my aunt (the lady who taught me to knit) thinks I'm nuts for doing my cables with a dpn.
on the other hand, she thinks I'm nuts for making socks from worsted weight rather than "sock yarn". but the "sock yarn" she uses costs $20-35 per pair...I can't afford that. I am very happily knitting socks on two circular needles, 24 sts per needle (48 per row) in wool ease (worsted weight) yarn. yummy warm socks, and they aren't self-striping, but I put very nice made-up-on-the-spot cable designs in, and no two pair are alike. love them, they're soft, warm, and comfy.
so who cares if I'm nuts or not?

I don't think you're nuts. I like to knit worsted weight socks for hiking and for the winter. My only problem is the acrylic content in Wool-Ease. I'm allergic to acrylic. Weird, I know, but it's true. My worsted weight socks are superwash wool. :-)

I did manage to find this site through google that has a good number of options... I've determined that there are so many beautiful patterns out there for free, that I should never have to pay for one! (Of course, it helps that my DH also likes to give me knitting books for Christmas!)
I hope you find something you like!
