Description

Come join us for the 2013 BBQ & Boxin' Bash!. The event will be held at the Fell Hunt Camp http://scgreatoutdoors.com/park-fellhuntcamp.html outside Greenwood, South Carolina, in the Sumter National Forest. http://www.secretfalls.com/hiking/265-long-cane-trail. This recreation area is the gateway to some wonderful trails for hiking, biking, horseback riding and boxing. The camp is also very close to Greenwood and Abbeville where boxes are in abundance. You should also expect some nightboxing opportunities.

The Fell Hunt Camp has a picnic shelter with power, charcoal grills, bathrooms (no showers), and sixty primitive campsites that are first come, first served. We have reserved the picnic shelter for Saturday. The ranger has indicated that the camp is never full, but it will still be a good idea to stake out a campsite as early as possible if you plan to spend Friday or Saturday night. It appears that some of the camp sites are big enough for trailers, but there are no RV hookups. Parson's Mountain is about 4 miles away and it has campsites with RV hookups and showers for those who would prefer camping in more comfort. The daily fee for the Fell Hunt Camp is $3 and overnight camping is $5.

As the name suggests, this will be a BBQ themed event. Your hosts will provide smoked pulled pork cooked onsite Friday night and served for lunch on Saturday. We ask that participants provide appropriate sides like slaw, beans, sweet tea, buns, BBQ sauce, dessert, paper products, etc.

DIRECTIONS:

From Greenwood: Take Highway 10 towards Bradley. Just past Promised Land turn right on SC 47 (there is a sign that directs you to Fell Hunt camp). The camp is a short distance ahead on the left.

From Abbeville: Take Highway 28 south towards McCormick. Turn left at the sign directing you to Parson's Mountain. Go past the entrance to Parson's Mountain (it will be on your right). Turn right when you come to a "T" intersection. Continue on that road until you see the Fell Hunt Camp on your right. If you get to Highway 10 you have gone too far.

May 12, 2013: Less than a week
Well, there is less than a week until our BBQ event! We have been busily planning and planting lots of pig-related boxes that have been generously donated by many of you. It is shaping up to be a really fun event, and if the 10 day forecast is to be believed, it will be dry and in the low 80s.

We only have the shelter reserved on Saturday, but it is not reserved by anyone on Friday so we plan to squat there when we arrive Friday. There is a fire ring and a charcoal grill at the shelter so we will plan to build some fires if anyone wants to join us about 7pm Friday night to cook your brats, burger, dogs, etc. We will also will have clues for some night boxes that will keep you entertained Friday evening. There are several picnic tables in the shelter that we plan to supplement with some folding tables; it would be helpful if folks could bring lawn chairs just to make sure we have plenty of seating.

Some of the traditional boxes will be posted ahead of time for those who arrive early. Others will be provided with a map in a packet that will be handed out on Saturday morning.

For those planning to arrive really early in the week, feel free to contact either me or Greycrazy - there are many great boxes in Abbeville and Greenwood and we would be glad to meet for lunch or otherwise give input about those boxes that should not be missed.
