Description

DIRECTIONS to the park:
** No matter which direction you go, the areas are well marked with brown signs directing you to Cane Creek Campground. If you go down Hwy 74, be aware that the Walmart and Mall generate a lot of traffic at times.

If getting to it from I-85 to I-485:

Can take Providence Rd exit and head southbound
Go through Weddington and into Waxhaw
Once in Waxhaw, turn left on Main St (there is a brown sign directing you to Cane Creek)
Then when Main St forks take the right fork (there is a brown sign pointing to a museum that way)
Past a large cemetery on the right and then turn right on Old Providence (there is a brown sign directing you to Cane creek)
Pass Lancaster Hwy (there is a stop sign in the middle of the road here)
Continue on through the stop sign (straight ahead) and look for the brown sign directing you to Cane Creek on the right.
When you reach the sign either turn left and travel a mile up to see the Day Use park on the right
Or continue another mile up the road to Cane Creek Rd. Turn left on Cane Creek Rd and follow it another mile to the end and that is the campground area.

ANOTHER ROUTE:

From I-485 get off on Independence (Hwy 74 east bound)
Go into Monroe.
You'll pass the Walmart on the left and then Monroe Mall on the right.
As you pass the mall you will see the bridge overhead and a lot of Hwy marker signs. (207,84,75,200)
Turn right under the bridge.
At the end of the ramp, turn right on Skyway Dr (there will be lots of Hwy markers again).
FOLLOW ALL THE SIGNS TO GO TO HWY 200.
Pass a Farmer's Market and over the bridge. Turn right immediately after the bridge.
Turn left at the light.
Turn right at the second light (see a brown sign pointing the way to JAARS, museum) onto Lancaster Hwy (Hwy 200)
Continue about 10 miles and you will see a green building on the left. Take a hard left turn left on Potter Rd (there is a brown sign directing you to Cane Creek)
Then right on Harkey Rd the day use area or continue up to Cane Creek Rd and turn right here for the Campground area.

Updated 3/28/07:
CLUES:
Bring your own! Print everything you can before you leave.

Anything that is not available will be available at the gathering near the copy machine.

If you are hand writing clues for boxes planted that day, leave the original clue in the box by the machine. Make yourself a copy to take home.

If you need to get clues you don't have, check the box by the copy machine and make a copy of what you don't have (please put originals back in box for others!).

***Check the clue box more than once-- people may be planting at different times and leave them there after you last checked!

Updated 3/28/07:

KIDS' ACTIVITIES:

There is a playground right beside the shelter (as well as restrooms).

I'll bring a ball. Feel free to bring anything that your kids enjoy playing with others.

There will be a kids' area set up with Easter Eggs with stamps and stickers in them.
The eggs are listed as "other" since there is no logbook or clue (they don't count to your f-count). The all start with "Easter Egg:" and then the name of the stamp. The name of the stamp is right on the stamp itself.

The idea is that kids don't need ink or anything. They can just pull out one sticker (ONLY ONE PLEASE) and take it with them. Or they can stamp it if they prefer with the stamp in it. Since there is no clues, they can re-hide wherever they like!

** Adults are permitted in the kids' area only when chaperoned by a child. IF you have a child chaperone and proper permission from a child, you may also enjoy the stamps if you like (but please leave the stickers for the kids).

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

UPDATE 3/23/07:

MUGGLE ACTIVITIES:

For anyone who has a muggle in tow, there are some other things to see and do:

Downtown Waxhaw has some neat antique shops and an antique clock shop (just drive down the main street in the downtown area and you can't miss it.

There are also some small museums:

http://www.perigee.net/~mwaxhaw/

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This park is VIRGIN letterbox territory (so far). Please see the map of this park here:
http://www.co.union.nc.us/gov_offices/parks/park_map.pdf

Also notice along with one or two hiker only trails, there are other trails marked for horses and motorbikes. Hikers are still welcome on those trails but be aware you will be sharing the trails on those.

Notice there is a "day use" side (where we'll have our tea party) and also a camping side, that has camping cabins, family/group camping, etc. You may not be able to make reservations and of these sites for this date until after Jan. 2nd!!!!

The Day Use side also has paddle boats, mini golf and other family fun activities, which may or maynot be available for use on the weekend of our tea party (i think it depends on the weather).... There's also a ball field, and if it's not being used, and if there's any interest, we may be able to have a pick up game!!
