COMING FROM OUT OF TOWN?

For information on accommodations, dining, attractions and current events, visit http://www.explorewaterlooregion.com or http://www.kitchener.ca. You can also call the Welcome Centre ahead of time at 519-741-2200 ext.7130 -- they're open Monday-Friday 8:30AM-4:30PM. And of course, you can always ask Starhexen or Vivian the Viking for our recommendations!

LOOKING FOR A PLACE TO STAY?

FrogQueen says: "We just got an amazing rate for the 4 Points Sheraton ($50 a nite) on Priceline. If anyone needs details, have them contact me."

WHERE THE BOXES ARE

We've planted 4 series of traditional boxes for this event. These series are hidden in 3 different forests, all within a 5 minute drive of one another. Almost all the stamps are meant to be done in bright colours, so if you use black ink it will ruin the effect and everyone else's ink pads...

Boxes are hidden at the following locations -- we'll give you maps at check-in along with the clues booklet:
  • Huron Natural Area -- where you pick up your clues
  • Steckle Woods -- entrance off Bleams Rd at Homer Watson Blvd
  • Strasburg Creek -- entrance off Kilkerran Crescent / Rush Meadow Crescent

Please consider doing the series in Steckle Woods or Strasburg Creek first, instead of at Huron Natural, so there's even spacing between letterboxers. And don't feel like you have to find all of them in one day! Traditional boxes are permanent, so you can always come back (unless they get muggled, that is).

WHAT INKS TO BRING

--> Please bring brightly coloured ink pads for this event!! <--

These stamps were all designed to be in bright colours, and black ink severely messes up bright coloured ink pads. So we ask that you do not use black ink or metallic ink on the trails. Instead, stick to other colours. The one exception is the event stamp which, because of its detail, looks best in black.

OTHER NEARBY LETTERBOXES

There are many other outstanding boxes hidden throughout the city! Here is our short list of boxes you might want to check out while you're here (but there are still many more).

--> NOTE: We won't provide these clues to you at the event, so either print them off beforehand or bring a smartphone.

LUNCH

Huron Natural Area is a great place for a picnic lunch! There's a covered picnic area and a public washroom, whereas there are no facilities whatsoever at Steckle Woods or Strasburg Creek.

Fortunately, there are also several plazas with a variety of restaurants nearby! Here are a few options within a 5 minute drive of any of the forests.

Homer Watson Blvd & Manitou Dr:
- Gino's Pizza
- Subway
- Mr Sub
- Edelweiss Tavern (yes, has a children's menu)

Bleams Rd & Homer Watson Blvd:
- KFC
- Taco Bell
- A&W
- Tim Horton's
- Little Caesar's Pizza
- Taka Japanese Restaurant

If you don't mind driving a little further, drive along Bleams to Fischer-Hallman and turn right. You're bound to find something at the Williamsburg Town Centre (at Westmount) or the Sunrise Centre (at Ottawa).

JAMMIN' AFTER PARTY
5:00-8:00PM @ The Rum Runner (1 King St. West, Kitchener)

Get ready to party hearty! This is your chance to meet other letterboxers, do exchanges of travellers and personal stamps, grab a bite or pint, and nab event and HIPS stamps. Feel free to show up anytime and stay however long you wish.

Parking
Visit http://tinyurl.com/kuj2yxg for a downtown parking map. Park on the street or check out Lot 2 (FREE after 6:00PM).

Costumes
There is a totally wicked bonus stamp for all the peeps who wear fresh 1980s threads! So dig out your parachute pants, neon tights, Ray-Bans, puffy paint tees, legwarmers, bedazzled acid wash jeans, headbands, gold chains, shoulder pads, gothic velvet and lace, etc... and don't forget to big up your hair! Sue will bring a few extra costume pieces to the party, just in case.

Food & Drink
The Rum Runner is below the Walper Terrace hotel. During prohibition this area of the hotel was used to store alcohol, which was then run out the back door into the alleyway to avoid being caught by the police! Visit http://www.rumrunnerpub.com for the menu (yes, there's a kid's menu, not listed online).

Letterboxing Ontario Patches
Newly reprinted patches - get 'em while they're hot! Only $3 a piece.

Raffle @ 6:30PM
To help cover the cost of the event, we're holding a totally righteous raffle! Tickets are $2 each or $5 for 3 -- and we're calling it at 6:30PM sharp. (donations also welcome)

Door Prize
Get your ticket at Check-In for your chance to win a 1 night tipi rental package at Gordon's Park! We'll call the door prize also at 6:30PM.

Event & HIPS Stamps
The official BoxON! 2013 event stamp will be here, plus lookout for Hidden in Plain Sight (HIPS) boxes, and super secret special boxes... Available only at the jammin' letterboxing party!

Group Collective Stamp
Wouldn't it be wicked if everyone who came to the event carved part of a stamp, and then we planted it to celebrate BoxON! and the Ontario letterboxing community? Dude, we like totally have that planned! Everyone will have a chance to carve a little bit.

Gnarly Loot Bags
As if that wasn't enough, there are gnarly loot bags for everyone who chills with us at the Rum Runner!

Kids Activities
Do you have young'uns with you? Shelagh has generously offered to set up some special fun activities for kids to do at the after party! Find Shelagh at the event to join in.

Sep 28, 2013: Wrap Up
Just wanted to send a shout out from myself and Starhexen. We are so thrilled at the turn out today. It was exciting and overwhelming and flattering all in one. We are so happy so many people chose to spend their day looking for boxes that we hid and just wanted to do one more shout out to everyone who helped us plan, and carve, and create musical contraptions, and inspired us with their own events and hides. We did not get a chance to shout out to you in front of everyone but we hope you feel thanked.

To all the new(er) boxers that came out tonight. We secretly hope this experience has you hooked, addicted perhaps even, to letterboxing. We have tried hard over the years to get more people into the hobby and really support each other so please keep the communication going, use the Ontario message boards and continue to plant and carve and hide and find. :D

We would like to also thank you to those of you who worked with us to fix some glitches and bared with our vague clues at times, sometimes it just makes more sense while we are out there -- "it's obvious enough" we might say.. but then you realize that it may not be. I know we fall victim to it but everyone was so good about working through the glitches, it was awesome.. so thumbs up

Now to the good stuff, two event boxes have been added so make sure not to miss them. You can access the event boxes on the events main page- this includes the costume stamp and the live aid stamp.

All the series are up and ready to be logged, in fact many of you are doing it right now. If you have trouble finding a stamp, let me know and I will direct you the right way.

So thanks again to everyone for coming out, our little Kitchener Waterloo letterboxing team is so happy to have action in our forests and people looking for our letterboxes.. as long as you keep coming, we will keep planting :D.

You have all been stellar.

Cheers!.

Jen..... and Sue :D

Oct 10, 2013: BOX-ON 2013 Logging Finds
I noticed that a number of you have not logged your finds yet. Just a reminder to get on it :D.

Here is the event link to reference if you need to : http://www.atlasquest.com/showinfo.html?gEventId=2720

And please share your pictures with us on the event page. We would love to see things through your eyes.

If you have either or both already thank you so much.

Hope everyone is getting some last minute boxing in this weekend between feedings.
