You may find the Postals Help page useful to learn about this aspect of letterboxing. It does cost more than traditional boxing (if you don't factor in the gas) b/c you are responsible for the postage to send it to the next person ($3-$5) per postal.

IMHO, a postal letterbox is COMPLETELY different from a traditional one, with only the contents of the box being similar. I tried out postals and they just didn't do it for me - the clues, the hunt, the discovery of a new location: these are all an important part of letterboxing for me. Mailing to a known address and receiving a package in the mail leaves too much of the fun out of it.

Yes, obviously you don't need to solve a clue or take a walk for a postal box. I was speaking of the box itself, not the clues to the box or the finding experience. She wanted to know what a postal was and how they worked.

Sometimes I make people solve a clue to join my tracker, and I have to walk to my mailbox all the time to get them!

Thanks, I could imagine doing that. It means organizing and keeping track, but other than that, I would just send out one box. And it could be my own box, right?

I can see your point, but I also do LTCs, so I am already getting and mailing. But yes, in decent weather, searching is the most fun, hands down. It happens that we have 13 inches of snow, at the moment.
The only thing that could deter me from doing singles, would be...do we have to use those darn tape-covered envelopes?

If you're launching a single, there really isn't any work to do. You make a tracker and people sign up, then you mail the postal to the first person on the list.
The work for launching a postal goes into creating the postal. The postal contents (book, stamp, pouch, mailer) are all avenues to exercise your creativity. I've seen some amazing postal books, for example.
If you're going to launch a single, it had better be your box, or you had better have gotten permission from whoever it belongs to! :)
If you're launching a postal, you can use whatever you want. But put instructions if you do something non-standard.

I once sent a "naked" postal in a metal lock box. In order to open it (and get the logbook and stamp) you had to solve a clue to get the combination.

No, I never got them back. It's very discouraging because I see her participate in other postals.

I like that concept maybe instead of sending a naked postal you could send it in a box of some sort.

Me too! I have one that I want to do as a single....it's not hand carved but it's a custom air force logo stamp...is there interest or not? I had it planted here and the box disintegrated but the stamp survived.

Oh gracious, I don't think I would be comfortable with that--there might be unsuspecting children and nuns in the postal ring-best to leave those for WOM
(note: best read with a prim schoolmarm or victorian governess accent)

Alas and aaargh!
Life got in the way of my postal-ing! But, with a mighty heave, I have forced life back in its place and I am caught up on my postals. Sorry for the delays.

I've been getting back into postals and have signed up for a few singles, it is only fair that I send out one of mine. This one has been out a few times. He'll be heading out (rightfully so) on St. Patrick's Day.

I am glad to hear that you were able to get life under a bit of control again. Hope it stays that way. We've all been there.
