Has anyone seen the new Chevy Suburban ad? It is entitled.. "Welcome to Letterbox Camp" and invites you to "Find the hidden cashes and lift the flaps to learn what features make the Chevy Suburban the perfect vehicle to help you on your letterboxing quest!"

Wow...

*stunned*

I found it in one of the Disney Magazines... Family Fun. It was not an article as it specifically had ADVERTISEMENT printed at the top of the pages (and was obviously slanted towards the chevy vehicle). Although this magazine has had LB articles in it previously...

Just got our copy of Family Fun today and saw the ad--really had more info about letterboxing than about the Suburban!! Now if only they filled the Suburban with letterboxing and carving supplies upon purchase...

Got mine, too, it was the front back ad not a two page spread that were in some magazines. Not sure I have an opinion, but it does make me a bit apprehensive that people will rush out like it's an easter egg hunt and not pay proper attention to who might be watching or re-hidiation, etc. But, like I said, I don't quite have an opinion yet.

Did anyone check the link they included?

http://www.familyfun.com/letterboxcamp

Unbelievable that they would use our hobby to promote their vehicle.

Wow, that site sucks. Not that I'd ever buy an American car anyway, but now I really don't like Chevy! :D

I clicked the link, and I really don't see the connection between the Chevy SUV and letterboxing. Is this spelled out better, elsewhere?

The thing is.....since nobody "owns" letterboxing, there's no way of stopping people from cashing in on it.

what bothers me is how they are in a sorts teaching that letterboxes should have chevy related gifts etc inside...and that letterboxing is a "chevy" kind of thang :-(

I wouldn't worry too much about that. They only have to find one letterbox to set them straight on that concept, and anyone who's likely to dig into LbNA or Atlas Quest will likely have figured it before they even find that.

Why don't you plant a "Say No to Chevy Suburbans!" letterbox to make you feel better. You know it would. ;o)

I was thinking, put a competitor's trinket/stamp in the Chevy boxes.

Better yet, tell Chevy you will be spending all your discretionary income on rubber stamps and NOT saving for that brand-spankin-new suburban, and you will be telling thousands of your online friends to do the same. Then stick your tongue out at the computer screen. So there! ; )

I feel much better now (yeah, like I'd ever spend money on a suburban ussault vehicle).

Good Point...
but it's still what irritated me about the ad the most.

I'd call it something like...

Did you explore that link?

On the table, is a "list" that you can click on and it brings up 4 different things.

My favorite is the 2 page Personal Journal to fill in after a successful hunt to a letterbox: "Describe the wildlife/trees & flowers" is okay, and "what was your favorite part of the hunt" but "what items were in the letterbox?" ?!? Are they thinking of a geocache?
