Netflix's "Bright" with Will Smith

This was another movie heavily advertised by Netflix that did not necessarily catch my attention but the husband's. He wanted to watch it and I told him we would watch last night and then I scheduled something else, so he brought it up today.

But between the time we had the initial discussion and today, I had seen on Facebook that it was considered the worst movie of 2017 and they were plans to make a sequel.

And we all know, Facebook is source of great information . . .

But still I hesitated. Then I got my snacks and my ipad and sat down.

Set in a alternative universe, the Earth is full of fairies, elves, Orcs and humans. But gang-laden LA is still gang-laden LA, regardless.

There is a lot of information given almost immediately and you already get the impression they are setting you up for a sequel. But also, there is a lot of information that you just have accept . . . Wars fighting the Armies of the Ninth something. Magic is real but beaten. Someone's grandpa stood on the battlefield of that final battle against evil.

Like I said, a lot of info provided in a short amount of time. Especially the hatred of humans against the Orcs.

As it turns out, Will Smith plays Officer Daryl Ward who is teamed with the first ever Orc Officer Nick Jakoby, and the whole world is watching to see if this is a good idea.

The movie opens them taking a lunch break and Officer Ward, not paying attention and on his cellphone, gets shot point blank by an Orc thug.

Now Officer Ward is a bit of complex man. He tells his daughter that "all the races are all living together just trying to get by" but openly hates his Orc partner because he's an Orc. So, not consistent. But it's cool. Who isn't complicated?

Officer Jakoby also has his set of problems. First, he's under investigation for not apprehending the Orc who shot his partner. He is also considered a traitor by the Orc people and the humans, even his fellow officers, let their disliking of him show. So, he's knee deep in poop and hatred.

And then on Officer Ward's first day back, they arrest a man who tells Officer Jakoby the truth about Officer Ward and Jakoby just sits on the info. Now this information is very revealing and you kinda already figure out how it ends.

However, despite it's alternative universe with fairies, elves, magic background, this movie takes a shocking turn that resonates in our human culture, even without the mythical creatures. Greed, injustice and betrayal.

I am not going to lie. For one, brief moment, I thought "oh, no . . ." and I won't say anything further.

Needless to say, it was at this point I ran out snacks and put the ipad down.

Refusing to say anything more, on to the Kitty Paws Ratings:

One Kitty Paw because Will Smith does a great job.
One Kitty Paw because the movie is actually a good movie.
One Kitty Paw because zingers that come out of Will Smith were great!
One Kitty Paw because it does have a very good message.

And while I won't take a Kitty Paw away, I just want to say, I really hate Police VS Gang movies. This is NOT exactly that but . . . I really hate the way Mexicans always seem to be the gang members. I am a Mexican and I am not a gang member. I am a college-educated, home-owning, short in height-voter who believes in justice and equality for all.

Not usually the type of movie I would watch. I hesitated too after seeing the critical reviews, but I was pleasantly surprised!
