Description

SZSRocks invites you to get your dancing (or boxing) shoes on and be-bop (or be-box) around Elk River!

The event will start at Otsego Regional Park (15186 96th Street, Otsego). This park is located off the Great River Road (CSAH 39 and CSAH 42), one mile out of Elk River. This park will serve as our main base for the day, but plan on driving to other parks and locations as you Rock Around Elk River.

The theme for this event not only includes rock n' roll, but also rocking chairs, rocks of the mineral variety, Rocky Balboa, and pretty much anything else that "rocks" your world (i.e.: letterboxing rocks, M&M's rock, dragonflies rock, etc.).

Since this will be a type of road rally, you are encouraged to bring a cell phone in order to be able to communicate with the event coordinators (just in case you get lost), a way of keeping track of time (since hood ornaments do not always make accurate sun dials), a map of the Elk River area or GPS would probably be helpful, but is not required and a digital camera/phone camera just in case there are some photo opportunities!

Schedule for the day:

Arrival Time: 9:00 - 9:15 a.m.
(Come early if you want to do exchanges.)
Briefing: 9:30 a.m.
Hit the Road: 9:45 a.m.
Lunch at Otsego Regional Park (throughout the day)
Back at the Park: 4-4:30 p.m.
(There will be time for exchanges here while we hand out event prizes.)
Departure: 5:00 p.m.

Food: Coffee and donuts/cookies will be provided at the start. Please bring a food item to share for lunch and bring your own non-alcoholic beverages (even though some may think that beer rocks). The electricity at the park will be shut off for the season, so plan accordingly. We will also provide brats/hot dogs for grilling, buns, paper plates, plastic utensils and napkins.

Location and Letterboxes: You are welcome, and highly encouraged, to plant letterboxes for this event! Feel free to plant anywhere in or near Elk River (within a reasonable driving distance). We will have boxes planted at several parks, including Otsego Regional Park, Woodland Trails (20135 Elk Lake Road, Elk River) and Hillside City Park (10801 181st Ave NW, Elk River). For a list and map of the parks in Elk River, go to the City of Elk River's website (www.ci.elk-river.mn.us) and then click on the Parks & Recreation link. Boxes can be planted anywhere...not just at parks.

After you sign up for this event, please send SZSRocks an AQ mail and answer this question: What is your favorite "rock" song?

This event is brought to you by SZSRocks. We look forward to helping you Rock Around Elk River!

Sep 24, 2011: Favorite Rock Song
Hi everyone! We are getting so excited (and a little nervous!) about the MN Fall Gathering: Rock Around Elk River! Thanks for signing up. If you have not done so already, please reply to this AQ mail and let us know what your favorite rock song is. It can be anything, really...favorite rock-n-roll, country rock, hymn, etc. It doesn't even need to have the word "rock" in it. :-) Thanks!
See you soon!

Sep 26, 2011: Notice for Saturday's Event
It is advisable to wear jeans and have a long-sleeved shirt along for Rocking Around Elk River. When we were out planting boxes, we were like magnets for the sand burrs. Also, we will have bug spray available, but you may want to bring some for when you are out on the trails. The bugs weren't too bad yesterday, but you just never know! :-)

Sep 29, 2011: It's Getting Exciting!
So far, I know of at least 33 traditional letterboxes that have been planted around Elk River. And, if that isn't enough for you, Zimmerman is only 10 miles up the road, and there are another 12 traditional letterboxes up there. The event clue packet is growing. It's going to be a very busy day!

Don't forget to print out the checklist on the event page. This will be helpful to keep track of extra stamps you need to collect. Please let us know if you have last minute questions or need any information.

According to weather.com, it is going to be 64F and sunny on Saturday, which will be great boxing weather. We can't wait to rock (and roll) around Elk River with you!
