Quote It's not exactly buttspank.com

Quote *laughing* I'm not going to check if that's a real site or not, but I once made up a url to inject levity into a Great Adventure of mine, but when people received it as e-mail, it automatically turned it into a clickable link which, as it turned out, did go to a very real website. I didn't find out until later when someone replied that they followed the link and was HORRIFIED by the stuff they found.

ROFL!

Okay, I give in. I'm checking, because that's the kind of sick, twisted person I am.

...

It's real. Just a page full of links, but.... Disturbing looking links.

Yikes.

Seriously... Yikes.

I knew some one would go look. I was afraid of my computer being attacked by viruses or porn or something so thanks for taking on the risk for us all!

Quote The original post in this thread was simply entitled "mean" and it contained a message by a person whose profile stated he or she was only 10 years old.

I missed that part.

So how did a 10 year old manage to post a message on a site that is resrticted to 13 and over?

That's an excellent question. And where did the age come from? I don't remember him/her mentioning their age in the original post, even though it was pretty obvious that it was a child doing the posting.

The kid had a little too much personal information in their profile as well--another good reason that kids should not be allowed to roam around AQ unrestricted. I removed the identifying name, city, age, etc. Also deleted the original post to help hide who it was about as well. Those details really weren't pertinent for everyone to know.

My daughter has been online almost longer than I have. But when we got our first computer almost 10 years ago... it was, as it is now... in the center of our living space. Not tucked away in her bedroom (of course it would be buried under piles of clothes so she'd never seen any bad sites). We've upgraded... I added a laptop that gets mobile reception, even in her room. But she still sits next to me when surfing... her dad and I walk by regularly... not monitoring what she's doing every minute, but she knows we're always present. And she's out in the open. Even when she moves the laptop somewhere else in the house... she's almost always sitting next either her dad or myself. If kids want to hide something, they will find a way... we're fortunate, she doesn't. Not that she hasn't surfed into territory she didn't mean to go to... we all have, but she's usually doing it next to me. And we end up shocked together... moving away from the site she didn't mean to find.

Quote And by the way, I never believed in sparing the rod......properly applied a few times, and the recipient becomes a believer.

Not to be argumentative, but I firmly believe in "sparing the rod." I do not handle problems with friends, co-workers, my boss, or my spouse by hitting them. In fact, I could very well be arrested for it. So, why would I teach my children that the best way to handle problems is to spank the offender? Why is it ok to hit a child, but it is punishable by law to treat an adult in the same fashion? I am not saying that my children are angels, but they respond very well to non-violent, non-physical discipline and positive reinforcement. And if you think about it, to paraphrase, "properly applying the rod a few times" is how many women find themselves in abusive relationships ... they "become believers" too. Not passing judgement here, just sharing personal opinions.

I do not advocate striking adults either, but neither would I allow my child run into the street in front of a moving car. I would jerk that kid out of harm's way. (pretty physical) Bless Dr. Spock....there are lots of us out here who not only paddled our children (to be differentiated from whipping or beating), but were also paddled...........and we didn't turn into abusers or any other type of deviant.

You can't reason with young children.....they physiologically do not have the capability.....and many of us have found that a little swat on the behind reinforces when parents say no or other directives that are not obeyed. I am the parent, I am in charge and it is my duty to teach my child proper behavior...among many other things. As far as abuse is concerned, the law does in fact differentiate between discipline and abuse.

Of course, to each his own- they're your kids, you bring them up however you wish. I would never try to tell anyone otherwise.
But I always found that when I was a kid, blocking me from something was unnecessary and stupid- I was swift enough to figure out what was good for me and what was bad. What I should see and what I shouldn't. Not to mention, blocking something from many kids is just making them more interesting, as I said before- the kids might not actually WANT to see or do whatever it is you're blocking them from, but the fact that it's off-limits makes it appealing.

Keep in mind, CQ, that you're the exception to the rule. You just naturally behave (which might be part of being the first born child of three). Think of how likely your brother and sister are to follow the same rules! ;-)

Every kid is different, so no one way works, no matter WHAT you do. As a teacher, I have to relearn that rule every year. The idea is to keep monitoring their progress and yours to make sure you're both heading in the right direction.

Since the ole Topic of spanking came up I figured I would share Some links To articles Written By Renowned Child Psychologist John Rosemond. He is about as much of a Child Behavior Specialist as it gets. He has some very interesting thoughts about spanking.

The first one is his actual explanation of his views on it:

http://rosemond.com/index.php?action=website-view&WebSiteID=389&WebPageID=11710

and this one is his reaction to California assemblywoman Sally Lieber Who wants to make it illegal to spank YOUR child. ( I am not a fan of other people telling me how I can raise MY OWN kids(Even though I don't have any of my own yet))

http://www.kansas.com/mld/eagle/living/people/family/16583095.htm

Both are very good reads!

Blimey!! I’m amazed at all the responses my post has generated.

Thanks for all the suggestions. This whole thing came to light when my son was too sick to go to school but not really bad enough for one of us to stay home all day with him.

It is not really the site content that bothers me as I already have the necessary parental filters and firewall set up and he spends most of his time playing Runescape. What does get me is the cost of him spending hours on a dial-up connection during the day when the cost is highest. I am starting to think that the best thing will be to charge him for his time on-line and if his pocket money goes into negative figures - TOUGH!

Hopefully the cost issue will soon be a thing of the past as, at last, we are due to get broadband early next week.
