Some tips from the LnL site (a.k.a. things you need to know when planting a LnL in the wild):

» Do not intentionally drop storage containers. (This might break the seal and rain might seep into the box. That's why.)

» Because Lock & Lock is airtight do not store any living creature in a Lock & Lock container. (No hamsters for first finders!)

» DO NOT place any Lock & Lock container directly in contact with an open flame as the material is flammable and will burn. (Use in conjunction with one of Ryan's new AQ attributes.)

» Lock & Lock containers may crack if dropped from a height or when frozen. (Be careful when hiding LnL's on cliffs or icebergs.)

» It is best to open and close the containers on a flat surface, such as a table. (or your friend's back)

» It is best to consume stored food as soon as possible. (. . . so you can put the LnL in kitty litter for a couple of weeks and use it on the trail.)

» Lock&Lock is manufactured from a synthetic resin and thus should not be used for cooking. (It should not be used for cooking. It should be used for letterboxing.) When used in a microwave, Lock & Lock should be NOT be used to cook food. (Why else would it be put in a microwave oven?) Care must be taken using in a microwave because longer settings than necessary to heat food may deform the plastic. (Then you can't use it even if you do cover it with kitty litter for two weeks.)

» Normally food stains can be removed if washed in a dishwasher on the "hot" setting. However strong food colouring or fermented foods may cause staining. (Not a problem -- if the stains are various shades of green and brown.)

» Do not pull or stretch the silicon seal when washing as it may break. (Then you can only use it for indoor urban boxes.)

» Because of air pressurisation, it is best not to carry stored food in an aeroplane. (Does stored food make it through security checks? Do camouflaged letterboxes make it through security checks?)

» Do not store carbonated drinks, e.g. Coke, 7-Up or Pepsi etc in Lock & Lock containers. (These mixers are not considered appropriate first finder treats.)

Note to self:

As a new boxer I must discover this practice of kitty litter usage and its relationship to letterboxing as a whole.

Perhaps an ancient custom?

Perhaps only most experienced letterboxers can maneuver this?

Perhaps a secret or esoteric process?

....must break the code....must....find...the key....the...purpose...kitty litter...

End of Note to Self.

PSSSST....

Don't tell anyone I told you this.....

The secret of kitty litter is if you use a food container such as a peanut butter jar, bury it kitty litter for a couple of weeks then wash it well to remove food smells that might attract critters who would chew into the container.

......you didn't hear it from me.......

On the geocaching forums, some guy once proposed a new sport he called "hamstercaching". The motto: "Your cache isn't really a 5-star difficulty unless the trade items can bite!"

Would a letterbox on an iceberg also require the use of the "limited time" attribute?

Just wanting to be thorough...

He even has a picture of a hamster in a transparent box. Funny!

Thanks!

That information would have been helpful a couple of weeks ago when the racoon opened my Mardi Gras (previously coffee container) box. It was kind enough to leave the contents alone. I figured I must not have gotten all of the coffee smell out even though I washed it.

That is if I knew what y'all were talking about. Which I don't 'cause it's not like maybe anyone might have told me or not.

Quote Would a camoflauged container make it throught airport security

When I went to the Philippines, I carried a few containers with me to be the first planter there. The containers I prefer to use are the OD Green Decon Wipe containers. As I was unpacking, I'm sitting there looking at the thing and realized what a STUPID idea it was to pack that thing on the plane. Funny thing is, no one said a word.

I don't know why THIS part elicited the yelp of laughter that woke the Highlander up, but that's the keeper tonight! LOL
