Description

After boxing at the Double Lake recreation area last year, I was overwhelmed with the dogginess of it all....so we need to compensate with some feline stamps on the other side of Houston! Please join us for the Cat's Meow!

What: Potluck lunch and an afternoon of spring letterboxing
When: Saturday, April 7. Plan on eating around 11:00 am. I'll be there by 9:00 am.
Where: Jack Brooks Park in Galveston county. We have the Highlands Pavilion reserved for the day.
Directions: From Houston, take 45 south towards Galveston. Exit FM 2004 and take it south. Turn right into the park entrance. Drive until the road comes to a T, and turn right. The pavilion will be on your left.
Food: Please sign up to bring something for lunch. There are limited electrical outlets (all are inside a locked area of the pavilion I haven't seen yet) so consider bringing something that doesn't need heating.

If you are carving a stamp to plant, please make it something related to cats (cats, big cats, cartoon cats, something with "cat" in the name etc). Also please be aware this park is home to a large number of geocaches, so its a good idea to avoid any spots with apparent social trails. I'll check the location of all the boxes planted at the event so they can be moved if they are close to an existing cache.

A copier will be available for making copies of clues.

Mar 31, 2012: Event news
I visited the park both today and last weekend to plant boxes for the event. I've gotten lots of donated stamps, plus Sea Maid and Wry Me have planted boxes. As of today there are 15 boxes in the park, and I haven't planted any of my carves. I also just received an adorable series of 10 boxes which will be available only during the event! So, for those who want to get an early start, I'll be listing some of the clues this week (If AQ maintenance cooperates).

egg hunt - we will have an egg hunt for the kids at 10:30. Please have the kids stay at the pavilion (or another part of the park while we hide the eggs).

Mosquito alert - In some parts of the woods the mosquitoes are pretty bad right now. Please be sure to bring bug spray and wear light colored clothing.

Apr 1, 2012: Letterbox Map
I have the current boxes mapped out now. This will be updated and available Saturday. If you would like a copy now it's available here: http://www.atlasquest.com/gallery/viewphoto.html?gPhotoId=107993

FYI, this map only shows part of the park, only some of the trails, and none of the disc golf courses (there are two nice 18 hole courses here). The park entrance is on the right side of the map.

Apr 6, 2012: Lunch
I'll be bringing ingredients to make sandwiches for lunch tomorrow. Ham, turkey, bread, cheese, lettuce, onions, tomatoes and condiments. Feel free to bring any other additions you would like.

We will hide eggs starting around 10:00. Please ask the kids to stay in the pavilion or on the playground until 10:30.

I just got back from the park this morning. It's beautiful now! The mosquitoes are better (but not gone) and there are some low muddy spots on some trails after the rain but it's passable.
