The Netherlands has some really cool stamps!! I have been flying to Amsterdam for work for several years now and I have a high school friend who lives in Den Haag, so I get there quite often and I always send and receive a bunch of postcards! Whenever I buy stamps there, I am always amazed by the variety of images sometimes so avant guarde!!

You know ... I did find some 35mm canisters when I was rampaging through drawers ... and some extra rubbermaid/tupperware containers ...

Also have a decorative bird house that *could* house a letterbox. If I would ever get motivated to create it. Anyone, anyone?? Priced to sell ... $2. Cheaper than Lock & Locks.

I bought a microfiche reader at a sale 2 years ago for $5. It was an impulse, but I like geeky things. I must get rid of it because all I do is stub my toes on it in the closet.

Tomorrow is the last full day of school for all students! Teachers' last day, next Monday - our 24th anniversary! Holy cow, where has the time gone????

Don't stress too much about it, the envelopes with "easy open" tabs are nice, but not required. The key thing is to use clear tape and make sure the return address and the address are easily read by the postal employees.

My 25¢ about leaving a hand carved stamp, or any stamp at all, as a first finder prize is this: I would never do it because teaching people NOT to take the stamp is one of our more difficult challenges. Why send mixed messages? It's like ~ This stamp is OK to take, but not that one. "But I like that one better." and *poof!* Losing the stamp kills the letterbox.

So, why is this okay for a hitchhiker but not for a first-finder stamp with a note? The note would clearly say what to do with this stamp: Make another box.

Just sign-up and list yours as "a mystery tie-dye or something" and I'll know something is in the works. Get it to us as soon as you figure it out!!!

It's listed! Can I tell you what it is when I figure it out, but then bring it up with me on Thursday 7/7?

It's not late. However, people who do not read this message will wonder what happened to you. Do what makes you happy, but you might want to mull it over.

Sometimes I contemplate changing my trail name.

Googling Koala and Cat in Google Images led me to find that cat photo up there. I have found there are other Koala Cats. When creating my trail name, I wanted something separate from the screen name I've used for about 10 years. It took me a few years to get to that name.

But, but what about this?
3. Two or more stamps in close proximity that are close enough to state borders to cross into two or more states and which you'd expect people to get in a single outing.

List the location from which trailhead you'd expect people to use to find the boxes. Ultimately, the location is where people drive to. The clue is where people walk to from wherever it is they park.

If you require someone to actually get back in the car to drive to a different trailhead for the next box in the series, it shouldn't be listed as a series--that would essentially count as two outings and should be listed as such.

That is super weird.... are you sure the posts are there and published, not just a saved draft?

I also tag my posts so people can search that way also from my sidebar

such as:

Montana, planted
Idaho, attempts

etc--
good luck!

hmmm, If I understand all the older posts, the issue is the amount of space to host the virtuals and the search time drag on the system.

That was the issue for me. It's not really the kind of thing that people creating and solving virtuals are going to worry about, though.

And... while I'm no great fan of virtuals, I don't really understand the logic behind getting rid of them completely. Personally, I wouldn't miss them, but they aren't hurting anything anymore. Not allowing the hosting of images on AQ solved the space problem, and separating them out into their type allowed me to optimize the queries to solve that problem. From a technical standpoint, the virtuals aren't hurting anything right now.

People who aren't interested in them can opt out of them. People who only want to solve virtuals that have hand-carved stamps are able to run searches for hand-carved stamps.

If the whole point in ditching virtuals completely is so I can recreate them from the ground up, that idea doesn't really appeal to me. The current system already works (even if few people actually use it anymore, it does still work), and throwing away all this pretty code to recreate it again from scratch is much more work than I'd care for.

I guess I'm just not seeing any reason to get rid of virtuals. *shrug*

I can still make improvements and tweaks to the existing setup if you think there's something I can do to improve the virtual experience. Speaking of which, I should probably try checking the URLs people use for images to make sure the URL actually points to an image and not an HTML page which a lot of people seem to do. Which shouldn't be a terribly difficult thing for me to do. Or if someone does enter an HTML page, I could have it pull up all images from that page and ask them to select which one they were referring to.

Anyhow, I'm leaning against removing virtuals completely. It just doesn't seem like there's any good reason to do so. *shrug*

I was attempting to register a postcard that I received from China. The ID number written on it in two places is CN-173039. However, that number was not recognized when I entered it, so I put in an unknown ID request to Postcrossing. But while looking at the cards from China that have recently been registered, the ID numbers are in the high 300000s. The card is got quite beat-up during its travels, and that ID number makes me wonder just how long it has been travelling!

TG

P.S. Just did a quite search through the gallery on the website and found this card with an ID number not too far from the one that I received. It was sent in March 2010!! I'm wondering if it's possible that this card has been travelling for over a year?? If it has, I won't be able to register it. :(

For paperwork, try working for the FED GOV.

Way late for this response, but it was the FED GOV. Left them behind though, 5 years in the particular section I was in was WAY too much.

finding/sorting through free nook books

I need help from the Nook-savvy folks! I'm trying to load up my Nook with as many free/low-cost books as I can (as long as they are books I actually want to read!). I've clicked on the "free nook books" link on the B&N site, and am wondering if there is some way to sort them by topic or genre? I finding I'm weeding through pages and pages looking for a few gems. Is there an easier way? I know some have found great classics... is there an easy method for finding the good stuff? Or is there a way to first sort by genre, then price within genre, so the freebies/cheapies come up first? Any other hints you can give me? (I know I can also use the library with OverDrive, but I'm looking for ones I can keep on there indefinitely w/no wait list).
Thanks!

I know blogger has had some tweaky things going on lately...perhaps it's just that (why can't Ryan just be webmaster over every site I frequent??). Also, I love the tagging/label idea, which makes it easier for folks to find what they are looking for. Did you know there was a 'search this blog' gadget to add to your blog, as well? That would probably be useful for your readers, too.

search 0.00 then the name of the genre. for example, 0.00 fantasy, or 0.00 classic.
only free books in those genres will come up, and then you still will have some wading to do.

I like to do all my "buying" with my computer on the website, then turn the wi-fi on on the nook and let it do the downloading.

The tracker is listed as a traditional, and not LTC. On the first page when you make a tracker you want to choose LTC swap. I'm not sure if you can edit the tracker type once it's made, or if you will have to delete and relist it as the type you wanted.

Sounds like fun though, I just might have to join. :)
