Description

Okay, here's the deal. Sprite & Highlander had to cancel Hallowed Grounds this year, due to a personal tragedy. But since GreatBigSeabres and I were really looking forward to this event, we're doing our best to come up with SOMETHING to fill the void. :-) We will indeed being a Northern Erie County Cemetery tour. It will likely not be as awesome as the Hallowed Grounds we are all used to, but we're pulling this together in a week, and we're grateful for all the help that's been offered to us!!!

Our plan is to have the clues up and live by Friday afternoon/evening. If we have all the stamps planted in time to do so sooner, TRUST me, we will list them sooner, but I would count on printing Saturday morning... The event stamp and meet'n'greet portion will be at the Panera Bread location in Williamsville (8200 Transit, just north of Maple in the Lowe's plaza). This will take place from 12-3. Because we're meeting at a restaurant, and we're only there a few hours, we're requesting no additional tabletop event boxes be brought. We WILL have an event stamp, however. :-)

The route is being written to start at Panera, if that is what you choose to do. There is also a mid-point that can detour you there, if you want to get the first half done before you come for the event portion. (That's probably as clear as mud, but it's been a whirlwind day, so feel free to AQmail me for clarification.)

As is usually stated for the Hallowed Grounds tours, some of these cemeteries are right next to houses, and tucked in little residential areas where you wouldn't figure to see a cemetery. It helps to carry a camera, or some paper for tombstone rubbings. If you're approached by muggles, just say you're on a "Erie County Cemetery" tour.

As I said before, it may not be as awesome an event as we're all used to, but a lot of folks are helping to make it happen.
As I post this, we've already received offers of help from:
turkey feathers
Celtic Quinn
Lulahe
Jiggs
Kenlaur
Bumble
live laugh bubble bath
The Groundhogs & JD
Celtic Hound
goodie2shoes
SWGS
And probably one or two more I'm forgetting in my addled state. :-) Regardless, THANK YOU to everyone who's offered to help. You rock, truly.

BAC (& GBS)

Nov 3, 2011: Update for Saturday
Most of the stamps are planted, the last few are being planted Friday morning, and BAC is feverishly compiling clues. Whew!

Some beginning notes:
This is a tour of cemeteries in northern Erie County (using Walden Ave. as the southern boundary). We tried to be as complete and accurate as possible, but a couple of mistakes may have crept in, so your patience is requested and appreciated.

There is one error that came to light during planting – the stamp in “Holy Rest Cemetery” on the West Route reads “Holy Cross” due to a proofreading error on BfloAnonChick’s part when she was compiling the original list. Apologies are offered.

While doing this tour, you are likely to encounter some mud, and there is one box (Powers on the East Route) that requires a moderate amount of bushwhacking to get to. Consider this your heads-up. :-)
Also, the West Route includes 5 boxes on Grand Island, where there is a $1 bridge toll going on to the island. No toll returning.

These cemeteries range from large and corporate and busy, to tiny and (in some cases) all but forgotten. Please use appropriate caution when retrieving and rehiding. If you are approached by muggles, say you’re on a driving tour of cemeteries in Erie County (hey – you are!). There are no logbooks – each container holds only the stamp, so these should be pretty quick and easy to get. Most of these are planted in pouches, but there are some pill bottles and film canisters as well.

This tour was the result of a great deal of work in a short period of time by many folks. Thank you to all who helped.
Planters: BfloAnonChick, Celtic Quinn, GreatBigSeabres, The Groundhogs, Lulahe, turkey feathers
Carvers: BfloAnonChick, Bumble, Celtic Hound, Celtic Quinn, goodie 2 shoes, GreatBigSeabres, The Groundhogs, JD, live laugh bubble bath, Lulahe, SWGS, turkey feathers, White Stallion

Both halves of the tour start and end at Panera Bread on Transit Rd. in East Amherst (just north of Maple). Cemeteries that have a (*) next to their name have other boxes planted in them. The clues are not included in our route, but it gives you an idea of where to do your search.

Since the clues haven't been published yet, here are the ones receiving asterisks:
Transit Rural Cemetery(you might also print the clue for "Hoot" by GBS, as you'll pass right by!) (Bowmansville)
Harris Hill Cemetery (Clarence)
Clarence Fillmore Cemetery (Clarence)
Peppermint Rd. Cemetery (Lancaster)
Iszardi Cemetery (Lancaster)
Dixon Cemetery (Lancaster)
Hunts Corners Cemetery (Clarence Center)
Danser/Pioneer Cemetery (Clarence Center)
St. Mary's Cemetery (Swormville)
Skinnersville Cemetery (Amherst)
White Chapel Memorial Park (Amherst)
Elmlawn Cemetery (Tonawanda)
Mt. Olivet Cemetery (Tonawanda)
City Cemetery (Tonawanda)
Forest Lawn Cemetery (Buffalo)
Mt. Calvary Cemetery (Cheektowaga)
St. Stanislaus West (Cheektowaga)
Our Lady Help of Christians (Cheektowaga)
Williamsville Cemetery (Williamsville)
Ss. Peter & Paul Cemetery (Williamsville)

Looking forward to seeing everyone!

Nov 4, 2011: Ready...Set...
The clues are now posted!

West Route:

2 additional notes:
- A compass would be helpful for one of the boxes on the West Route.
- Dixon Cemetery (Lancaster) has also received an asterisk this evening.

Looking forward to seeing everyone tomorrow!

Nov 4, 2011: Event stamp
Will be available at Panera's from 12-3. BAC & GBS will split the time and both be there together from 1-2 p.m. You really should come for lunch and meet us both at once to prove we are two different people :-p

Nov 4, 2011: One more thing...
(I feel like I'm giving an Apple keynote, lol...)

When I was putting the stamp in Holy Sepulchre (Cheektowaga, towards the end of the West Route), I noticed a sign indicating that they are doing an All Souls service at 9am tomorrow. So best to avoid going there at that time. :-)
