true dat.

Dartmoor Dreamer was kind enough to plant a small series in my local cemetery for me, one surgery or two ago. None in lamp skirts, but all rather wee, and all 3 steps from a vehicle. Never have I been so grateful to get out of the house!

Other pitying Minnesotans have done magnetic boxes for me to find while all crippled up.

Hey! here's an idea, how should we best do drive-bys for wanna be hikers that are on crutches for the time being? (besides when they hide them in my house during recovery)

But what if the planter is disabled but still wants to be a part of letterboxing? Or what if the planter is hiding these boxes for someone disabled and not able to hike trails? As Maude suggested, if you are not interested in parking lot boxes, you have a choice to exclude those from your list just as I would exclude the boxes that would require me to hike up the side of a mountain.

However, this is an urban setting so a lamp post skirt is my only option.

Depending on the urban location there may be lots of other options. Finding those other possible options is creative.

I hid a packet hide (covered in white tape) behind this TOW-AWAY sign for those in wheelchairs. You could drive right up to it and not even get out of the car, just reach out of the driver side window.

I agree.

I've seen urban parking lots with bushes. I can do things with bushes, even small deciduous ones. Once of my recent finds was in a deciduous bush, but it was a large one.

However, this parking lot (that I'm considering) has islands with rocks. I could do a pouch, but we know what people think of those. The other option is a really tiny one without a log book. The stamp I've got planned is going to be about 1½" diameter so it would be really difficult to hide properly in the rocks, and someone won't do it properly. A lamp post skirt is more reliable.

Nevertheless, I will continue to evaluate. I'm still at least 6 months from getting enough time to carve it.

There must be some middle ground between a parking lot and a mountain. I have nothing against an occasional light pole, I was just saying that everything I was finding on my trip planner search from the highway were light poles and I was in need of something a bit prettier. There must be some middle ground.

Fake rock?

These are small rocks. One large enough to hide a letterbox (with stamp and log) would look out of place. I'm still trying to find a way to do it.

I did get a light pole stamp while I was on my trip that had a really cute clue that didn't actually say "go to the light pole". It was written more creatively--something like 'she was dressed in a lighted skirt'. That was a little different.

I just want to throw my two cents in. As a traveler, I appreciate the the light skirt boxes. While they are usually not a destination box, I like to be able to pull off the highway and grab one quick, much like a restvarea box. Hopefully it is nice artwork, because I would skip a store bought. I try to park my car in such a way to block people from seeing what I’m doing. I can think of only one light skirt plant of my own, it’s an adopt a greyhound stamp I left at a greyhound track in Alabama, where I parked overnight on my way through Alabama.

And as most things in this country, you don’t like em, don’t look for em.
Stay inky friends

I can understand Topcollector's frustration if she is trying to plan a trip and can only seem to find parking lot boxes in a particular town.

you don’t like em, don’t look for em.

First sensible comment in this thread -- the never ending "no box is better than a box I don't like or is not maintained" assertion; amazing how many different clothes that assertion can be dressed in -- would that the thread indeed be about pirates :) ...

... but missed Talk Like a Pirate day (9/19) by a day or so. Next time call the thread "Aaarrr!", and post on 9/19 :) Can we get a Talk Like a Pirate Day theme? Do we have such a theme? I don't know, maybe. That's how clueless I am.

It would be nice to respond to the "your opinion doesn't matter" comment, but, given the source, their opinion doesn't matter, so I won't.

I will say this tho -- lets say I plant 2 separate stamps in a light skirt (assuming that is possible, and it may not be, cuz who the bleep knows what light skirt even is, but I'll bet it is possible, maybe on opposite ends of it or something), and I write 2 separate clues for each one, and I list them separately, cuz maybe they are differently themed, or one clue is written in the Bigarren dialect of Euskara. Its possible after all.

What happens? Does the universe or the finders or the admins implode cuz they don't know how to count the PFX? I hope not, but it seems possible. Does the one who says "your opinion doesn't matter" have an epiphany? I hope so, but it seems impossible.

Sounds like a plan. We'll see :)

I saw just such a theme when I logged in a couple days ago, so the answer is yes, you just missed it.

It shouldn't really matter what you're wearing . . .but make sure the blouse matches.

You take the time to hand-craft a pun. It's a good pun; it ties the disparate parts of a post together with a clever linguistic twist. You're proud of your pun -- it's smart and erudite and yet still has that punny je ne sais quoi that one strives for in a bon mot. You post your quip, content in the knowledge of a jest well-played.

And then some... some... some dufus... comes along, with a blatant, plebian, ham-fisted joke, lacking in subtlety or finesse ... and it's just too darn funny!! Sigh... I concede this one, Mr. Dingus. But next time... and there WILL be a next time...

So I guess you are always free to not find boxes planted under light skirts if it bothers you that much. May I suggest a recent plant at Kickapoo. It is recommended that you use a kayak to get to this box!

I don't think all that is necessary. And it may be that she can't "pick" a town. It may be she is going someplace for a reason and just wants to box. I was simply trying to be a little understanding about her frustration.

I checked out the place again a few days ago. The islands are filled mostly with bark mulch. Some of the others have gravel. these kinds would require a pouch.

However, there is one, right next to the place where I want to plant the stamp, that is filled with river rocks. These are larger, rounder rocks. I could hide a small letterbox there. I'm glad that I was prodded to look again.

There is also fake cement hidey boxes. It looks just like left over cement from a jobsite. Ya take a piece of tupperware, turn it upside down, mask off the lip that holds the lid on, pour qwickete (fast bag of cement kinda stuff) over it. Dry, take off masking, put lid on. Viola. Ya can also put twigs/stones mud on it to make it really look like construction waste.

deniserows
but not in cement boots

One of our local boxers here in Florida does that, she mixes in coquina with the cement. They are awesome hides and totally blend in with the added bonus of not floating away during a torrential thunderstorm...
