I can see how easy it would be to plagiarize without meaning to. Especially when we have so much media consumed everyday.

I really liked Armada as well. We are huge RPO fans around here, so we preordered that one.

Just read One Girl One Dream and it was a good snapshot to follow up watching the documentary Maiden Trip. But I had no idea something so deeply embracing sailing and that life could so completely turn me off of the idea! Looks like we will stay day sailors and not become round-the-world cruisers!

I also finally read The Rosie Project and enjoyed that immensely.

And for a light fluffy set of reads: Crazy Rich Asians and its follow up China Rich Girlfriend. Both were enormously fun.

Up next is Neurotribes. It is fantastic so far.

I hated it too! So much! She just seemed so self absorbed and self-destructive. And I never got the feeling by the end of it that she had overcome that aspect of herself. I kept at it through to the end though. But I had no desire at all to see the movie because of that.

ANOTHER book to add to my "to-read" list now! I didn't realize that she wrote other books.

I completely agree. I really love Harper Lee's 'voice' even if it is a rough draft manuscript as "Watchman" was.

Totally agree. Our movie group chose to see "Wild" and I refused to see it. I read both of Ryan's (Green Tortuga) Appalatian Trail thru-hike blogs and learned so much about long-term hiking. I thought, Reese Witherspoon's character should have read THAT!!

I didn't care much for "Wild" myself. I would highly recommend two other books about women walking - one who walked across America in the late 1800's and one who walked the Appalachian Trail several times in the 1950's (she was in her late sixties at the time). The first is "Bold Spirit: Helga Estby's Forgotten Walk Across Victorian America" by Linda Lawrence Hunt and the second is "Grandma Gatewood's Walk" by Ben Montgomery.

I second that about Wild....not my kind of book. A similar but different book is Miles from Nowhere by Barbara Savage. Barbara and her husband bicycle around the world. Great story! Here is one review: "This is a true story of a husband / wife worldwide adventure from 25 years ago. Barbara Savage chronicles a two year long world tour she and her husband, Larry made beginning and ending in their home state of California, on bicycles! This is not your ususal granola eating, wimpy envoirnmentalist travelogue, but a gritty, realistic and at times humerous tale of the people and places they encounter along the way. From friendly ranchers in South Dakota to motorcycle riding bandits in the middle east, this story has it all. It details the efforts of the author and her husband to overcome and survive hard places and unusual cultures." I highly recommend it
