Hey... this is wild! We had a unique experience today.
We'd planned a huge boxing trip to Portland and points south.
I'd dutifully saved scores of clues on my PDA. And we planned to
go to Hinckley Park in South Portland first. We got to the park and broke out
our PDA and to make a long, excruciating story short we had technical
difficulties and couldn't access any of the days planned clues!!!
So, we decided to go off on the trail and start looking anyway!
We looked in every spot that looked like it would be a good letterbox
spot....
Anyway, it was a 5 box series and after 2hrs. of hunting we had found
boxes: 1 - 4 IN ORDER!!! :-)
We probably didn't invent it.... But I think intuitive letterboxing is quite an amazing
experience... :-)

That seems darn good to me! I sometimes can't find the boxes with a hand full of clues and a compass!

We know what that's like too! :-)
Happy Daze did a nice job of following letterbox conventions when planting these boxes. :-)
Or we may be bordering on a psychic experience... Ha, ha, ha!

I tried this last weekend at mackinac Island in Michigan. I knew there was a box at Fort Mackinac. Only I had forgotten the clues to this particular box. My daughter and I scoured every nook and crannie and tree trunk and hole. no box then we get home and read the clues...it says to sit on a particular bench then scan the area for a path. well we didn't remember that part. so I guess we will have to go back again sometimr in our life to try again.
Glad to hear that you were successful!!! =)

Hey... sounds like our plans. I wanted to plant about 5 -- 10-- 20 more on planting day but my allergies knocked me down a peg or too...

I know what you mean... And why is it I always drive by the next turn to get to the sought after letterbox?.... It never fails! :-)

On the other hand, SWMBO and I have agreed on a policy of "Drive more, walk less" -- especially when hunting geocaches, which generally don't tell you anything about how to get there.
There was one infamous time when we drove around until we were only 0.3 mile from a geocache, and there was this vacant lot with a trail heading off in the right direction. This must be it, so we parked and struck out. It was straight uphill, the trail quickly deteriorated, and before we got there we had stomped our way through all sorts of weeds and thorns and even disturbed some wildlife. As we approached the cache, we stepped out onto the paved road that we were supposed to use to get there!
The very next geocache, only a mile or two away from that one, we drove until we were within 100 feet -- but it was straight up a cliff face! That can't be right, so we drove around more and discovered that we could park at a little trailhead that was 300 feet from the cache -- a longer walk -- but was at the correct height, the walk was all on level ground.
After those two is when we decided to drive more and walk less. Basically, we don't park and get out of the car until we're sure we're at the best place to start walking. If it takes driving all the way around the area twice, so be it.
