Prayers for my mom
Board: Prayer and Healing

My mom fell off the bed this morning and broke her hip. After talking with the Dr. late tonight, because of her age (100 in a month) and little difference in outcome, my sisters have decided not to have them do surgery. Now we'll most like have to find a nursing home for her instead of the Alzheimer facility she has been in. She is so upset--talked for 8 hours straight, ripping out tubes ... and complaining about what we're doing to her. We're all facing a lot of unknowns and very anxious. My daughter and I are the only ones who live in the same city with her and most is going to fall on us.

Prayers for ALL of you. You'll need them as much as your mom. I'm sorry she, and all of you, are going through this.

Such a sad state for a person who has lived an entire century, life is so cruel. Prayers and well wishes for her to live as full a life as possible given the situation, and you and your daughter for the needed strength to daily face the complexities of this situation.

Love, hugs, and prayers for you and your daughter.
Remember that your mother's angry words are not from her; they are from the disease.

I'm so, so sorry for you. My Mom fell out of bed last fall and broker her hip, but she was able to have surgery (she was only (!) 90. However, it was textbook, was almost ready to leave rehab, contracted a terrible pneumonia and ended up in memory care. Most of the decisions and things have fallen to me and now I am in the process of emptying a house of 60 years of living so I can sell it. She was very ill last summer as well, so the years are going by with illnesses and surgeries to mark their passing instead of good memories. I am very, very sorry that you and she are going through this.- storm rider

Thanks. She has slipped off the bed there many times and we knew this was inevitable. She fell so many times when she was living at home that she didn't think anything about it. At least I do have 2 sisters to help with that stuff even though they live out of town. They do come here when they can, they both at least live within 2 hr-drive.

That's very sad, I'm so sorry. I agree at that age, surgery outcome would probably not be beneficial. Hugs and prayers.

It appears that she will be able to return to her original residence. They did a PT evaluation today and decided she will qualify for a 1-person transfer (probably because she only weighs about 85 lb.) and Medicare will pay for a PT person to go there and also hospice care. When we left her last night she was in very good spirits--almost her old self--but that changes minute by minute. If we're in the room with her she whines that she can't get her arm up to feed herself, but if we walk out and peek in, she does just fine and eats every last bite. Sly like a fox at 100. Amazing. She's always been a clean freak. She was complaining that there was black dirt in her bed--oh, it was her brownie crumbs.

SCRATCH THAT--Now they say they won't take her back, so we're down to a choice between 2 places.

Thanks for your thoughts and prayers.

Oh I'm so sorry. It is so hard to plan. I'm curious, is the hip painful? I have heard of the no surgery choice before and it baffled me a bit. Is it that she cannot support herself on it or is it painful if she even just shifts in bed?

I'm working during the day, so won't see her 'til tonight. Yesterday they had her sitting up in a lounge chair with her legs up and she wasn't complaining. When she was in bed a couple days ago and they would change the sheets or move her she would cry in pain. She's just so tiny that she kind of slides down and can't pull herself up. And she has scoliosis so bad that it's hard for her to lay on her back. We're supposed to find out today where she will be moved to but my sisters haven't called yet. Amazing out a 100-yr-old person can still try and lay guilt. Last night when I started to leave after she ate supper (which she tried to get me to eat) she said--"oh, you'll probably leave now and I'll need something." The nurses all think she's funny. I never heard her say a cuss word my entire life and my sisters were asking my daughter if she ever thought she'd hear her grandma cussing like a sailor. Apparently that happened a couple days ago during the day. But only in front of us--she's as nice as pie to everyone else and knows how to put on happy face.

She's being moved today to a really nice facility here in town. I hope she likes it better than the last place--but it's not her house, so probably not. She just wants to go home and is still worried about who's paying the bills. She always wants us to take her to the bank so she can get some money. Yeah, right, they can't even keep track of her clothes and glasses.

They got her moved & she says she'll stay there for 1 day :) ha ha.

I thought I give an update. My sister visited today while mom was in physical therapy and they said she is doing really well and doing everything just the way they tell her to. They even had her standing on her good leg and exercising her arms. They've taken her off the Seroquel (for dementia) and she seems quite settled and happy there. They have tablecloths & flowers on the dinner tables and really delicious food served like she is used to [with a salt shaker so she can load up on her sodium]. She even puts salt in her oatmeal--yuk. They said they walked into her room and she had made a friend and was talking with her roommate, something that never happened at the other place. Such a difference. Hope it sticks.

Read this thread and was wondering how your mom is doing now.
I had gone through very similar situation with my mom, she broke her hip at 95, had surgery, and lived 6 more years. We recently lost her at 101 and 1/2.

Hope that things are ok and will be keeping you all in my prayers.

I just read this now and I am so sorry to hear that your Mom passed.
I just lost my Mom also on Oct 30th. I feel for you and hope that you are comforted by all the good memories of her. You have my deepest sympathy.
Sincerely, WW52
