Event to be held at Veterans Memorial Park in Sylmar, CA. Veterans Memorial Park is a beautiful 96.5-acre park comprising rolling hills, grassy picnic areas, a large pavilion, camping areas and a community recreation building.The park occupies the grounds of the original site of a Veterans Hospital built in the 1940s but severely damaged in the 1971 Sylmar Earthquake. In 1972, the U.S. government transferred ownership of the property to the County and after demolition and rebuilding, Veterans Memorial Park was dedicated in 1979.

Aug 30, 2011: Updates
I have reserved a group camping site for Thursday and Friday night at the event location. We are allowed up to 25 people but no trailers (so we will be tent camping). I am going to work on getting a permit so we can have a bonfire. There was a large fee for the site so a $25 fee will be requested if you are staying the night (*I plan on having a box available for those who camp to go night boxing)

On Friday, 11/11/11 at 11:00 Love to Carve will be offering a Stamp Carving Workshop. Please bring any carving tools & stamp pads you have and we will supply the rest. A materials fee is requested and we have extra carving tools as needed.

Oct 27, 2011: Updates
Love to Carve has requested that we move the the carving class to Friday, 11/11/11. So it will be on Friday and I am considering a letterrock making class for Saturday.

Due to high winds, red flag warnings, and fire danger the local fire department has declined my campfire permit. They are reviewing their decision, but at this time I would suggest bringing lots of blankets. The camping area is grassy and soft. The 2 nearest restrooms are still closed due to catching fire a couple of years ago in the Sylmar fire. There are additional restrooms about 100 yards away from the campsite.

At this time there will be 42+ letterboxes to find, so bring your hiking boots and a good supply of water.

Oct 31, 2011: Updates
Just talked to the Captain on Duty at Station 91. He granted the permit for a campfire, but warned us if it gets windy at all or if a red flag warning is issued then the fire must be put out.

He also shared that there are no limits on camp stoves, so feel free to bring them and use them. I figured we would potluck for lunch on Friday & Saturday, so please plan accordingly. Dinner & breakfast are on your own.

I will be given a key to the gate and camping area allowing us to drive up and unload close to the campsites. It also means that I think I can open the gate to release people who have to leave after night boxing.

Nov 9, 2011: Updates
One day away and I fear rain...

Seems likely it will rain Saturday, but we plan on having a great time Friday and if it pours sleep in our car Friday night.

We are looking forward to night boxing Friday night, even in a light rain.

When you get to the park, take a right at the main gate (no entrance fee) and follow the signs for the group camp area. There is a large parking lot for us at the northeast corner of the park. If you need to unload closer you can find me or call me at (562) 895-2235.
