DescrEarlier this week, I was preparing to lead a discussion of Anton Chekhov’s short story, “The Bet.” After identifying the fundamentals of setting, plot, characterization, point of view, etc. (yawn), I was trying to develop a few questions that would stimulate good conversation about the central theme and about the issue that set the action of the story into motion. An online search for notes brought me to the doorstep of a site called “The Hermitary.”

During the discussion of the story, I mentioned my having stumbled upon the site, and the conversation turned briefly to an amusing look at the idea of online communication among hermits. Our thoughts culminated in what we thought would be the ultimate oxymoron: the hermits’ chat room. Once the laughter subsided, I said, “You know, I could actually set that up!”

So here I am. And here you are, if you have continued reading to this point.

I confess, I am not a hermit. ;-) I don’t embrace the concept at all. I am the mother of six children who spends very little time alone. However, I do recognize and feel the need for occasional solitude -- time for reflection, meditation, and planning.

So, why this group? Why this board? The truth is . . . well . . . I set it up because I could, and because the concept amuses me. Please take it lightheartedly, as I do. It will likely exist for only a short time. I really just wanted to be able to say that there exists a chat room for hermits. The idea still makes me laugh. But, while it is here, feel free to enjoy it.

You might want to start by reading Chekhov’s story.
