Having boxed the area a fair amount, I do not recognize their name, but then, they are not on AQ so ??
I did email them at the address they provided Ryan, and have heard nothing back.

Most recently, The Martian
How was the book? I own it but haven't read it yet. I liked the movie! Was it at all similar?

The Door in the Floor
We watched that movie. What a twisty movie. We liked it. I'll have to check out the book.
Another one where I thought the movie was better than the book was Fault In Our Stars. It's was great, both book and movie, but I liked the movie better.
Different carving tips?
Board: Stamp Carving and Mounting

Hello. I finally carved my first stamp (I purchased a beginners Speedball kit), and it was okay. Need to do a redo but you know...learning. I found I had a hard time turning some corners and like I needed to have made the designs bigger as a novice. I searched Amazon as my two large chain crafts stores didn't have much option in terms of carving utensils. I found some Speedball tips and I wanted to ask if this was overkill or not. Also, found I had a hard time keeping the depth I cut into consistent for the most part. Newbie struggles?

My son forwarded me an Instagram post about the Florida hunt:
https://www.instagram.com/reel/DUMLeCWj6II/?igsh=NjZiM2M3MzIxNA%3D%3D
This person got there at the beginning of the time slot window and waited in line 2 hours. In the end they took a photo with the idol (on a stand) and one of the Survivor contestants. It’s a shame if you can’t even hold/wear the idol for the picture, but with so many people coming through, that probably wouldn’t be practical.

You were right. We went to Vermont location today, as of 11:30 when we left they had 400 people.
We stood in a line, took our picture in front of a cheesy little set, and had to go inside a building to scan a QR code and register.
So disappointing.

I was where you are back in August, so I’m still a newbie. This is what helped me:
- Get a lighted magnifying glass with at least a 4-inch glass. Mine has a clamp that screws onto my desk.
- Get narrower gouges. You can find them online, or check with users Kirbert and KnottyKnitterDirtMonkey. I purchased .5 and .25 gouges from KKDM. The narrower sizes really have improved my carving.
- Go slow. It’s easy to get to carving faster, then—whoops!—your gouge slides somewhere it shouldn’t.
- Use an X-acto knife (or similar hobby knife) to carve away pink stuff you don’t need.
- Practice a lot. I carved lots of designs using stencils and simple images. Those will never see the light of day lol.
- Watch YouTube videos of stamp carving. They make it look easy, but the more I watch, the more techniques I learned.
- I’m still transferring images by tracing pencil over designs I print, then rubbing the penciled image onto pink stuff. Recently started tracing with a mechanical pencil, and the tip is finer than the ordinary Ticonderoga I was using.
Yes, my depth is inconsistent. Still working on that. 😬
You WILL improve with lots of practice and the right gear. If I can carve decent stamps (with no artistic talent or crafting experience), anyone can. 😊
Inky hugs,
Joy

Restricting 'boxes to an event?
Board: Letterboxing Help Desk

Hi - I think I might have misunderstood this feature, so am checking in:
I listed these letterboxes as restricted to this event, thinking that only those signed up for the event would be able to see the letterboxes temporarily listed for that event. But, it seems that folks not signed up for the event are able to see the listing. What am I missing, please?
Thanks -

Interesting, thanks -
It was one of the carvers in the series who was able to click through, so maybe that's it - they can see their carves?

When doing curves and corners it can be easier to rotate the stamp rather than the carving tool.

Yes, people can always see boxes that they have some sort of credit for: owner, planter, lister and--yes--carvers.
You can't restrict a box from people who participated in it's creation!

How long did you wait, did you get a idol, like a little token or something as a souvenir?

We got at the location 4 minutes before the event started, there was already a line of cars, we were told to come back in 30 minutes, they would let more people in as people left. (We had to let the dogs have a potty break anyway - after 1.5 hour drive). When we got back to the location at 10:30 there was still a line. As a car or 2 left, they let a car or 2 in. We got up to parking by 10:45, had to stand in line, get a picture taken - DID NOT GET AN IDOL TO TAKE HOME.
Just a picture with one hanging off of a log tripod, that I didn’t even see until my husband told me after I came out of the building from scanning the QR code to register.
There were so many missed opportunities! It wasn’t very organized, no real hunt, and you would think they would have had a table for selling merchandise. Not that I would buy anything, but tons of people were there with merch on. We left the location by 11:40.
I talked to a network representative who was in line for the bathroom with me, and when I expressed that as a fan and letterboxer that it was overall disappointing, we expected a real hunt following clues… she said “being that it’s a contest, they had to make it ADHA compliant.” Still could have been. CBS & Survivor needs a Letterboxer to help them with these things! 🤭

Sounds like an ordeal. Once the Boston one hits, maybe I wont go on the first day. Ill wait till near the end, just to check it out.
I have no desire to win the contest, but it would be nice if they gave a little trinket for 'finding the idol'.
i agree, I read some clues from other states and even if I never been to that state, they are pretty easy to find with a google...lol
Its not that hard to write clues and keep it ADHA compliant. I agree, they need a letterboxer to help them. you should of offered, who knows, might be side gig for ya...😉
