My hmmmm, which I'm sure someone will have an answer for, is how do people log finds on boxes (all of them) I had planted in an area YEARS ago that have all since lived their lives out and passed on. But what I mean is at one time. I'll come on AQ and see that someone found all my boxes in one day up half the state 5 years ago. And leave no comments. HHMMmmmmmm....

My ONLY idea, which would be a rare one, is that a boxing couple decided to have their own trailnames and the one is logging all their old finds, but it has happened quite a few times with the same boxes over the years.

I agree with the wait time and color. But I've tried everything that has passed through the shop that has been available for purchase so I would buy whatever webfoot sells ;)

I used to run to the PO also, but used wintergreen oil (has got to be synthetic). Since I moved I can't seem to find the same copier so I also got a laser printer and use wintergreen oil or acetone depending on the material since not all will work. When using wintergreen you wet the surface before placing your image facedown and pressing around to make sure I've gotten good contact. I then peel the paper back just a bit to make sure it worked, if it did I peel it off and let the material sit a few hours to let the toner cure back up. I really just use whats available to me, and what works together (since material isn't consistently available to me), and what I can get good detail with. Can take some experimenting, even after 10 years!

For any of you last-minute types, I had someone drop from the Pooh by Ernest Sheppard tracker. Interested? It does not require fancy backgrounds or coloring, since it is about plain sketches. I know, it's late in the "game", but the examples that have arrived are quite lovely, and you might possibly want to join.

Perhaps they are boxers who didn't feel the need to log their finds online at one time but then decided to log them after they realized that it is easier to search for boxes if you can eliminate ones you already found. And as for using the same date, I would probably do that also. After all, what does it really matter when you found them. If they are mass logging finds, it is probably easier to just keep using the same date instead of researching the exact find date for each.

I'm glad to hear someone else admit this as it seems that every time one small variable changes (brand of toner, printer, etc) all bets are off and I have to go thru the whole process of figuring out what will work for me.

I'd happily use 1/8" material, as I mount my stamps anyway.

Just a heads up to let you know that there is now a Box of the month right over the border in Union, CT. I placed it there hoping to get some Massachusetts visitors. It’s such an awesome series of boxes that come to visit each month and I would love for you guys to see them too.

March’s Box will be placed tomorrow or later today. ~TT

That's a good solution for stamping. But probably not for carving - I think mounting foam under the material while you carve, would allow too much "give" as you use pressure with your tools.

I joined AtlasQuest in January of 2005 but had been boxing since my first find in 2000. There weren't so many boxes back then, so it was relatively easy for me to go back to my logbooks and input the actual find date for each of my finds from 2000-2005.

I shake my head now at my former anal retentive obsessive compulsive need to have all my data perfect - I would keep an Excel spreadsheet with all my finds, locations, and dates, perfectly matching my actual physical logbook, updating it with each find, would then compare my spreadsheet to what my data said in LbNA, then compare that to what my data said in AtlasQuest. It all had to sync or I would go crazy. Yes, I'm a Virgo.

And no, I don't do that anymore.

shhh ~ it turns out, I can't handle numbers well enough to number my finds in my own logbook, losing track of what I am supposed to write as I turn the page, so AQ is the only "correct" logbook I have. Pages after page of scribbled out numbers, lo' these many years ago, are proof. No more! My logbooks are now collections of folk art, and the first image on each page is dated. They all have names, though, so I can log them here and keep track that way. Thank you, Ryan!

I started out well-intentioned, with a couple large ring binders and pocket pages.

Somewhere along the way, I got lazy about filing cards; now I have a Lock-n-lock with tradeable extras, a Velveeta box with precut cards ready to go, a shoebox full of swaps in baggies (not yet filed) and the original two binders not quite full.

I also have a nice plastic box from the hobby shop, 2.5 x 3.5 x 1, that has some of my best creations - traveling show and tell, if you will, except that I can't find it now...

I also use acetone and laser print transfers. When I bought a new printer I could not get a successful transfer. Then I changed carving material and transfers worked again. It is good to remove any glossy surface on the carving material with acetone or sand paper before attempting the transfer.

I do not remember that player making it to my Birthday Party for any other finds... We have had a few of our boxes with recorded finds that have not been logged in the boxes logbook. I know that sometimes it may be hard to work out the correct box that you have found when some have the same name as others.

What is the time difference between sneaking something in and a custom run? If it's only a few weeks, I wouldn't bother - if it's a few months...

I heard back from my production folks and it looks like it would be 8 - 10 weeks for a full production run with my specified thickness, width and length.

I'm still waiting for a couple more samples (at 1/8" this time) to try, so if they're big enough, I may be sending out a couple pieces for people to test and give me more feedback.

If the test carving team comes back with positive enough ratings, is a short, "sneak between" production run of this stuff at about 1/8" something that you'd be interested buying, or would you rather wait for a while for the thicker, custom run stuff?

I'd be willing to try it. What will the shipping price be for the size (length & width) that you're thinking of doing?

Unknown at this stage. I have my team sharpening pencils and doing calculations. I may actually have to have some in my grubby little webbed feet before I know, since it may come priced by weight and I'll need to weigh a block before I can figure out how much it costs both to produce and to ship to my doorstep (at least, I hope they don't leave it at the bottom of the hill - it would take me a really long time to schlep 5000 pounds of the stuff up the hill to my garage!).

Taking the sample from 1/16" to 1/8" may allow a better test for elasticity and release of material, but may still be a bit thin to manage the bending/buckling of the material when held while carving, without some form of backing. The 1/16th depth of the sample meant the gouge tip could be felt on the backside of the material while being carved in the hand-held form of carving that I do versus flat on a table.

That being said...this material has good potential and I could see absolutely wanting to try a thicker sample.

Hi everyone

My first personal logbook that I have been using since last January is nearing the end of its life, both from being filled up but also from falling apart. It is one of the hardbound sketch books from Michaels that I picked up cheap.

My question to all of you is what is your favorite type of logbook. I’m looking for specific recommendations on brands. Since I’m hooked on this hobby I am willing to spend more than I did on my initial logbook. I also know many of you make your own but I do not have a book binder so that won’t happen.

Thank you in advance and happy hunting

I like Studio 71. It is not the brand that I like but that it is wire bound. That way it will lay flat. I bought it at Joann's, but they probably have them at other craft stores.
