Found a box today that a tree had developed a lovin embrace with and just wouldn't let it go. Oh the love of a tree for a box. ~Sigh~

I've had to cut a box out of a tree twice. Fortunately, both were decent hiding spots so nobody saw me hacking away at a tree. I didn't do enough damage to hurt the tree, but I'm sure it wouldn't have been popular with the land manager.

In both cases, I knew in advance it was going to be difficult to retrieve the box, so I came prepared. Brought a couple of tools for enlarging the opening a little bit.

A couple of other times, I've hidden a box in a hole in a tree that was only a few inches in only to come back and find the box a couple of FEET in, totally out of reach with the human arm and requiring a grabber or something to retrieve.

We went for a box once that the LARGE tree ended up falling on it (it was tucked into the roots of the tree). Of course, there we are in the middle of January in Maine on our hands and knees trying to pry it from it's hiding spot, shoveling out snow etc...... Nope. It was stuck solid. Even tried to pry open the lid and save the stamp. Nope.

From what I hear, the stamp was rescued in the warmer weather, and replanted. The box itself I believe is still under the tree.

I found a local box that was well hidden in the root system of a cluster of birch trees in the middle of a preserve. Months later, I went back to re-find that box with another boxer who had difficulty finding it. To my horror, that entire section of the preserve burned completely to the ground, EVERYTHING gone, EXCEPT for the letterbox! It was still there, unharmed, not even a little bit melted, still in the loving and protective embrace of the root system of those birches!
