I love Fried Ice Cream. It is so yummy. Who was the genius that thought of putting ice cream in a deep fryer? They deserve an award or something!

Frankly, I would eat shoelaces if someone deep fried them.

Sigh.

O.K., so is fried ice cream where they fry the ICE CREAM itself, or the toppings? 'Cause I've had the Smartest Guy in the World tell me it's both, and I'm confused... Little help for the little dummy in San Ho.

Yes - the ice cream itself.

from wikipedia:

Fried ice cream is an Americanized Mexican/Asian dessert.

Fried ice cream is commonly found at Mexican food chain restaurants in the United States (e.g. El Torito or Chi-Chi's) and fairs and carnivals. It is made by taking a scoop of deep-frozen ice cream (frozen well below the standard temperature at which ice cream is generally kept), possibly rolling it in egg, then rolling in cornflakes or cookie crumbs, and then briefly deep frying -- the extremely low temperature of the ice cream prevents it from melting while being fried. Finally it might be sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar.

Fried ice cream has also become a common dessert served in Chinese and Japanese restaurants. The recipe at such restaurants is slightly different, in that tempura batter is usually used instead of cornflakes or cookie crumbs.

OK, we had fried okra that was from a bag from a grocery store in San Jose (perhaps not the expert in southern cookin'). Never had boiled okra. I don't know if we can even get fresh okra to boil over here (what does it look like? and does it have a Spanish name?).

Let's see ... what does it look like? Well, it looks like a collection of little slimy pentagonal pods. (is that descriptive enough?) I believe the Spanish word for it is "okrasita slimera" .... or is it "snotera?" I can't remember. ;-)

Oh gosh, Fried Okra is the best! And pickled okra. Boiled okra is slimy and not too appetizing. I think they were pulling your leg. And bagged (probably frozen) fried okra from a grocery store in California is definitely not the place to try it!!

I have a soup recipe with okra in it. Ryan isn't too excited about most southern foods, but he doesn't even notice the okra in the soup. And he loves the soup. I have gotten pickled okra from grocery stores in the West and it isn't too bad (not as good as my Granny made) and I think it comes from Texas.

OK ... now I agree with Amanda on the fried okra. I never bad-mouthed that! I was detesting the boiled okra.

I have never had pickeled okra, but I'm thinking you would need to develop a taste for it. :-)

As a general rule, I don't like squash, but I like fried squash. And I do like zucchini when it is raw, chopped up in salads or fried or in zucchini bread. But you boil any of that stuff and yuck.

Well it's an old Idahoan standard -- for when the potato crop fails. Slice it up, put into a casserole dish, slather on some butter, and you've got dinner. Yum!

Check the *Food for Thought* board I think someone posted a recipe there. If the Elephant ears are the same thing that we call Funnel cakes...it's basicly pancake batter poured through a funnel into hot grease and then covered with powdered sugar.

This sounds like the sort of thing you can get in Scottish fish & chip shops. Some of them will deep fry anything you bring. A favourite is deep fried Mars Bars. A Mars Bar being a thick bar of soft nougat and caramel covered in chocolate. Try one on a cold wet night while out camping mmmmmmmmmm…

Another delicacy is deep fried pizza. Not so good in my opinion batter and the pizza base toooo filling :-(

Sure, I make it all the time! I use about four cups flour, three cups milk, about 2 1/2 tablespoons baking powder, and a couple of teaspoons of salt. Knead it really well, add more flour if need be (it should be thick). Heat some oil in a deep skillet. It should be hot, but not smoking. Take a small ball of dough and flatten and stretch it thin with your hands, poking a hole in the middle. Fry it in the oil on both sides until golden brown.

It goes great with stew or chili, or topped with butter and sugar and cinnamon. Or butter and powdered sugar. Sometimes at powwows we top it with taco stuff.

Don't know anything about Elephant Ears. Sounds interesting though!

Now I'm hungry for fry bread. I think I need to make some before breakfast. :)

I was just talking about this with my DH over the weekend. I have always wanted to visit Scotland, but the only "for sure" that I know I can't miss while there is a fried Mars Bar! Of course, it's true ... Scots and southerners have one thing in common ... they both LOVE fried food, and they are both good at making it! (And I have the waistline to prove it!)

Eagerly awaiting Old Home Days and fried dough,

I don't know how you know what poo tastes like, but fried okra does not even closely resemble how poo smells, so you are out of your mind. :) I like fried okra a lot and so do many other people. My wife is not one of them, but her dad is!

I do find mushrooms pretty gross on most days. Even fried ones... It takes all different kinds of tastes. Had fried frog legs the other day and liked them. My son and wife did not like them so much.

Cheers!

I'm not a big fan of okra, but of the ways I've tried it, fried was the best. It's too slimy most of the time.

I had these when I was a student in Mexico. SO good!!!!!
But, I also love fried okra and boiled peanuts, and other things most people wouldn't touch with a ten-foot fork.
(But I won't eat the normal stuff like catsup (sp???) heck, I don't even know how to spell it!)
