For the plastic container in your rescue kit, is it a lock n lock or equivalent "good" one, already camo'ed in some way? I've been debating what to do for that.

It's a water-tight screw-top plastic container, not camo'd. I have been thinking of making extra duct tape pouches to carry.

And just what are these things carried in?

Baby blue corduroy backpack, soon to bear letterboxing patches. :)

The contraption is a work in progress. Got the idea for the straps after I glued on the box, so the neck strap is duct-taped to the back, and made of twine. Eventually, I'd like to re-do, probably by drilling holes in the cutting board and using another bungee cord. The bungee you see is for the waist strap, and hooks to the handle of the board.

Contraption, closed
open
back, with my markers stuffed in there

On the trail, I pull the markers to the side and use the back bands to hold lids and baggies and things.

An interesting idea, FK. I think if it were me I would paint that board with a black magic marker, so you wouldn't stand out like a sore thumb in the woods. I guess if you dropped it, tho, it would be easily found the way it is now.
Very crafty of you.

I think the next iteration will definitely be less obnoxious. I have a weakness for bright colors.

I carry a multitude of different items. Probably the most unusual is the pair of pliers... :-)

Okay, I'll bite...what are the pliers for?

Duct Tape (wrapped around a piece of plastic tubing to save room)

This is brilliant. Just today I needed DT and didn't have it. I'm so stealing this idea.!

In my Hello Kitty backpack

Now I have backpack envy.

I take the minimalist approach - a regular zip sandwich bag with two markers, 4 x 6 index cards as my logbook, pen and sig stamp stickers (let's not get into that, OK?). If I'm going with friends, I would use the bag that Cherokee Rose made for me and include a compass and my sig stamp and ink pad. Done.

I know you're travelin' lite........but you're also doin' a lot more on the trail than letterboxin'.

That pack is your "home". and has to have what you need on a daily basis.

I just got back from a short trip down the coast with some of my Boy Scouts and thought about you!
Have Fun!

various fountain pens, filled with "bulletproof" ink. The ink is chemically designed to bond permanently to cellulose, so once it is on paper, NOTHING will get it off short of shredding the paper. It is waterproof, UV proof, bleach and ammonia proof, etc. So even if the logbooks get soaked later on, I know that my entry will survive.

Oh, please, tell us more. Brand names, sources, colors?

I have a clipboard for when there is no "table". It gives the log book some extra support.
We had a very wet spring here. Flip flops and a towel came in handy at that time, but I don't keep those in my backpack at all times.

Sorry for the late reply, I've been (and still am) on a road trip for a while.

Noodler's Ink is the only brand that makes inks sold as "bulletproof." Before I get into lists of colors, I usually get my inks online from Swishers or Pendemonium, but many fountain pen stores carry them. After days of reading and poring over color comparison charts, I settled on Old Manhattan Black (available only in NYC) and Luxury Blue (almost a denim blue) to keep on hand at all times.

Other colors that I understand are bulletproof are:

Aircorp Blue Black
Bulletproof Black (very well behaved in fountain pens)
Blue Black
Fox Red
Hunter Green
Lexington Gray
Luxury Blue
Walnut (near bulletproof)
Zhivago (near bulletproof)
Heart of Darkness (some say this is the deepest black ink out there)
Polar Black (freeze resistant in your pen)
Eternal Polar Blue (freeze resistant)
Legal Blue
Manhattan Blue
Banknote Green
Old Manhattan Black
Galileo Manuscript Brown
Eternal Brown
Iraqi Indigo
Legal Lapis
Blue Ghost (completely invisible under regular light, glows blue under UV light)

Here is a color chart showing some of the colors:
http://www.noodlersink.com/samples.html

I grabbed the list of bulletproof colors from this thread, which lists mentions colors that are only available outside the US:
http://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/index.php?/topic/19564-complete-list-of-noodlers-ink/

If you are still with me and starting to wonder more about waterproof inks, here is a (slightly out of date) index of many water tests of different inks, not just Noodler's:
http://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/index.php?/topic/40806-index-of-water-tests/

This past week, however, I've decided that black and blue are a little too boring for some logbooks, so I've stopped worrying about waterfastness and have been using a gorgeous blackish purple and a vintagey looking brown in logbooks.

One of the most useful items I carry is a cloth placemat to throw down on the ground or on top of a rock, stump, etc... to keep my logbook clean. It easily folds but makes a great stamping surface.
