Sounds like the clerk was stamp happy. Maybe some white-out or just scribble over the marks. I've seen scribbing on envelopes I've received. It shouldn't affect future mailings.

Honestly, mine come back with all kinds of cancellations on them and nothing has ever been said nor do I have any issues with mailings. You can try to use hand sanitizer to remove the marks... Hope this helps!!

No idea on preventing it in the future, but if you are concerned about problems with using the envelope again, you can cut a a piece of paper to the size of the front of the envelope and tape it in place using packing tape. I did that after we moved.....

yes, i agree with using alcohol to remove the marks, or StazOn stamp cleaner or GooBegone

I use alcohol to remove stamping and perm. marker too. As long as it is on a slick surface, it works well.

I knew I was using the wrong flavor/brand.............. got to love it!!!

Also, use a dry erase marker and scribble on the cancellation marks. Then use the dry eraser and they come right off.

Tape a piece of paper over the extra postmarks. particularly if it hit an untapped area.
