My daughter who is 8 just told me she is sick of "doing all this letterboxing".

Well, it's too bad! Cause I'm like you: I can't stop letterboxing!! (I'm a kid at heart...)

I have a daughter who is 9 and everytime I pick her up from school (which is everyday) "Can we go do a letter box?" is always the first thing out of her mouth.

My kids (7 & 9) always grown when I say we're going to do one, but once we're there, they usually get into it, unless they're in a bad mood, and then it's just a woooonnnderful experience *rolling eyes*

If you like it, keep at it!

So, it's not just you!

mine is the same way. age 10. she used to be soooo into LBing, but has lost interest. if i just MUST go hunt down a box and she MUST go with me, it works better for us to take a friend of hers with us. if there is no one available, we bargain --- she'll go boxing with me if I'll take her antiquing along the way. ha!

you guys seen that new burger king commercial yet? the kid is playing the video game and the parents come and ask if they can go to BK? the kid says no or something, the parents throw a big whiney fit, "you totally said we could get a whopper!" (off topic, i know, but this conversation triggered the thought of that commercial. i love it!) :)

My 7 year old is great if we take a friend along but the four year old...ugh! He's just rotten, start to finish. At first candy worked as a bribe but that doesn't even tempt him anymore. I actually started this hobby largely because he can be a bit lazy and I wanted to get him to be more active. Do any of you have suggestions fo this age that might help? You know, besides "let him grow up for 6 more years".

My three (soon to be 4, 5, and 6 1/2) SAY they love letterboxing...but at times it's a different story. Today my youngest was beside himself with crankiness and I was about to make him walk home by himself. (Not really...but I was tempted!)
They have to take turns finding the letterbox. I try to keep them as involved as possible. Giving them one clue at a time. "We're looking for a large rock that looks like a turtle...can you help mama look for it?" My oldest son is over zealous and looks in every crevice...behind every tree...until you tell him we still need to hike a mile or so before we start looking! And then there's my daughter...who is either 200 feet behind me or 200 feet ahead. Something about walking NEAR me...in my sight...just doesn't jive with her. *sigh*
I haven't figured it all out yet either...maybe by summertime......

Oh my gosh, I busted out laughing at that commercial!!!
Surely the writer must have been listening in on my kids...
In fact, I was telling friends about it today at our Thanksgiving dinner.

My four year old likes playgrounds so, we try to plan around something for him. We have also found that the playground works better first because then he is perfectly content to go letterboxing. I think it may be that the waiting is just too much for him. He is a miserable beast if we do it the other way around. Mostly though it is just hit or miss. We have had some amazing trips where he climbed a mountain 3+ miles with no complaints. Other times we couldn't manage a small park.

Ho hum they are so much easier as babies. Throw them in a backpack and carry them anywhere and they are just happy to watch the trees.

I'm like you as well.

My son is a young teen as well and I was wondering if he would fall into the "leave the 'kids' at home" category for gatherings. He's noticed that a great deal of talk on these boards is to adults. That seems kind of strang to us since most of the letterboxers we know are kids and teens. Just thought I'd throw that in there for anyone who wanted to comment. =)

I have a teen (who would rather stay home with *sour puss about boxing...thinks it is dumb* dad right now than LB with mom and 3 younger sibs!). I really think he does enjoy it, but after dad said his peace (piece?) about thinking it was dumb, wants to stay home. I think this is a great hobby that can follow with you for all your life, travels and momentous occassions (how about a wedding LB?). It is a great get off the couch activity and exposes you to all types of folks and way cool art and creativity.

Maybe a board on which the teens/tweens could chat specifically about LB would be welcomed!

just a thought!

I second that motion! I have a daughter (who will be 15 tomorrow) who only likes to box when we are visiting cemeteries (she likes them as much as I do). I think if she could connect with other teen boxers, it would help her get into it more.

A board for teens/tweens I also agree would be great. We have 5 boys from ages 21 months through 13 years old. My 13 year old has hit the teens full force (cranky,emotional,anti-parent...ya know all the good stuff that comes with being a teen) so a place where he could chat with others who are "forced" to go letter box with their parents (but secretly like it- but would never admit to having fun with the folks) would be a great idea.

Do you mean start a board called 'Teen Boxing'???
How about start a carving contest for the teens?
Cool art? Or some other method of engaging them in a meaningful way.
Parents of teens. Any other suggestions??

But yes, I do agree having another board for teens would be a good idea??I think???

Now how do we flag this for Ryan to read and consider, seeing as, as far as I know, he does not have kids, so would not have any real reason to peruse this particular board??
hmmm, bet he's reading this now.

A good point is made here. I was totally oblivious to this thread about having a teen board until someone brought it to my attention, and now there is one. *nodding*

I loved the ladybug story too. =)
