As an aside, I see no difference between store bought and those that are made at home with the spiral binding that seem to be getting popular.

Partly true. If you don't have a binder and you can found a small enough book that is bound ------ (if you can't find a small one, you may be able to cut the larger one in half!)------, you can embellish it, or use it as is. I've been making books with gift cards and others from odd bits of natural material that I LOVE to collect. The palm trees in my yard shed these things that are flat and wooden and textured and cut easily enough to make some really fun covers.

You can make one from a discarded chipboard box and cover it with an old hanky, some woven grass, or that really cool tee shirt from the 80's that you just can't part with. Yeah, that one! Don’t think we don’t know you still have it stashed in there. *nodding* There’s a lot of stuff sitting around your house right now that can become a log book cover. The kids art work is amazing as a cover! Have some broken earrings that you are thinking about discarding? Use ‘em to embellish your made or purchased book! Shoot, take a pen apart, there's lots of fun little bits in there that just add some umph! Those little scraps of yarn from your knitting project are sweet tied to a book. You don’t knit? No problem… use that sweater that’s in the back of the closet that has a hole in that. You know, the one that you intended to get fixed but never did?? INSTANT curly yarn! Plastic food lids can become sturdy covers for books… sand ‘em a bit and glue cool paper to it… or another part of that tee shirt… you didn’t use it all to make the first book did you? I didn’t think you would. Look around and go wild!

It’s trash to treasure log book week… go for it! Wooooo!

On that same line of questioning- Is it rude to send a codex bound hard cover logbook in a PLB because of the extra weight that that book binding and cardboard jacket adds? I want a neat logbook, but I don't want people to have to pay too much to send it from place to place.

I am thrilled and impressed with all who have taken the time and effort to create these handmade treasures (codex bound logbooks). I love to admire them and love to receive them.

I happen to be in this hobby to enjoy the artistic creations of other carvers and logbook makers. I definitely go for quality and creativity over quantity. If a plb costs a bit more to send, in my opinion it is balanced out by the fact that it was worth it to receive.

I was struck by Lock Wench's trifecta for traditionals (great carve, great location, great clue/hide). It is so true... when you get all three with a find, it is special (and not expected for all boxes, to be sure). It is the same for postals, I suppose. Great carve, great logbook, great coordination with theme = quality plb. That is not to say that every plb is expected to hit the mother lode (as we are all at different skill levels), but isn't that what we all strive for?

Quote self-conscious about my stamp-carving abilities

DO NOT!! I REPEAT!! DO NOT!! feel self-conscious or belittle your carving ability.

i will paraphrase what a great carver once said, "I would rather find a crudely hand carved stamp than a store bought one, any day."

Besides, "Beauty is in the eye of the Beholder"

i saw this and thought what a great idea for a postal. (thanx dragonflies)
Carve a stamp of what the "trash" was and then make your logbook out of the "trash".
The trash doesn't have to be the whole logbook. It could be just a part of the logbook or whatever your creative mind comes up with. Starting Sept 1st? Limited to 15.
Anyone interested?

Quote Being fairly new to postals, I am finding that the logbooks are very interesting. Not only the actual construction of the book, but what other PLBers have stamped and written inside. I'm often caught up in reading the logbook that I have to remind myself to stamp in!

I've been keeping my logbooks simple, and I can't wait to read them when they come back at the end of the rings!!!!

Quote Eeek! Now I'm really intimidated. I was feeling self-conscious about my stamp-carving abilities already since I'm very new to this.

Oh gosh - my earlier post was to encourage, not to make you feel intimidated in any way....the logbook construction itself or intricate or fancy carvings were not at all what I was refering to - it was the words that other PLBers wrote to each other. Of course, looking at all the neat stamps, from beginners like me to the more experienced, is fantastic, but what I find facinating are the actual thoughts that others convey.

I apologize if this newbie was in any way responsible for you feeling self-consious. Not my intention at all. I really was trying to encourage, not discourage.

Quote I have spent more time making my log books for PLBs because there's less chance of water damage. It's fun to make them... although I am trying to be careful about the weight issues. We used foam to make the covers for the kids PLBs.

if you are uncomffy making books, you can send cards. I saw one that was cards in a little photo album. Cute. I saw one that was folded paper with a wicked cover... adorable. I got one that was cards bound together with a zip tie... practical and great.

As always, it's your box, do what makes you feel best!

No, you didn't make me feel intimidated. I'm excited about carving and the log books and postals. I'm pretty hard on myself about most things that I do (scrapbooking, sewing, etc.). Actually, after reading the first few posts, I went to check out the tutorial on bookmaking and actually got inspired. It looks do-able. I'll try anything once!

So, after all this, I'm encouraged, not discouraged.

Thanks for all the great ideas, posts.

That is a very good tutorial on book making. It inspired us as well.
We have seen so many different logbooks with postals. They are all uniquely special!

Oh, I'd love to do this!!!! My son's teacher was so great at recycling - she had the most fabulous ideas for things. SHe also used plastic plates and cups whenever they cooked (which was every Friday!). I always tried to do the dishes for her as a Thank You - for cooking, for being a great teacher, for recycling ;-))

But I digress - I'd love to be in on this one, but Sept 1 is as soon as I can do it!

I am still pretty new to postal LBing (just started earlier this year) and have recieved a few singles. The stamps have been GREAT and some of the logbooks have been pretty simple homemade or even store-bought. Some of the store-bought one have been dressed up VERY nicely. I have recieved a couple of homemade ones that are truely impressive and show great imagination and have let the creators know my appreciation. I am in my first ring that should be coming home to me sometime soon and my logbook is store-bought and simply decorated and I can't with for it to come back to me so I can read everyone's thoughts. I really hope that people took the time to write more than "Hey nice stamp, or like your logbook." I really want to hear people's thoughts on the SUBJECT of the ring. Ya know what I mean? I have since joined two more rings and have put more time and thought into my logbook by adding nice little extras that pertain to the subject matter. I am learning from others as I recieve more of the singles floating around out there. Thanks for sharing your PLBs with me everyone. It makes checking the mail exciting now.

If it's beautiful and costs $5 to send, I'll smile as I pay the postmaster.

On the other hand, I'm not looking to ship a brick. Warn me ahead of time that it's heavier if you can. Don't set me up to pay $10 at the window. Don't send blank journal book to which you've made no embellishments.

Packed full of fun facts and/or gorgeous artwork? It's worth a little extra :)
