TANGLEWOOD NATURE CENTER - Elmira, NY

Description

L.O.S.T. at Tanglewood Nature Center

L(etterboxers) O(f) the S(outhern) T(ier) invite you to come join us for the first gathering in the Corning/Elmira area! It will be held at the beautiful Tanglewood Nature Center in Elmira, NY. For directions and nature center information, please go to Tanglewood.

This will be a chance to meet and greet, make exchanges, and hike along the 9 miles of beautiful, scenic trails. In addition to the 40 or so stamps already planted at the center, there will be new series and stamps to be found!

Another exciting aspect of this event is that it will be open to the public from 2:30-4:00PM as one of Tanglewood's Saturday Fun with Nature events. This means that people from the community may stop by and ask you about letterboxing. This is your chance to share about this exciting hobby and hopefully interest others in this area.

This year's theme....CHILDHOOD DELIGHTS...Oh, to be a kid again!

Please bring your own lunch, snacks, drinks, etc.

Aug 21, 2010: L.O.S.T. at Tanglewood

Event: L.O.S.T. at Tanglewood Nature Center

Hello everyone!

So glad to see a good planned turnout for the first L.O.S.T. event in our area!

I see some familiar names, some I have been excited to meet, and some travelers from far away! I hope and pray that it turns out to be a fun day for all!

As the description states, one fun aspect of this event is that Tanglewood Nature Center has encorporated it into their, Saturday Fun with Nature events.

So don't be surprised...in fact, expect folks to drop by and ask about all aspects of letterboxing. Be prepared, if you like, to share about carving, planting, finding, etc...and perhaps bring along some supplies to demo. It is always fun to interest others in this wonderful hobby!

Looking forward to meeting everyone!

Until then...

HAPPY TRAILS and HAPPY TIMES!~~~~~

Aug 22, 2010: PLACES TO STAY
For those coming from a distance, I have compiled a short list of hotels in the area to check out. I would personally recommend the Big Flats or Horseheads area rather than Elmira. Although I did not list them, Corning is also a nice area to stay but ~ 15 miles west of Tanglewood.

Sep 1, 2010: countdown to L.O.S.T. at Tanglewood Event
Yeah! I have decided to print out clue books for the event. Someone in the Fox Den has agreed to help make and print them out. I am VERY grateful. For those who are able to print out their own clues at home, you are certainly welcome to and it might allow any visitors to the event to have a book in case I don't bring enough.

Now about the boxes to be found. Here is a list of boxes both currently planted and planning to be planted at Gleason Meadows & Frenchman's Bluff and Personius Woods. These are the two trail systems that are part of Tanglewood Nature Center. Personius Woods is a short drive from the main meeting area but there will be new boxes planted there. Printing out a map of these areas would be VERY helpful.

Gleason Meadows & Frenchman's Bluff

1) Eric Carle's "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" PART 1 of 3 (4)
2) Eric Carle's "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" PART 2 of 3 (5)
3) Eric Carle's "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" PART 3 of 3 (7)
4) THE "I"CONS of ROCK (26)
5) ALTER EGOS: Arthur 'Orin' Curry
6) ALTER EGOS: Bruce Wayne
7) ALTER EGOS: Clark Kent
8) ALTER EGOS: Dr. Robert Bruce Banner
9) ALTER EGOS: Peter Parker
10) ALTER EGOS: Tony Stark
11) Mr. Potato Head gets L.O.S.T. (9) NEW
12) Mrs. Potato Head gets L.O.S.T. (10) NEW

Personius Woods

1) TRACKING.... (8)
2) Lydia's L.O.S.T. Ponies (7) NEW
3) L.O.S.T. in a Monopoly Game (9) NEW
4) Larry Boy and the Mystery of the L.O.S.T. Veggies! (9) NEW
5) Harris Hill

OTHER PLANTS:

1) L.O.S.T. SNAPSHOTS (4) by kurlock NEW

Be sure to check out other nearby boxes (too many to list). There are a few boxes on HARRIS HILL, which is VERY close to Personius Woods. Harris Hill also offers some amusements, but will you have time for that? While in the area, if you want a nice history lesson and visit the final resting places of some famous Elmirans including Mark Twain, Ernie Davis, Hal Roach and John Jones, I would stop by the recently planted, Haunting Woodlawn series (by bookworm 13).

OOOOHH...getting so excited to see everyone!

See everyone then!

Sep 6, 2010: places to eat....
Just a reminder that there will be no coordinated food at the event, I am asking everyone to bring their lunches, snacks and drinks with them. That said, if you want to bring foodstuffs to share like waterbottles, granola bars, etc, that is perfectly fine!

Before or after the event if you would like to stop at get food, I would suggest the Big Flats/ Horseheads area in the vicinity of the Arnot Mall. There you can find any fast food joint you might want, but also some new restaurants like the Texas Raodhouse and Buffalo Wild Wings recently opened ... some staples like Olive Garden and Outback ... and the buffet style, Old Country Buffet.

Some of them are listed here: places to eat

Perhaps those who want to can gather at the Old Country Buffet or similar after the event if feasible? (I believe on a Saturday, adults are ~ $12-14).

Sep 7, 2010: L.O.S.T. @ Tanglewood event

Some final(?) thoughts before Saturday.....

  • When you arrive at Tanglewood Nature Center, look for the signs directing you to the area inside the museum where things will be set up.

  • Don't forget to color the event stamp! (hint, hint)....there will be no event book to log into, just the event stamp.

  • The museum closes at 5:00PM on Saturdays so we will definately have to be out before then, but trails will still be open. (The trails actually open at sunrise and close at sunset for those who get there early or want to stay a little later.)

  • A great big thanks (in advance) to IMAGINE THAT! Children's Shop located in Corning on Market Street. Ginny Coon and the wonderful staff at IMAGINE THAT! have provided some neat little prizes. SO I guess that there will be some contests as well! Make sure you visit the contest/prize area for your chance to take something home. Prizes will be announced @ 3:45PM (so if you want a break in the hiking for the day, this would be a good time to plan it). And if you get a chance sometime, stop by IMAGINE THAT!

  • The weather looks very favorable on Saturday for spending the day outdoors. I hope to meet everyone, but I know with the good weather and all the hiking around the area, it may be hard for folks to get out of the woods. Not necessarily a bad thing! Happy traveling to all ... especially those coming from a ways away.

HAPPY TRAILS and HAPPY TIMES!~~

Sep 11, 2010: HAPPY TRAILS to L.O.S.T. 2010......
I want to thank everyone for making the investment to come to Tanglewood today. It was so fun meeting those I have not me before. I know it was more of a get-out-and-hike kind of event than a formal meet-greet-and-stamp kind of event. But on a day like today, who wants to be inside anyway? I sure hope everyone had a fun day! I know that I did! Thanks for making the first L.O.S.T. event ... and the first letterboxing event in this area (I think)...a great success. I can't wait until we meet together again.

Until then...
