The manual says to use the spacer bar to make up to 1" books

I use 1/2" diameter owires to make my letterbox logbooks and use the space bar you asked about. The space bar makes the holes punch closer to the edge of the page. It came with my blue Bind-it-All but is an option with the pink one. Hobby Lobby sells the Bind-it-All and I think they also sell the space bar.

Here's some info about the space bar:

http://www.binditall.com/SpaceBar.html The video doesn't work from the link on this page but the pictures explain how to install the space bar and show the difference in the distance from the edge of the page to the holes.

video showing how to install the space bar and ordering info

The hardest part for me to remember is how to insert the wires so the seam is in the back of the book. This helps:

Hi Wry,

No need to scan the manual, though I very much appreciate it. I actually came across a very helpful blog post from Campfire Lady that answered my question. I will try again tomorrow and report back to you all.

In case anyone is interested, Target has 3 x 5 index cards for sale this week for 50 cents a pack. I bought 8 so I will have plenty if I make mistakes.

Thanks to everyone! You are a great group of people!!

Patty

Thanks for the links, Scooter's Mom. I'm going to try using the space bar next time. Mine actually came with one so at least I know what it is for. I guess I need to go get out there and do it. I really got discouraged after a few crummy attempts, but I am determined not to quit.

Thanks again!

Patty

Hi Guys,

I'm the Newbie Needing Help. I told you I would get back to you on my progress and I'm happy to report that today things went ~way~ better. I think my problem was that I was over-thinking things (I'm a Virgo). I was so worried about size dimensions, which holes to use, etc. This is what I did today. I got 3 x 5 index cards and cut them into 2 x 3". (Yes I had 1 inch waste, which I tossed). I then used the 2 inch end and centered it best I could. I then cut out some heavy scrapbook paper slightly bigger than 2 x 3 " and centered it and used it as a cover. I think the key is being mindful of not getting into the next set of punch squares. So, I put it all together with 4 holes on the O wire. Success! I know they aren't the most professional in the world, but at least they are presentable. I feel a whole lot more confident and expect things can only get better from here.

Thanks to all of you for your help!

Patty

PS Not sure if my message came through but Target has 3 x 5 index cards for .50 cents for 100 this week on sale!

I visited our "local" (40 miles away) Hobby Lobby last night to pick up some coils for my BIA and was shocked to see their normal spot filled with other merchandise and a BIA and some assorted accessories on the clearance rack. Unfortunately, there were no coils there, so it looks as though I will be resorting to online ordering. I don't know if this was only a local discontinuation or company wide but those who can access a Hobby Lobby might want to check them out for marked down merchandise.

Being the thrifty person I am, I found that Walmart online is the cheapest place to buy O-wires that I've found. They were even cheaper than my favorite store, Amazon. The downside is the shipping is pretty slow (5-7 days) and you pay postage, but I have a Walmart Neighborhood Grocery store close by and I can pick it up there for free. Or you can pick it up at any Walmart for free.

I've read several articles and reviews pointing to Bind It All being discontinued. I'm sure there are some surplus they will try to get rid of. I got a huge box of wires, chipboard, etc 2 years ago, for 75% off. From what I have read, Cinch On wires by We R Memory Keepers are the same as BIA O- wires. I need some more of the 3/4 " size. I thought I would use more 1/2", but I like the larger, more sturdy ones.

Is it my imagination, or are these o-wires getting harder to find? I bought a bunch at Walmart online for cheap (1/2 inch size) awhile back and now they don't seem to have them at all.

Just checked Amazon and they have Zutter Owire 1/2-Inch, 6-Piece, Black for $3.81 a pack. That's a really good price.

If you want bulk, they have Zutter Bulk Owire 1/2-Inch, 100-Piece, Silver for $42.99.

Just call me thrifty--

I use the 1/2 inch most of all, but sometimes the 3/4 inch for box logbooks. The 1-inch is good for letterboxer logbooks. I've gotten to the point where I only use 1/4 of the directions. Once you go through the directions once or twice all the way through, you'll see what I mean about some of the directions being unnecessary. It's definitely a trial and error process at the beginning.

When I first got my BIA these videos really helped. http://binditall.com/VideoGuide.html

It also helps to have a logbook to look at when I'm binding one. It keeps me from putting the coils in the book backwards.

I use the 1/2 inch coils for logbooks that will be put in letterboxes. My books are usually about 3x5 inch or smaller and about 40-50 pages.

I was pretty sorry when I first started with mine. I 'm not at all a crafty person so if I can get it, you will too! It was a lot of trial and error. The more I messed up the more determined I was to do it right. Don't feel bad if you have a hard time at first. Just keep at it. And don't be shy about asking for help. I did and everyone was great.

My favorite sizes are 1/2 inch (inside plants logbooks) and I also like the 3/4 inch and 1 inch for logbooks for use out in the field. I bought some 3/8 inch wires and to me, they are basically useless--too small. The 1 1/2 inch size is way too big to be practical to me, at least.

Good luck! You will enjoy it! It's a lot of fun.

For small logbooks for small containers: 1/2 inch. For larger containers (thicker and 2" deep) , I say 3/4 inch. The 1/2 inch only holds about 30 pieces of card stock.

I make a lot of large logbooks, so I use a lot of 3/4 inch. Depends what you are making...

You can always bind with ribbon or leather cord if you need a different size.

Chipboard I usually find at Craft Warehouse, Michaels or JoAnns.

Good luck!
