I’m new to Texas just got here a day after Christmas. Looking to find some letterboxes in East Texas. I’m currently located in Shelbyville. I tried looking for two boxes and had no such luck. But I’ll just expand my search and if that doesn’t help I’ll be planting a few of my own. With this weather I hope to go letternoxing a lot. Big difference from New York lol

Welcome to Texas! I'm three and a half hours NW of you, up here north of DFW. That puts you a bit out of my range for planting, but I have planted quite a few new boxes north of you (still looking at 2hr drive, though).

We moved here from east TN in 2013. I have since broadened my idea of what boxes are "close". I drive much further in TX to letterbox, but that's also because everything is new and I want to see what's out there.

Texas has a number of letterboxers who drive all over the state planting interesting boxes that are relevant to their location. I love how much care is given to honoring these locations and history. It's just that Texas is BIG and it takes a long time to get to them all. But if you plant new boxes in your area, I *will* eventually come find them. ;-)

Welcome to Texas! Glad you have joined us here.

I do a lot of planting in the Austin area, which is within shooting distance of a long day trip for you, possibly. Quiet Place is quite right - Texas is BIG, so finding can involve a fair amount of driving from place to place. Finding (and planting) is most fun in the cooler months, whereas summers are good for carving in an A/C indoor space. :)

There is a great group of Texas boxers you should meet. Best way to do that it to attend the next Texas Annual Letterboxing Event (TALE 15) in March - check the events listings for it. It will be held in my neck of the woods (Bastrop State Park) and it'd be great to meet you if you come! There is also generally a fall event, although this year it will likely not happen because we Texans are hosting Live & Breathe XX in October. If you want to volunteer to help with planning, AQ mail Open Space. She's the master organizer and herder of volunteers. Even if you don't have time or interest in volunteering, you should plan to attend if you can. It will be one of the biggest letterboxing events ever!

Watch out for catcus, feral hogs and rattlers, and enjoy your new home!

Hello Lady Muffy, and welcome to Texas!
I'm sorry you have not been successful finding boxes, but that is an area where boxes were planted, and not a lot of visitors or maintenance done on the boxes. It's a long drive for most of the planters, and no active boxers in the area to check on them.
This box, https://www.atlasquest.com/boxes/clue/?boxId=85245 is about five miles west of San Augustine and so worth the drive if you are able to drive over there. It's in a cemetery, so the odds are it is still there. Not sure about the status of the boxes in Nacogdoches, but I am pretty sure my Tres Cruces box is still there, but not found for quite a while.
I hope to see you at a gathering in the near future, and we are all here to help if you have any questions.
