I live in a winter wonderland and hibernate. I did a lot of practice carving this past winter and thought about first finder prizes. I wanted something to do however, so I went searching the craft section. In the end I found suncatchers that you "paint" with this stuff, I'm sure someone will know what I'm talking about. In between carving I painted on those and that's what I'm using for ff prizes. They may not have anything to do with the box or location, but I know people like them so whatever.

Quote I'll tell you what Letterboxing Mecca is.

It's when you go to a location, and whether you find the box or not, you look around at one moment and think to yourself, "My God, this is one of the most beautiful/amazing places I have ever seen, and I never would have seen it if I hadn't been looking for the box."

Oh Jaxx. I couldn't agree with you more. Thanks to Funhog, I went to a beautiful little park not too far from where I live. Never knew it was there until I went for her box.

I notice you live in NY. I need to visit one day and see all the wonderful LB sites there. If you're ever going to visit Oregon, let me know. It is simply a beautiful state with a variety of terrains. I'd love to have you see it!

I've barely scratched the surface on my Island here, much less the rest of the state, but since I travel for business, I've been lucky to see some other wonderful parts of the country.

You'd like NY...from the Island to the Falls, it is varied and wonderful, as I'm sure your state is, too.

This is a tangent of sorts, but your subject made me want to reply. A new animated movie will be coming out soon called "Barnyard". Personally, it doesn't look like it's going to be that great. The premise is that the farm animals are all really intelligent beings and that they just act dumb for the sake of humans. When the humans aren't around they act very.....human! Anyway, I've seen a million ads and previews for it since I have children in that target audience, and today I finally saw one that made me laugh.

A cow is jumping off a diving board and yells "Man a bunga!!!" Now, THAT is funny to me.

Ahh, there is nothing like winter boxing. Way better than summer boxing. Give me 30 degrees with no snow or ice and I'll take it. Five minutes after you hit the trail and it feels like 60.

Same here in the True North (Canada). Hot, humid, wet and buggy! We went to Picton ON today to find some boxes and had to do some wine & cider tasting instead. Almost as much fun! I did find a good supply of my favourite big white erasers for carving. Bought all of them at a buck a piece. Nineteen! Woohoo!

I am starting to see why Warrior Woman quits boxing for the summer and just heads to the beach.

I enjoy the fall best of all..or those gentle spring rainy days.

Question about exchanges/finds!

Just a question... if you receive another Letterboxers stamp as a first finders prize, and its another person OTHER than the person who planted the box, is it an exchange? A find? Or, just really superb art? LOL

Doesnt matter - Im enjoying the heck out of my collection, but was wondering how that worked!

Did you find an actual stamp? Or the image of the stamp?
And why would someone other than the planter leave a firstfinder?

Technically an exchange is from the meeting of a fellow boxer on the trail or at an event, and trading stamp images.

We were FF on a VERY nice new series in IL - Trip Across America - and the FF Prize is postcards from the different states each box was based on - all stamped by the person who sent them to the planter as a FF prize for the finder- which IMO was AWESOME!!!!

We LOVE them, and aren't too concerned about count #'s etc... but were curious if they should be logged as anything. (And as a note, to their contributers - we would be happy to 'exchange' if thats allowed per etiquitte!)

Just curious!!!

This weather is perfect for planting/ searching some indoor boxes. Nothing like boxing in the good ole' air conditioning. :) My mall boxes are getting alot of hits this time of the year. Also good for rainy weather :) (shameless plug for more indoor boxes ;) !)

Indoor is good at this time of year. I'm having to wait for them to come to me in the mail box. ;) Postals are also nice when it is too hot to hike-- and so are virtuals (I've noticed an increase it people finding my virtuals lately).

I have a couple stacked up waiting to be planted too-- I'm even less motivated to plant in this heat!

Um Yep it is.....I just couldn't handle going outside yesterday, it was 101 here in Denver..so today, well it's a weekend and I just HAD to get out there..

Went out of town to plant a box. Everything took like 5 times longer than it should have all day and not just because I don't know the area so well.

I was tripping all over myself down the trail between heat and hunger at the end of the day...I'd brought PLENTY of water with me, fortunately!

Stopped to get a sandwich before heading home....I drop an entire large lemonade all over the floor of the restaurant. I felt SO bad, but the guy wouldn't let me help clean up...

OK so I go outside, back into the heat to a nearby park to eat....with an all new lemonade.

Almost leave the danged thing on the roof of my car...sheeze, I'm completely fried, even after eating...and I'd been dreaming about a large lemonade ALL the way back down the trail....

Drive 2 miles down the road and look in my rear view mirror and....

The entire contents of my wallet (I quickly figure out) have just flown off the roof of my car....at 50+ mph! How the thing stayed on top that long, at that speed, I'll never know!

Great! (NOT!) I'm out of town and already of the verge of completely losing it...oh yeah and I need gas!

Thankfully two angels had stopped and retrieved all the important bits by the time I could turn around. I spent the next 10-15 minutes "playing in traffic" to retrieve the rest.....People honking at me, etc.

It was all I could do to keep it together enough not to get run over.....

Day over!

And you know life is funny sometimes....the very next song on the radio was John Denver's Rocky Mountain Hiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh, Colorado as I got on the road (for real this time), began to compose myself, and headed home to Denver with the rosy sunset glow of the Rockies to entertain me.

Lesson: Winter boxing with frozen hands just is never gonna seem that bad again...and I ain't boxing outside when it's over 95 EVER again!

Oh yeah and now I have to "pay it forward" to repay my Karma Bank to these kind souls when I get the chance.

Too bad there are only 2 indoor boxes I know of in this area. One of them is my own, and the other I've done already...

Take it easy out there people!

Harpers Ferry NPS

I was reading laments of those that have had letterboxes in Harpers Ferry NPS area confiscated. What a pitty that such a great location is not available to boxers.

Harpers Ferry NPS has virtually ruined Harpers Ferry for locals. You have to go to the visitors center, pay a fee and ride a bus to the center. Originally you parked right next to the historic park and paid a basic parking fee. Many locals solved this problem by parking at the train depot. Now on weekends they will not allow free parking there since there aren't any trains running. The NPS has been in a constant fight with the town of Harpers Ferry over many piddly issues. Although it is beautiful and historic locals virtually ignore it. My favorite way to visit now is to bike on the C&O Canal on the Maryland side and walk across the railroad bridge. Sounds cheap but I refuse to pay and ride the bus!

Anyway there is still at least one active box in Harper's Ferry!. There is also a parking lot close by at St. Peter's Church. If coming through Bolivar and upper Harpers Ferry turn right onto Church Street. That works for a brief free parking spot. Just long enough to find a box.

That's what postals are for, to stay inside and box. All you have to do is wait on the post office. The reward - some great stamps!

Now... being the hypocrite I am... off to a dog show early this AM. UGH... Wish us luck!
