Quote So...I'm looking for some SERIOUS camo ideas - that don't involve using wittle pile of existing rocks to hide the box (which I'm afraid no matter how small would make this hiding spot stand out)

Ideally, I'd like to find a cylintrical hole about 1 3/4" in diameter and 3" long (the dimensions of the container) in amongst the existing rocks to slide the box into and only the rock glued to the box (the 1 3/4" end) is showing. Or something like that. I've already used brown tape to camo the majority of the box, btw. Oh, and any nearby trees are deciduous and nekkid in winter, so hanging anything won't work and the surrounding area is manicured/regularly mowed park grass.

Have you tried looking at google yet? I did a google search, images, for "Hide a key, rock" and came up with all kinds of rocks made to hide things under them. As a geocacher/terracacher I have been fooled several times with caches hidden within a rock. From my observation, most use some sort of epoxy. Jet weld, is a two part type of epoxy that when cured is like iron. I work in a small engine repair shop, and we use it sometimes to repair cracked engine blocks, works really good, and wont come off once it is cured.

I know of several cachers who have taken an old piece of wood, more like a small log, Hollowed it out and place a container in the log. Then form a lid out of the peices of the log. Laid in the open by some of peices of logs, it was nearly invisible, even though it was in plain sight.

Once I had to find a written clue as to the finale whereabouts of the cache I was seeking. The clue was inside a "Hide key rock" right next to a pay phone. I looked around it, stepped on it, dug around it, but didn't look under it, for several hours....... I'm sure everyone in the park was looking at me supiciously while I was digging around that pay phone. The park ranger knew about the cache, and was standing in his window watching. I knew he must have been laughing his heart out, I could feel it.

I would imagine, that if you wanted to create your own hollowed out rock, you could rent a small roto hammer drill, and drill out a rock. It would take some time, but the result, providing you dont crack it in half, would be priceless. If you had a rock large enough that you could carve or drill out a opening so you could glue a Lock n Lock box inside it would be perfect! hmmmm (sticking this away for a future project).

Well I hope that helps.

If you want to do more than just *glue a rock to the top* like make a hollow rock. Here's an idea. You can get liquid latex at Hobby Lobby/Micheals. Get yourself a rock the size you need and brush layers of the latex on it until you have a good thickness. This will make a mold of the rock. Then you can pour plaster or masonry cement in the mold and embed your container in it and let it cure.

I've made plaster impressions of leave and brushed the latex on them, you get good detail.

BoxdN has made at least one fake tree stump with some sort of cement molded around a screw-on jar and them painted it to look life-like (except for the LbNA logo included!) It's still my favorite hidey hole ever. He's not on the boards very often, but you might try dropping him an email and asking for his guidance. I would think you could also make a fake rock this way.

Cachers have some good ideas for camo. They recommend and are highly successful with Gorilla Glue. Check out this thread (they have pics in the messages - Via a link to a pic already posted on the Internet. Ryan - maybe an idea for us?) to see some of the great ideas. Go to the last page of the thread and scroll down.

Someone covered some lock n locks that you can't tell are plastic at all. Others hollow out logs. Interesting and devious idea there for your PREplanning.

Ok so the REALLY funny part shiloh - Did you note that the comments says:

Man those muggles have NO fear!

I just wanted to be clear that I HAVE a container for the particular box I originally asked about and am merely looking for glue to plastic/camo ideas for it....not looking to hack open logs, snakes, purchase key hiders, etc.

Still....hoping this thread will help others reading, as there are some terrific ideas - perhaps for other upcoming boxes...

Just wanted to report back that

shiloh rocks (take that AQ search function!), as he knows already, 'cause I told him so in this particular case, and we all knew it anyway :-)

It IS all about the epoxy and rocks. Among other thingy-do-dads.

This box was placed in September and has been found by exactly one person.....
