Listen,

All this BS really comes down to this.

1. When I box with my son, I wouldn't find one of LW's, Jenni's, or anyone else's adult box.
2. When I box with adults, if I had clues I would look for those FIRST, because the ones I have seen are beautiful, very artistic and NOT pornographic. (most classical painters showed much more)
3. The people that complain about these boxes need to lighten up. There's tens of thousand of boxes out there, surely there is room for something more than kitty kats and leaves.
4. For the people that have adult boxes, keep on plantin them, make them WOM, mark them adults only, whatever. I'm a good enough parent to keep my son away from them. Painting didn't stop at impressionism, stamps shouldn't stop and wildlife.

Just my humble opinion.

Quote First I get flamed by some for having adult boxes out there in the first place, but when I do all I can do keep them away from children, I get burned again and told I had it coming to me.

This all seems to come down to a question of who's responsibility is it. Is it mine for planting something racy that is labeled as such and has warnings on? Or is it yours for ignoring those warnings and looking anyway? *isn't this why take-out coffee now has warnings that contents may be HOT?!*

Quote Maybe the solution is to just ignore the people who write to bitch at me because they weren't properly warned,( even though they got the clue second or third hand) and just write FINDERS..BEWARE! on all of these.

If the ADULTS-ONLY label has come off by the time it gets handed on again, then so will a FINDERS...BEWARE!

I support ignoring the flames from these folks. Don't let the few ruin the fun for the rest of us.

Hmmm...

Been following this discussion for a while now...

Solutions? Turn the boxes into PTs...then YOU control who gets it.

I realize that rules for WOM dictate that the receiver doesnt pass on the clue to others (still rubbing my butt after blabbing the location of a Northern California mystery box all over the internet in 2003!!)

Once the clues are passed on with the condition of ADULTS ONLY, the onus is on the parents. If they choose to let their kids see, so be it. However, if the finder breaches your conditions (no kids stamps etc) then you should be able to have the entry on AQ removed. (Thoughts, Ryan??)

My two cents

just my own two cents...

my kids have seen LW's adult only stamp images in our logbook, they are beautiful and like someone said worse is seen in art/tv/movies/whatever. HOWEVER, my children have not logged in the logs that accompany these images. ADULT ONLY means (gasp) that the boxes are for adults. I did not stamp into the KIDS ONLY boxes at SUN. They were for kids.

As a parent make your decision, but as a LetterBoxer respect what the PLANTER intended or we may not get to see ANY images from them at all. AND THAT WOULD BE A LOSS TO EVERYONE!

Again just my own two, but do show some respect it is so lacking in everyday life. Thanks.

Oh yeah, I have one more comment on this. After seeing most of the adult themed images, for most I would NOT have a problem with him seeing, though I would not log them. As a parent, I'm much more concerned about teaching him to be tolerant and well rounded rather than making sure he doesn't see a girl in a short skirt.

I don't know whether this will be of any help; it's just a little thought I had upon reading this. Do you have something like "Adult Finders Only" marked on the actual box container? It might not be a complete fix, but some parents might be *shamed* into following your instructions if the child can also see clearly what your expectations are.

Again, I may have no idea what I'm talking about. But there it is for what it's worth.

I understand your concern about kids logging the boxes online. If you can't get the parents to cooperate, maybe your alternative is to ask Ryan to remove the find listing for you, as someone else suggested. Or, isn't there a way to hide all of the finds on a box?

I hope you get it sorted out.

When the Dreaded Pirate Queen said something about hiding finds, I had an idea...

I know that nystery boxes list undisclosed finder. So, what if you made the adult boxes mystery boxes? You could list location info within the clue, but for th purposes of AQ listing it would be a mystery.

I think this is such a hard issue because I can see both sides and I cannot see too much middle ground.

If a kid hikes to the top of a mountain and your adult box is there, I don't really see a problem with them putting their signature stamp into the logbook so that they can record the sccomplishment of being there. I don't think they should have the adult stamp in their logbook or even see it for that matter.

Then, I understand what everyone with adult boxes is saying about not wanting kids to have a part of the box because they are only for adults. In the end, though, it's up to each parent as a parent to make that decision.

Also, there was some confusion with "adult themed". I would take this as a warning of what is there, not a restriction.

Anyhow, I've only found one adult box. I don't think they are a bad idea at all- kind of a fun twist on boxing.

Just my two cents about the zillion posts I've read today :)

Quote I took their broken boxes and soaked logbooks home with me, spent hours to dry them, and wrote them back asking for their address so I could mail them back all cleaned up. I call it "rescuing" but whatever. *shrug*

Someone took my geocache and contacted me (via geocaching.com) asking for my address to return it. I was really leary about it - might have been a way to find out where I lived. I thanked him for contacting me but asked him to throw the geocache away and I would replace it with another one (which I did). I don't know if that's what the owner of this box was feeling - sounds like they had ownership/control issues rather than personal safety concerns.

I am a younger person who happens to enjoy things like violence and sex on tv. I am an american and feel that I have every right to think that way . I believe that the first amendment says it is ok for me to be differnet then the "norm". If you don't like the sex and violence then you can watch anonther channel! There are plenty of them out there. but, alas sadly it doesn't work that way. People feel when they see sex and violence and that it is wrong then NOONE should be able to see sex and violence. I think that is complete bull $%!t !!!! They don't wnat there poor kids to be scarred for life! Oh I feel so bad for the kids! UM hello no i don't. If the parents don't want there kids watching certain tv shows then they should be a PARENT and not let them watch Them. But chad you say, what about when the parents are not home???? Who is going to stop them then????? The PARENTS!!!! YES! They can set the V-chip in their tv to restrict viewing with out the pass code of any rating they deem to bad for their children!!! Every TV made after January 1, 2000 ( and many earlier than that) has been required by LAW to have a V chip. I bet not too many tvs are older than that now adays as things just do not last like they used to. I am sick of parents expecting the government and whoever else to babysit their kids. They need to start being a parent and do there job! When the Parents telivision Council begs the government to fine channels because they showed something that the kids might be exposed to. Something that I want to see is the government to tell these whining useless self-important parents to program their v chip and to go $ themselves.

I for one am sick and tired of living in a child proof world! Parents start doing your job and stop taking away the things I enjoy!!!!

Parents stop raining on my parade of filth and mind your own }@~% BUISNESS!!!!

Well put Mr. Yuk. I guess in my house we find more offense with cruel or vulgar cartoons than we do with the human body. Everybody has got one....

I do, also, have to say that I was unaware of Kid's only boxes (we don't have any around here) but it is nice to know the rules that apply to both kinds of boxes. I would shy away from boxing an "adult only" box with my children just based on principle - but I certainly would look for them with my hubby. I don't think people should censure their images because some people do not want to read or follow the protocol for such boxes.

chadams, Heeheeheeheehee!

LW, if I were to find one of your "adult" boxes one day and saw that a child had logged in, to me it would not say anything (negative or positive) about you. Rather, it says many things about those parents who allowed their children to circumvent your clearly stated guidelines.

So, in the words of Ricky Nelson, "You can't please everyone, so you gotta please yourself."

I don't want to lose the "Adults Only" boxes!! For one thing, it completely violates my First Amendment sensibilities and for another thing, I think they are a lot of fun ;-))

I always box with my kids, and have taken them with me to find one of Jenni P McD's Adult boxes. I peeked at the stamp by myself, and stamped it in my logbook (not theirs!!), and stamped our family stamp in the box. I thought the stamp was very tasteful and artistic, so later I showed my kids. My 4 yo was completely uninterested, and my 7 yo (son ;-)) got a big giggle, and told his dad later that we found a "naked" stamp - lol! Dad the Muggle said that was his favorite stamp so far - lol! Might could even get him to go boxing with us if I promised a few more adult boxes like that!!

THe only thing I probably would not stamp in my book (a lot of non-boxers see my book), or let the kids see is something blatently sexual - but if it was a well done stamp, I'd stamp an index card and hide it somewhere - lol!!

So, I'll keep hunting the "AO" boxes, if you will keep planting!!

PS - loved the mudflap girl icon idea - lol!!!

I also always box with my 10 year old. I am never without her. In the course of a 14 mile hike if one of the boxes happens to be an "adult only " box I have no problem putting her stamp in the logbook and choosing not to let her view the image. I can't imagine anyone that would have a probelm seeing her stamp in a logbook. People that know me know that I would never let my child view something improper so I'm not concerned about it being a reflection on my parenting.

Most of the adult theme boxes I have seen are nothing more than you would see in an art museum. They aren't like some horrible image that implies anything other than art.

But, so I want to bypass a box because I have my child with me?? No. Do I have to let her see? No. Can I put her stamp in the log? Why not, she made the hike. Does it make me a bad parent?? No, What would make me a bad parent would be never taking my child out letterboxing but letting her become a couch potato or junk food junkie.

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned or not...

If your "adult image" is a WOM box...can't it be listed as a mystery box? Mystery boxes only show "undisclosed" as finders...so as to keep the "mystery". If you create a Mystery box with a very high f-count, and you're only giving out clues WOM...who will see it? Other than a very select few? Will it still show up in some kid's logbook as a "find" if your f-count is lower than the "adult" letterbox?

Just curious!

First let me say that I haven't read every reply, there were over 60 at the time and I didn't have time to read them all.

Now,LW I see it like movies. If there is a R-rated movie then everyone knows the ages it's ment for but there is nothing to keep a parent from renting the movie and lettig their kids of any age watch it. Same with the *adult stamps*.

Have you been getting complaints from people about kids getting your *Adult stamps*? If you have then these people should know that you're not standing guard over the box so you can't control what other people do.

Quote I guess I don't see the issue here. You are being a responsible planter, and letting adults know that is stamp may not be appropriate for children. Why does it bother you if a child logs it?

Yeah, I admit that confuses me too. IMHO, it's up to the parents what their kids are allowed to see. Hence it is very important that adult-themed letterboxes have warnings so that parents can prevent their kids from seeing them if they so choose. But if they choose to let their kids see it, what's the problem? Is the issue here that the PLACER doesn't want kids to see the image even if the kids' parents are OK with it?

Quote ...heck it is WOM.

Seems like there are two issues being discussed here: children logging into adult-themed boxes, and the proper etiquette for sharing WOM clues. The second issue probably deserves its own thread, since it is a topic worthy of discussion independent of the subject of adult themes.

I suppose the placer could clarify in the clues that they are not to be shared. But is it OK for a finder to then tell another boxer where to go ask to see the clues? Or does WOM mean you don't speak of the box AT ALL, each and every one of us must find out about it on our own?

Quote How about the fact you've made a REASONABLE demand regarding the finding and logging of your box?

I'd have to see the actual text of the demand to pass judgement on that. If I were a parent, I'd take pretty much anything to the effect of "this box contains material suitable for adults only" as a warning to me that I may not want to let my kids see this box. I wouldn't expect it to be telling me that I'm not allowed to let my kids see this box regardless of my own personal feelings on the matter. It would have to be stated very clearly indeed before it'd sink in that my own judgement is not involved here, my kids are not allowed to see this box, period.
