Lockport PageTurners RULE!

Just thought I'd brag on the absolutely NOTHING I did today. I co-coach a reading team in my district that reads from two book lists (19 during the fall competition and plus another 18 more for the spring). Then we (meaning the kids without any help from us) compete against 3 other school districts to see who can answer the most questions correctly. Not only did we come in 1st place for today, we came in 2nd place overall (only 3 points behind the team that made it to the finals)! This is only our second year doing this, so if the trend continues, we'll be in 1st place and go to the finals against all of Genesee Valley next year!

For the record, while my kids read like crazy all year and memorized book plots, characters, beginnings, endings and general themes from the entire list of 37, my supervisory skills in this were UNMATCHED. I TOTALLY sat on my butt ALL year and told kids to read books, watched them take computer quizzes on the books every other Tuesday, then quizzed them on the books on the last two days before the competition. Oh, and I got us the bus to go to Friendly's to eat afterward!

I believe I have a severely strained luxury nerve. (wiping forehead) I'm bushed...gonna need a breather after all this sitting on the sidelines and taking praise and glory!

The (bursting with vicarious pride) Sprite & the (got a day off to watch AND go to Friendly's with us, so YEAH!) Highlander

Conga-rats!

Your kids are great!

Three cheers for the Lockport PageTurners!!!

I love to see kids get excited about reading.
It's the one thing that, if you know how to do it, you can learn anything else you want.

Honestly, all Lisa (the other coach) and I do is remain enthusiastic about reading. She's an elementary school librarian in our district, so she already loves books and I just love kids' book, period. We're glad to give these kids who just love to READ a competitive outlet. When you think about it, every other aspect of school life has that. There's already science fairs, math competitions, geography bees, sporting events, concerts, plays and displays...heck, there's even competitive CUP STACKING (which actually looks pretty cool http://www.speedstacks.com/!) But in our area, the only way you get to show off how much you retain when you read is on tests at school. I can't tell you how much both Lisa and I want to get up on stage WITH the kids sometimes...it's so much fun!
