(not just 1st) Finder Prizes

I've only ever found a 1st finder prize once - and I treasured it. It was a clear keychain. The planter wrote on it in sharpie: "1st Finder - Congrats!" There are reasons for 1st finder prizes, for sure. And also - the reason for this post -

I'm going to start adding Finder Prizes to my new and older boxes. It's there for whoever wants it. If the first finder doesn't want it/already has it/etc, they can leave it for someone who does want it. I'll label it Finder Prize so it doesn't get mistaken for a geocache.

I've got 'em. They're cute. They'll be launching soon :D

Yes, we did just that. Took our paper receipt to the gate 3 months after we bought it at the discount.

As to ridiculous photo clues - easy solution: Hide those boxes from your search! Poof - no stress in trying for impossible ones. Where are the mental puzzles of yesteryear? You know the ones that actually took skill? (yeah - I know I sound like a cranky old timer, but.....no one got time for wandering the woods for random stuff!) :-)

After far far too long, I've finally had the time and health to crack out the mini zine I started working on last summer and wanted to share! I am still looking for feedback since I'm much more of a hobby artist than I am a graphic designer and trying to nail down the bare essentials has given me more grief than it probably needed to. Perfectionism is the enemy of actually getting things done sometimes haha.

I've uploaded each spread of pages on Imgur and will be sharing the final version as a printable PDF and PNG (and in other formats as requested).

Please let me know what you think! My goal was to design something that can be handed out as a quickstart to noxers, and I tried to add a lot of visuals both for added interest and so any kids who may end up with a copy can still follow along even if they can't read every word yet. I need to survive the remainder of my final semester of university but I'd love to do more of these for other topics as well!

At an event, we bought a handful of 'first finder patches. They were pretty well done. I sprinkled them in boxes we put out. But I don't remember who I bought them from.

I attended a conference in OKC a while back, so this is just a visitor's perspective. Not sure about boxes there, but the American Banjo Museum is terrific. The national monument is definitely worth a visit and will stay with you long afterward. Plenty of good restaurants in town as well, so you'll have lots of choices to suit your tastes.

I used to put stickers in mine but realized that most of them weren't taken by the first finder so I stopped doing it. I feel like it was a waste of my time and resources. It's nice to find someone who enjoys the little trinkets you'd get.

I cut out a bunch of butterflies with my cricut and then wrote on it "First Finder!" with the box name and number. I assumed the person would take it and put it in their book next to the stamp, as a little reminder that they were the first finder of that stamp. But it kind of disappointed me when I'd go back to check on a local box and see it still there with a bunch of people who had logged into the log book. Oh well.

Well, the one we planted for you is still there :) There is a great Frank Lloyd Wright house, Native American museum and Keeper of the Plains, but honestly there has been a flurry of new boxes of late so maybe we oughta think about a visit there :)

Official Announcement of Marjorie Quack’s Passing
Board: Atlas Quest Announcements
Mar 31, 2026 9:47pm
Thread Board
It is with heavy hearts and slightly confused expressions that we announce the passing of our beloved mascot, Marjorie “Marge” Quack. After more than two decades of honking, meddling, and generally disrupting the natural order of things, Marjorie has embarked on her final journey — presumably to a place with unlimited corn and no posted trail rules.

Marjorie’s final moments were as gloriously chaotic as her life. While attempting to demonstrate “proper zipline form” to a group of new letterboxers, she was unexpectedly caught in a freak dust devil, carried across multiple counties, and deposited directly into a synchronized swimming competition.

Though she earned a perfect score for artistic impression, she was ultimately disqualified for “being a chicken,” which witnesses say she took very personally.

We ask the community to take a moment of silence — or a moment of loud, indignant honking — in her honor. You may also sign her tributes page and share your own memories of her.

Further details about her memorial service will be shared shortly.

I don’t know about boxes, but Tulsa has the Gilcrease and Philbrook museums plus lots of gorgeous art deco architecture. I did a driving tour once.

If you like the Pioneer Woman cooking shows, a day trip to Pawhuska is a must. Tulsa overall is in a greener part of the state—where the Arkansas river meets the foothills of the Ozarks. OKC is in the flatter, dryer part.

In Loving Memory of Marjorie, Queen of Chaos, Honker of Hearts

🎉 WE’RE HIRING A NEW MASCOT! 🎉

Do YOU have what it takes to carry the torch (and maybe a snack pouch)?

About the Role

Atlas Quest seeks a new mascot to step into the… well… enormous metaphorical shoes left behind by the late, great Marjorie. She was bold. She was loud. She once chased a stamp thief across three ecosystems and a parking lot. We miss her dearly — but the trails must go on.

We’re looking for someone who can honor her legacy while bringing their own brand of delightful nonsense to the community.

Responsibilities

  • Radiate pure chaotic joy
  • Strike heroic poses in unpredictable weather
  • Deliver high‑quality honks, quacks, squeaks, or other mascot‑appropriate noises
  • Pose majestically for photos, even when startled
  • Maintain trail morale through interpretive dance, dramatic entrances, or snack distribution
  • Protect stamp boxes from raccoons, pranksters, and suspiciously moose‑shaped individuals
  • Attend community events, parades, and the occasional courtroom appearance
  • Demonstrate unwavering enthusiasm, even when feathers, fur, or antlers are askew
  • Make children laugh, adults smile, and squirrels reconsider their life choices
  • Embody the spirit of adventure, mischief, and community that Marjorie championed
  • Be prepared to be loved, adored, and occasionally mistaken for a very large duck

Qualifications

  • Must be able to withstand light teasing from squirrels
  • Ability to run, waddle, strut, or glide preferred
  • Experience in mascotting, mischief, or mild chaos a plus
  • Must not be currently under investigation for stamp tampering
  • Ability to honk with emotional nuance strongly encouraged

Preferred Traits

  • Big heart
  • Big energy
  • Big commitment to the bit
  • Big shoes (optional but symbolic)

Compensation

  • Unlimited trail mix
  • Occasional applause
  • A lifetime supply of community affection
  • One (1) commemorative feather from Marjorie’s honorary cape
  • The chance to become a legend whispered about by hikers for generations

How to Apply

Submit your résumé with your qualifications, skills, experience, and at least two credible references.
