Quote Sellotape = transparent sticky backed tape on a small roll - Trade name which has become a generic term (well generic in England lol)

I'm with TG - we just call it mailing tape or packaging tape. Thought there are variations: you can find tan packagint tape, as well as the stuff with strings running through it lengthwise it that is very strong.

Quote Fablon = large rolls of stick backed plastic sheets used in DIY. Often patterned and used on shelves and to cover kitchen stools. Transparent rolls often used to cover books with. Again Fablon is trade name which has become a generic term (but not generic enough to make it into Wikipedia, I just tried looking!!!!).

To me this is "contact paper." I used two whole rolls of the clear stuff when I painted one of our bathrooms for the boys (http://www.conceptgroup.com/rita/ - I wasn't going to try free-handing those circles!) - it makes a great masking material for that purpose!

Sellotape is actually more like Scotch (which again is a trade name that has become a generic term) tape than packing or mailing tape.

Either way "sellotape" is fun to say. :)

so we have three products we're discussing...

sellotape, or scotch tape, clear, ranging from 1/2 to 3/4 inch (1 1/2 to 2 cm), and is somewhat sticky.

fablon, or contact paper, which can come in both clear and patterned, and in sheets or on a roll, is somewhat sticky, but if you're lucky, can be repositioned if you set it down wrong providing you haven'et stuck it down hard yet.

and packaging tape (don't know the english word for this) is thin like scotch or sellotape, and more sticky than they are. It is also wide, like duct tape, and is transparent and usually shiny. once it touches the package it is ON and nothing short of an atomic bomb is going to remove it...

did I miss anything?

Mmm, don't know if we have this. We do have packaging tape which is the width of duct tape but ours is usually brown coloured. Maybe it is the same thing just coloured differently.

Same thing, just a different colour. (See, I typed that with a British accent.) ;-)

Sometimes the brown one is available here too, though I haven't seen it in a long time.

Yes, we have the brown stuff too... In my opinion it is the same just with the color... I don't use the colored stuff much.

And Americans miss the joke in Harry Potter, when Ron mends his broken wand with "Spellotape".

Oh, something to add to the Postal tutorial... something about postal HH and the etiquette with those since they are a bit different from regular HH... right? =o)

AG, that is a totally awesome bathroom! If that wouldn't wake a person up with a smile in the morning, not much could! LOL

You did that with contact paper? You said you used the clear stuff...did you just paint it? That is incredible!

I cut out the circles (think negative spaces) so I could paint inside them. I had a template of the smaller bubbles that I just moved and repeated (you can see the pattern if you look closely). I did the same thing with the body shapes on the animals, and then free-handed the black lines over the top. You have to make sure the edges of the contact paper are very firmly in place b/c the paint can seep underneath. A couple of my circles are a little fuzzy 'round the edges, but overall I was pretty happy with how it turned out.

Quote The Sorcerer's Stone.

And yet, a philosopher's stone is what the alchemical item that turns lead into gold is called, even in the USA. The US publisher thought that Americans wouldn't know what a philosopher's stone was, and would be "turned off" by the word philosopher. Philistines!

Also, they went through and changed "jumper" to "sweater", and "bin" to "garbage can", that sort of thing. I don't like it, because the story tales place in England, with English characters, and an English character in England <italics>would</italics> call it a jumper. It's jarring and out of place.

They could have put a glossary in the back if they were that worried that us benighted yanks couldn't work out what a jumper is.
