Peace Sanctuary Nature Preserve Boxes

While letterboxing at the Peace Sanctuary (Mystic, CT) today, we were stopped by a woman who questioned what we were doing. She said she was a member of the private group that owned the preserve, that she had seen letterboxes/"trash" in the preserve, but had never seen anyone there before. We showed her a clue that said "permission has been granted for letter boxers", and she said she doesn't recall any permission being given. Perhaps those who have planted here should consider (re)seeking permission, retrieving their boxes, or just wait and see what happens?

I've found a lot of those boxes and hiked the preserve. I've never seen an owner there. That area is controlled by the Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center. I had thought they were a non-profit.

I wouldn't worry too much about that. Anyone can "be a member" if they send in their $20 or whatever, and all the sudden they think they're entitled to speak on behalf of the organization. There are even problems with certain board members of these types of nonprofit groups getting carried away, taking actions and speaking to the press, saying things that are actually counter to the organization's wishes.
For example, our local land trust has a spruce tree that people in the neighborhood have been decorating at Christmas time. One of the Land Trust board members who lives nearby took it upon herself to set out a sign telling people the Land Trust didn't want anyone to decorate the tree. That lead to lots of upset people who have a family tradition of decorating the tree calling up the Land Trust president, and he didn't know anything about it. He had the signs removed and let people decorate the tree.
Congratulations

Sleeping Giant Masters 2019

When the trails finally reopen and time comes to check on boxes, it pretty much makes sense to make next year the time to formally earn a Giant Master title. Anyone who’d like to join me is welcome, and anyone who actually has a plan on how to hike it, I’d love the input.

When does the place reopen? We were planning on planting there on Sunday! I didn't even realize it'd been closed.

I’m hoping it opens in the Spring now but there still is no target date to open the trails.

I've read that the State will not reopen until all the trails have been deemed safe (blowdowns removed by volunteers). I just have to laugh, because when we have a big storm in Shelton, we're like, "Hey everybody! Help us clear the trails!" We would never close the trails because of blowdowns. I mean, it's a forest, and dead limbs and trees are falling naturally all the time. The trees that have already fallen are the safe ones.

Meanwhile I’ve not heard a peep about Wharton Brook State Park. Isn’t that a lot smaller?

It is much smaller. It's still closed, though it looks like most of the work is finished. They may be letting the fields settle and grass take root.

I boxed Wharton brook before the storm and most of the boxes listed were already missing, there were a lot of cut trees before that storm, I can only assume it’s worse now.

Happiest of birthdays!!
The trail we picked is on Ragged Mountain, because we wanted a long enough trail to put 40 stamps. As it turns out, it's rather ankle-twisty with lots of hills. Have fun!

A new Land Conservation Preserve that welcomes letterboxes
Board: State: Connecticut

The North Branford Land Conservation Trust will be holding a ribbon cutting ceremony at a new Preserve this Saturday, December 1st, with a hike at 9:30 and the ribbon cutting at 11:00. This new preserve is the Harrison Farm Preserve, 95 North Street, North Branford, CT. I planted a box! Check out AQ#300361.
I wanted to pass the word along that the Harrisons and the NBLCT will be delighted to have letterboxes planted in this woodland. I hope you will come visit and possibly plant!

Great news! And thank you for planting this new letterbox for the Illinois Bicentennial virtual event. We need about 40 more to reach our goal of 200 boxes -one box for each year Illinois has been a State! R and I have something in common- both of us grew up in Illinois!
