I have to step in and address this.

Kudos on a really great response. "The Paradox of Tolerance" concept seems to be lost on some folks.

Similar to your NOT FOR EVERYONE!!

I just finished Tender is The Flesh by Agustina Bazterrica. In the aftermath of a virulent disease that has caused the collapse of most of the mammal food species, the world has adapted to a form of 'socially acceptable' cannibalism. This is like "What if Jonathan Swift's A Modest Proposal was a manifesto, not pointed satire. It was well thought out by someone who really understood the slaughterhouse business. It was grim, it was relentless, it was skeevy feeling, but it was really interesting and a quick read.

Currently reading: Robotech - The Macross Saga: Battlecry by Jack McKinney. The novelization of the 1980s anime (and roleplaying game!) where a squabbling, fractious Earth is united by the appearance of advanced alien technology, signaling that they are not alone in the universe and need to band to together to defend themselves when those aliens come looking for their lost tech.

Just finished “The Dinner” by Herman Koch - two couples meet for dinner to discuss a horrific crime committed by their teenage sons.

Listening to essays by Jonathan Franzen - “The End of the End of the Earth”.

I started letterboxing very near to Westwood, in Montclair. But I am upstate NY now. If your friend is a hiker, have them look up boxes by Wingfoot, he has quite a few boxes in northern NJ, say from Parsippany and north.

Yes-there are thousands out there! Be sure to read the finders' notes on the box you are searching for aspeople will remark on any landscape changes or their experiences finding the box, etc. Welcome to the hobby, and Happy Trails!😊🎻

Hi all, almost a year ago I registered for this website, saved a bunch of local letterboxes, and then immediately forgot about letterboxing. Lately I've been learning all about linocuts which reminded me of this website. Today should be a nice day once the rain lets up. I'm going to use a blank sketchbook as my logbook and prowl for some easy letterboxes to find. Wish me luck! I'm in Person County, North Carolina, USA.

That sounds like it's up my alley. I love sci-fi fantasy and trauma stories, Stephen King, Richard Laymon (he was an author that wrote some disturbing books, but somehow kept you reading till the end. He does multiple completely different crazy scenarios that finally come together somehow in the last 2 chapters) and the one person I would die to meet or even write to, Torey Hayden. She is my idol!! Ugh, I love her so much as an author, teacher and the very strong person she is ♡

That happens. Sometimes boxes go missing and sometimes they taunt us by being tricky to find. Keep at it and try for some other boxes in the area. The failed attempts make the later finds that much more exciting.

I have returned from my adventure! I found two out of four stamps on my itinerary, which I think is pretty good. :) I have discovered three things:

1.) People don't pay strangers much mind, even if they're flipping stones, scrambling under bushes, and digging through the mulch.
2.) My signature stamp may be too large! It's roughly 1.5 in. x 1.5 in. One of the two letterboxes I found had no logbook, but the second one had a teeny tiny logbook. There was only one stamp in the logbook and it was about the size of a dime. I could have fit my stamp in if i put it sideways, but I didn't want to take up too much space (two pages! >.>). I guess I'll have to bring out my x-acto knife and smallest speedball cutter and see if I can make the world's first subatomic linocut stamp.
3.) There's a lot of treasures hidden away where nobody ever thinks to check!

Anyways, I had a few other stamps on my plan today, but the weather shifted to cold winds and ominous clouds. I took that as a sign to call it a day. There's a walking trail near me with a few letterboxes and I'll check that out next time the weather is nice. I would bring my dog but she seems more interested in donning roadkill perfume than any scavenger hunt. Has anyone considered doing a human-dog letterbox with a stamp AND a pungent critter inside? Just kidding :p

I'll update everyone again once I go to the walking trail. I'll post it in another thread to avoid posting too frequently in the newbie forum. Thanks everyone for being so welcoming to me! I'm very excited to be a part of this community :D

Hey! Welcome and congratulations of your first successful venture out. 2 out of 4 isn’t bad. 🙃

I would say your sig stamp is just fine. What we usually do in a situation like you describe, is just stamp the corner of it. There will be smaller ones and there will be bigger ones. I wouldn’t sweat it.

1.) People don't pay strangers much mind, even if they're flipping stones, scrambling under bushes, and digging through the mulch.

If you are wearing a safety vest and are carrying a clipboard they will pay you even less mind. Just sayin’… 😉

Yup, two out of four is pretty good. I always figure that the first stamp found makes the expedition a success, and anything after that is just gravy :)
