I went to the post office today to mail a couple of books for Amanda and walked up to the counter saying, "Happy tax day!"

The lady behind the counter seemed amused by my enthusiasm, then told me stories about all the people who come talking about how sad, frantic, etc. they are. =) The guy next to me on the counter was sending a package to the IRS--I know that because he was talking to the other lady at the counter about if it was a good idea to have delivery confirmation or something like that. Certified something? I don't know--I never use those extras so they all sound the same to me. But he turned to me with a grave face, saying it was no laughing matter.

My, my, my.....

Then she told me that none of the post offices around here are staying open past 8:00 this evening. In past years, a few of them will stay open until midnight for those REALLY last minute filers, but not this year.

Then the guy next to me freaked out. "WHAT?! I AM SO SCREWED!!!"

Which kind of surprised me, since I thought he was there at that moment sending his tax returns. Did he have another one to send or something?

It wasn't until after I left I thought--ah ha! Another good reason to use those self-serve machines to send a package. That would still postmark the returns up until midnight, right?

The life and times of the post office line. Good times. *nodding*

Never mind the grumbling. Think of all the smiles you would be bringing to fellow letterboxers. Of course, I'm glad I wasn't waiting in line behind you for stamps because the STUPID stamp machine isn't working again. **no worries** lol

Went to the post office on Saturday and the line was out the door. I wasn't even thinking about tax mailing deadlines and asked if that was the normal Saturday crowd (we recently moved so it was my first Sat. trip to the PO). The clerk said people are so confused about the deadline - she didn't even know that the deadline was the 17th.

Unfortunately, our post office here doesn't have those self-service kiosks and there are none in our community either. In previous places, the bank inside Walmart and a gasoline station had mini post offices in them AND the post office had those kiosks.
