I think that one of the best letterboxing practices that adults can train children to cultivate is exactly what you recommended: "not let(ing) the kids run ahead and get to the box first."

It is such a simple idea, but even in our group (that often includes children other than my own), this requires diligence and lots of reminders.

That said, what a multitude of problems can be avoided if the habit is established!

Thanks again for the reminder.

My kids are the "clue readers". Most of the boxes we've found so far are in places that I don't want my kids sticking their hands in, or walking through.....I have a HUGE snake phobia!

I let them tell me where to go, and then I locate the box. If it's in an okay spot, I let them come and get it after my inspection.

We also don't wipe the debris away with our hands. We use our walking stick to move stuff around! Again, I hate snakes!!!! LOL!!!!

I know that I'm a little paranoid about things, but it makes me feel alot better!

That's not paranoid - it's just plain smart!

We also use hiking sticks, but we carry a thick pair of gloves in our backpack, too. That should protect our hands from spider bites.

Many of my boxes here in the Pacific Northwest are overgrown with blackberry brambles or stinging nettles which make getting the box pretty hazardous. Problem is the brambles are not there in the winter....only in the summer! Often obscuring landmarks in the clues!! Again when this happens it is not fun to be the one grabbing the box. I try to note in the clues when the blackberries or other hazards are likely.
