they also have them very prevalently in turkey. it's called an evil eye, but it is a good magic charm to ward off the evil eye when/if a witch tries to cast a hex on you.

Many cultures have an eye symbol that wards off evil. Within Jewish culture, there's the hamsa... a hand with an eye in the palm. It protects and wards off evil.
While in Turkey, someone explained to me that the protective eye is always open and watching for the 'evil eye', ready to ward it off.

It just seemed odd that someone would re-hide the contents so well, while stealing the box.

This to me means that is most definitely was NOT a letterboxer. At least i like to think that in my heart.
But it was someone who knew it was wrong and felt guilty about their crime of stealing the pelican box or they wouldn't have put the contents back.
May that specific pelican box forever leak on them *pattoi* evil eye curse.

i loved that box. So clever.

Talking In Movie Theaters UGH!

Ok, I'm more than a little ticked off at how some people behave in movie theaters these days. The thing that really irks me the most is noisy children and toddlers and the parents who seem to think it's perfectly fine for their child to make constant noise in a movie theater as if it is not totally distracting and rude to the other patrons. My most recent experience with this problem was last night. Sharkboy and I wanted to see Alice In Wonderland in 3D, so I plunked down the $25 to see it (which is a rare treat for us these day's) and we made our way into a very crowded theater. I quickly scanned the people for the adult/child ratio and was pleasantly suprised to see there were not very many kids in the theater and I did not spot a single child under the age of five. Encouraged by this, we decided to stay and found seats. The movie started and everything was great. Of course there was a little bit of noise as the theater was packed; but, the noise was mostly confined to laughing at appropriate parts of the flick. Then....about forty minutes into the movie I heard the unmistakable noisemaking of a toddler about two rows behind me and twenty five seats away. Shocking isin't it? A toddler that can only be quiet for forty minutes at a time?!?! As the movie progressed, the noise making continued on, getting louder and more often. By the time the movie was three quarters of the way through, it was almost non-stop. For most of the movie I had been trying to stay focused on the screen, missed a few lines because I could not hear them over the toddler so many seats away (which makes me wonder why somebody closer did not give them the evil eye or say something to them) and debated going to find a manager. Now, I'm not a big fan of the find the manager option because I paid good money to see a movie, so why should I have to miss some of it in order to have the noise makers silenced? Eventually, I decided since I couldn's see them directly because they were so far away, I had three choices. I could leave and find a manager, climb over about twenty people to get out of my aisle and go in search of the offenders to tell them quietly to shut the hell up or make a quick yell up in their direction to let them know they were being rude. I chose option three. I had had enough. I turned my head around and loudly yelled "Could you shut that kid up?!?!" It got quit back there, then I heard the unmistakable noise again. A few minutes later I heard a cry and saw a man carrying a child around the age of one out of the theater and it was quiet from that point on.

So how do you handle this? Is it better to get the manager? If you have to miss some of the movie, will they give you tickets for another showing?

well, if clicking on it in the correct rhythm doesn't help you, and you've already found the glossare entry under "g" that might shed a little light on things, you might try clicking on the "about theme" link that is in the top right of many themes. I have read that page and gained great understanding from it. there's also google and wicked-pedia...look for the evil eye...

How to get your kids more excited about boxing....

I just wanted to share an idea that we started doing and now my two boys (7 and 10) are WAY MORE excited about boxing than they used to be. It kinda just started by chance...one day we were in a cemetery and they were returning a box and started acting like ninja spies--sneaking behind tombstones, doing special moves and rolls in the grass so a few people in the cemetery wouldn't see them returning a box. It was too funny! Soooo I just went with it! I dug out the walkie talkies they got for Christmas and hadn't used much. They each came up with special agent names (agent x and agent red eye) and I am Commander Hawkeye (their eyes in the sky so to speak). People who box with us have also chosen agent names too. LOL! We came up with secret codes and spy lingo to use while hunting for boxes. For example: Chameleon Mode (blend in--don't look suspicious), Camo Mode (get out of sight and hide), egg (the box), the nest (the hiding spot), noxers (none boxers as you know) and muggles (the evil spies). When we get to the starting location of the box, I send them out a little ahead of me with a walkie talkie and give them the special instructions to find the box while using as much spy lingo as I can. (I make sure the area is safe first and the boxes are rehiden well in their correct locations.) They absolutely LOVE it! They have added some special equiptment like binoculars, a small back pack to put the box in when they find it, spy goggles with special lights, spy watch, etc. Just thought maybe some of you could benefit from this idea. I know all kids are different, but their cousin loved doing boxing like this too and is now hooked!

So do any of you have any other ideas you would like to share?

The theme is Friday the 13th, so I'm assuming it's some kind of evil eye thing, like the black cat, ladder, and spilled salt.

Actually, I guess it's more a superstitions theme than a Friday the 13th one, but you get the point. :)

What is that blue-eyeball that swinging gently in the top right hand corner of every page?

It's a nazar. Which kind of amuses--I actually didn't know that--when I was in Turkey, I saw it everywhere and everyone always just called it the "evil eye." I thought that actually was the official name, but I ended up finding a link to "nazar," and I guess that's what it's really called.

Anyhow, it's supposed to ward off evil. =)

Maybe the color blue is just for good luck, or as is the case in above link, to mean happiness. No wonder to most women its they're favorite color...
I wouldn't call that eye the eye of evil, anything with the color blue is good for me....my favorite color. ;-)

I traveled to Greece not that long ago, and it's also a VERY popular symbol there, as well as in Turkey. In Greece, it is called "The Eye", and it's purpose is to ward off the "evil eye" and bring good luck to those who wear it or hang it in their homes. It was nice to see a familiar symbol on AQ yesterday, especially because I had such a personal tie to it now. Hope this helps!

Yes, those corner graphics won't show up on mobile devices unless you explicitly set your browser to use the desktop version. "Decorative" stuff like that is suppressed for the smaller screens and smaller bandwidth that they often have.

I recently checked out this series on ACORN British TV, through my ROKU. It shows a picture of a rather stringy man carrying around a baby.

The show's creator Mackenzie Crook is best known being the thin pirate who's eye was constantly popping out in The Pirates of the Carribean.... yeah, that guy! He plays Andy, a simple man who is not exactly sure what he wants in life.

As his metal detectorist (NOT metal detector) companion is Toby Jones, best known to me as the little troll who tried to help Angelica Huston get her spoiled daughter a princess crown in Drew Berrymore's Ever After. He plays Lance, a man who is stuck in the past but is quite attentive to the fine details.

This show surrounds these two gentlemen and their quiet lives in a quiet English town. But there are some quirky characters and great zingers (especially against the evil Simon and Garfunkal duo) in play.

Beyond Andy and Lance, I like Russell and Shelia. (Loved the scene where Andy and Lance convinces everyone into drinking Shelia's lemonade!)

This show is not slap stick nor do I believe it's "British humor only" .... The key to this show are the characters, their development, the witty interactions between everyone.... and the treasure hunt, but don't tell them that! (They are not treasure hunters!)

Anyways, if you check it out, please let me know!

I bailed on this one. They had furniture barricading each entrance to the area that was roped off and were giving me the evil eye. Plus minion #2 was with me and was threatening mutiny if I embarrassed him. Since we had many more hours together at the Fair, I caved.

That's easy. From "The Balance" by the Moody Blues:

"And he thought of those he angered,
for he was not a violent man.
And he thought of those he hurt,
for he was not a cruel man.
And he thought of those he frightened,
for he was not an evil man.
And he understood. He understood himself.
He saw that when he was of anger, or knew hurt, or felt fear,
it was because he was not understanding.
And he learned compassion.
And with his eye of compassion,
he saw his enemies, like unto himself,
and he learned love."
