Yikes! Chevy Suburban "Letterboxing" ad!

I just found a full, two-page ad in a magazine that says, "Welcome to Letterbox Camp" across the top. At first I thought it was those people who are selling letterboxing kits off the web and organizing LB birthday parties and all that.
But no.
It's one big huge Chevy Suburban ad couched in a "family-friendly" activity. It's got lift-up flaps that reveal bits of the Suburban under it, because "the Chevy Suburban [is] the perfect vehicle to help you on your letterboxing quest!"
And yes, it lists the LbNA site and Altlasquest.
Thankfully it does stress leaving no trace and rehiding well. But the whole thing is so slick it makes the entire hobby feel cheap and corporate.
Blech.

They could have spent their money better. I'll never buy a Suburban.

You know, when I read that the first time, I was SURE it was just a big joke and I ignored it. You mean this actually happened?!
I need to see a copy of this. What magazine are we talking about again?

Where exactly is Letterbox Camp?
I suppose it's in Connecticut.

*pout* Now you believe me? And I am not even one of the practical jokers on this site... *sigh*
I can't say that I blame you too much though, if I had not seen it with my own eyes I would have thought the same thing...
Cheers!

So please tell us this wasn't officially condoned, then?

*rhetorical question alert*
I am just curious, who are these officials you feel would have the power to condone it or not?!?

Not by me. I'd rather people drive around in more fuel-efficient vehicles than a Chevy Suburban. I'd rather condone a hybrid vehicle if I was going to be condoning stuff.
Actually, I'd rather condone some cheap walking shoes from Payless Shoes. Wonderful things, shoes are. =)

As if anyone who actually letterboxes is going to do a stamp like their ad suggests. ACK! I'm glad to know Atlasquest didn't sell out to Disney and Chevy.

What's especially noxious is Chevy has a HUGE advertising budget, and they're using this free, community-supported hobby to promote their product. I didn't plant my boxes to be used by Chevy ad wonks. Shameful, shameful, shameful.
