My loyal hiking companion and nephew, Diesel, died today. Evidentally my brother and sister-in-law took him to the Memorial Day parade in our hometown and when the jets flew overhead, he freaked out and wiggled out of his collar. He then bolted down the street and down the off ramp for Route 2 and got hit by a car. We are all just crushed.....

Please pray for our family. Though he was only with us for less than a year, he was a very devoted yellow labrador.

I'm so very sad and sorry for your loss. It is so much worse when a life is cut short. When my loyal companion(13 years) died, I felt I had to have some sort of a memorial. Her bowl, with her tag, and a 12x12 memorial page was posted at the beginning of our forest walk. A candle was lit by her picture for weeks at my home. A donation was made to the animal rescue that saved her.

It helps. Time heals. Another 4 legged companion is out there somewhere looking for someone. My two other dogs would have been put down in a week if I hadn't rescued them. So the life cycle continues.

Dogs are very, very sensitive to noise. What sounds like a plane to us, sounds like a bomb blast nearby to them. Their heightened sense of hearing and smell is the reason humans domesticated them in the first place. He did what was natural for him to do. Please pass this information on to everyone that may adopt a dog into their family one day. You will have done a great service for a departed hiking companion and may save this pain from so many others.

I remember how excited you were when Diesel first came into your family, and I'm sure you made his life happier than it would have been without you. I understand your pain, and wish that there was something that could make it go away, but only time will help. Hold onto your memories, and know that our thoughts and prayers are with you.

I'm so sorry! My dog is a very big part of my life and I know what it's like to loss a good friend like that. They never judge you, no matter what. They always love you too. My thoughts will be with you all.

I so sorry for your loss. I often wonder how I would feel if I lost one of my three dogs. I don't think I could go on, it's like losing a best friend and a sibling at the same time. One who always loves you back no matter what. I'm sure during the year you had him you were a great comfort and joy to him as much as he was to you. I will be praying for you and your family during this time.

Thanks to all of those who have sent their well wishes. It is so hard when a family member dies, even with a furry one. We are doing ok, though my brother and sister-in-law are taking it the worst. Octane (the cat) is the one taking it the best, since she now rules the roost again.
