while we're on the subject of travellers...

I met someone and had solved al but one of their travellers. the next day we were at a mini gathering, and one of the other people had solved that traveller. They said the answer in front of me, which they couldn't help, since I was sitting at teh same table with them.

Now I know the answer to the traveller, but I didn't solve it, and, looking back, I don't think I would have solved it on my own.

It's an ethical question. should I meet them again, would it be fair (and honest) to present them with the answer, based on what I overheard, or should I never collect it, even though I now know the answer, because I know I wouldn't have solved it on my own? They would know I had simply overheard the answer and din't actually solve it...

If while planting a box i find a box already planted in the same spot...do i count that as a find? YES. i didn't "solve" the clue, but i did find the box.

So my answer to your question is yes i would ask for their PT. But you have to decide for yourself.

I would just be honest and say you know the answer because you overheard it, and the answer is.......... Are they willing to let you have it?

I don't see the problem, you have found out the answer and there are lots of ways of doing that. Some wouldn't like it, especially if it a case of solving a puzzle instead of just knowing an answer, but it doesn't hurt to ask and it is not like you are pretending you have worked it out.

I agree - I'd tell them you over heard it, but that you did spend time researching it, etc. etc. One time someone researched a PT I had just retired and replaced with the new one - she printed her clues off rather early ;-)) I gave her the new one (I didn't even have the old one with me) because she did the work! But I'm not terribly legalistic about these things ;-))

Another time, I solved half a PT, but not the *precise* answer - the PT owner allowed her daughter to tell me the exact answer - LOL!!

I do love researching PT's though - but I tend to be shy sometimes about asking...... what a goof I am!

The point is to find the answer.

Is there really a difference between internet search and social research? Granted, I would prefer to figure it out myself but it really comes down to using all the resources that are available to you the best you can. I personally would not 'punish' myself for someone else letting it slip, though that IS why I usually have my written and let the person read my answer rather than saying anything outloud...

I thought I would chime in with a couple of things...

First, from the point of view of someone with a PT... I would (and have) gladly given the stamp image to anyone who has the answer regardless of how they found the answer, but I think it is more fun if they have to figure it out for themselves (kind of like slack boxing eh? =o)

From the point of view of a PT searcher... this is why I always write my answers on a 3x5 card with the PT name on one side and the answer on the other... then I will never be the one to give the answer to anyone else =o)

I think it is more fun to find the answers on my own, but I have also been the recipiants of a PT based on an answer I overheard... I was not going to give up the opportunity just because someone else blurted it out =o)

all is fair in fun and letterboxing!
Cheers!

There must be a solution, read the newest note I added to it.

We write the answers to travelers so that we can show them to the planter rather than risking being overheard by saying them out loud. That doesn't answer your question, but it's a way of avoiding these situations.

Whoops - looks like I'm the proverbial day late and dollar short.

I think I'll go to work now and get off the boards.

Sorry for the redundancy.

*if you meet someone with a PT can you ask them the clue and answer it to get the stamp?*

I sure hope that's OK, because I did it all day long at the event I attended last weekend. I simply asked the person what I needed to do to get the stamp.
