Butter Kut is here, if you want to try something new.

One of my favorite movies is still the Princess Bride, so I thought I would call the latest, very soft, cuts-like-the-old-MasterCarve-blocks material 'Butter Kut'. I will honestly say that I have mixed feelings about this stuff. It's very soft, carves smoothly, but is a bit more fragile than any of the other materials, due to both its softness and its thinner profile. It could be a really good answer for the folks who have trouble with aching hands after working with some of the firmer materials, though.

Heat transfer (at least with the toner cartridge I currently have in my printer) doesn't seem to work very well with this stuff, but pencil and acetone both work very well. Cedar oil did, too, so I think wintergreen oil should work. I don't have an ink jet printer, so I can't say if any of the parchment paper or label paper options would work.

It's a strange size, coming to me in 12.5 inch sheets that don't fit into the flat rate envelopes. I'm cutting some of the pieces in half so that they will fit and, as you know, if you get the big sheets and the shipping calculator gives you a heart-stopping estimate, just ignore it and I will fix it by sending a refund for the overcharge. Also, I made a guess at final price, since I don't have the actual invoice yet and shipping charges are a complete unknown, so this might change a little bit up or down when all the data are in.

Maybe this stuff will help tide us over until the other formulations start feeling like what we want. :)

first a disclaimer: i'm an OZ Kut girl all the way. However. . .

i may have to buy some of this, carve a set of Disney princesses on it, just so i can say, "PRINCESS Butter Kut!!" several times and giggle softly. . .

How does this compare to the pink stuff? Softer?

What exactly do you mean by fragile? Does crumble or is it just soft?

"PRINCESS Butter Kut!!"

That's exactly what I've been calling it all day - I almost put that in the name, but thought it might be a bit much -- especially for people who don't yet know exactly how strange I am. :)

Yes. Definitely softer. A lot more like Master Carve.

I haven't had it crumble at all, but I was carving some letters and all of a sudden realized that I was cutting a little deep for something I hadn't planned to mount, since I thought it might tear with any kind of rough handling. It was a small ribbon of letters, though, so I may be worried for nothing - I was just testing to see what it would do. I have a feeling that if you rubbed marker pens on it a bunch, it might pill off like the old Master Carve used to do, though. Incidentally, this stuff is easy to carve with a hobby knife or a gouge. I'm still useless with the wire knives and needles, so my mileage will not be as good as somebody who has skill with those tools.

Would you be willing to sell small slabs so people can try it out first? I am despereate for something I can carve on since I am out of the good pink! :-D

Since I am not a fan of markers anyway and I am a gouge career, this sounds like something that may work. :)

I have cut some of the sheets in half, so they'll fit into a flat rate envelope. They are 6.25 x 4.875 inches. Is that small enough? :)

Just ordered some. And it occurred to me that I fully expect this to be the pale yellow color of butter mints, and to have that same melty sweetness when I taste it.

Apparently its carvability isn't high on my priority list.

label paper options would work.

That is what I used and it worked well.
It is softer than pink, but has a different good feel to carving than the Master Carve.
